cysto The abbreviation “cysto” stands for the endoscopic

procedure cystoscopy.

This is a visual examination of the urinary bladder using an instrument called a cystoscope.

This test is used to:

Diagnose and evaluate conitions of the urinary tract

To recognize cancers of the bladder or urethra

To determine the cause of pain in the urinary tract

HCO3-

This is called a bicarbonate. A bicarbonate acts as a buffer to maintain or normalize acidity(pH) levels in blood and other necessary fluids in body.

Consists of one central Carbon atom surrounded by three Oxygen atoms.

There is one Hydrogen atom attached to one of the Oxygen atoms.

CRF The abbreviation “CRF” stands for chronic renal

failure.

CRF is the inability of the kidneys to filter waste products from the blood resulting in uremia. This can either be acute or chronic.

The kidneys begin to compensate by hyperfiltration. This is the excessive straining of the blood resulting in kidney failure.

Chronic loss function causes scarring and shrinking of the kidneys

cath The abbreviation “cath” stands for catheterization .

This is a therapeutic procedure consisting of inserting a tube through the urethra.

This tube travels through the urinary bladder.

The purpose of this procedure is to either insert dye or withdraw urine.

This procedure is to treat urinary retention, and bladder outlet obstruction.

AGN This medical abbreviation stands for Acute

glomerulonephritis.

AGN is the inflammation of the kidneys. In this case, the glomerulus.

When the glomerular membrane is inflamed and proliferated it becomes more permeable.

This can result in proteinuria and hematuria.

AGN can often be accompanied by hypertension, edema, and impaired renal function.
