Two paramedics have helped tr eat m ore than 1,000 survivors of the Hait i eart hquake this week.
Mark Bryers and Kalpesh Diyar, trauma care specialists with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service,
are part of a nine -strong team of Br i t ish physicians, paramedics and surgeons who left the UK on
Saturday.
The Humanit y First UK medical team (HFUK) f lew to Miami, w here t hey met up wit h US and
Canadian medics before t ravel l ing to the Dominican Republ ic.
They arr ived in Port- au-Pr ince, Hait i , on Sunday after an arduous j ourney which w as "beset wit h
vehicle breakdowns and ot her di f f icult ies," a f i re service spokesman said yesterday.
Mark, 46, and Kalpesh, 42, along with the rest of the team, are moving between Port-au-Pr ince
and Carrefour adm inister ing post -operat ive care, especial ly for amput ees.
They are t reat ing in fected open f ractures and g iv ing help to people w ho suf fer w i th chronic
condit ions, such as asthm a and di abetes.
On Monday, the team dealt wit h 200 cases, largely involving infect ed fract ures and wounds.
Numbers have bu i l t up over t he past few days and t he team has now t reated more than 1,000
patient s in Carrefour.
The Mercury has not been able to contact the t eam in Hait i , but a f i re service spokesman said:
"Though work ing f la t out deal ing w i t h t he ef fects o f t he ear thquake, t hey are safe and wel l and ingood spir i ts."
Mr Diyar, a trauma care instructor with the f i re service, also helped after the 2003 Turkish and the
2001 Indian earthquakes.
He sa id before he le f t . "On t he t e lev ision, you get a two-d imensional p ic t ure of what the camera
sees.

Humanity First medical direct or Shahnawaz Rashid is co-ordinat i ng the HFUK team f rom t he
charity's base in London.
He said: "There is st i l l a great need f or medical assistance in Hait i .
"However , the requi rement is sh i f t ing in t he next w eek f rom surg ica l to publ ic heal th and the
management of pre -exist ing chronic condit ions.
"We expect t o be work ing to he lp prevent or conta in d iar rhoea, cholera, t yphoid and t e tanus. "
