MBBS and BDSTo earn a degree in medical and to become a doctor, one has to undertake MBBS or BDS course. Let’s familiarize ourselves with these two terms first!

♦ Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)- It is an educational degree that is awarded to students of medi-cal science. In India, all the medical colleges affiliated with medical council of India offer MBBS degree. . The course continues for about four-and-a-half years, followed by internship of one year. The internship stretches the duration of the course upto five-and-a-half years.

♦ Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) – In today’s time Indian dentists earn the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree (B.D.S.), which is overseen by the Dental Council of India. The study of this programme requires four years of study followed by one year of internship.

Am I eligible to become a doctor?The eligibility criteria for both these programmes are the same. Interested aspirants can apply for MBBS degree after completing their 12th standard from a recognised board or equivalent. Prospective students must have completed a Higher Secondary School (10+2) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The minimum requirements for the MBBS course are 50% marks in physics, chemistry, biology and English in class 12th Board examinations. However, for reserved category students the minimum requirement is 40%. Moreover, the age of the candidate should be at least 17 years on or before 31st December of that year. The candidates must note that eligibility criteria are different for different institutes.

Entrance ExaminationsSupreme Court of India has ordered to scrap all state CET exams for the MBBS entrance. The states are supposed to hold only Single Exam Called NEET from now on. Apart from NEET, only AIIMS (conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences) and JIPMER (conducted by Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research) are the only UG medical entrance examinations conducted in India.

1. AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science) Entrance Exam - AIIMS Exam is a national level undergradu-ate medical entrance exam for getting admission in MBBS programme. It is conducted by All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi. Currently we have a total of 7 AIIMS institutions located across India offering 672 seats.

Eligibility:

Interested candidates must have completed their 10+2 or its equivalent exam with subjects English and PCB from a recognized university and secured a minimum of 60% aggregate. The minimum requirement is 50% for 50% for SC/ST category students.

Candidates must be a citizen of India.

The candidate should have completed 17 years of age on or before 31st December of the corre-sponding year.

Exam pattern:

There are 200 questions, MCQ’s type from the subjects Physics, Math and Chemistry and duration is 3.5 hours.

1 mark is awarded for every right answer and 1/3 marks is deducted for every wrong answer.

2. NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test) - NEET will be conducted in an offline mode (pen and paper based) at various centres across the country. The question paper will be available in different languages namely Eng-lish, Hindi, Tamil, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi and Telugu.

Eligibility:

The candidate must have completed age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of ad-mission. The upper age limit shall be 25 years (with a relaxation of 5 years to SC/ST/OBC candidates).

The candidate must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Bio-technology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% (40% in case of SC/ST/OBC can-didates) marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Bio-technology at 10+2 level examination.

Examination pattern

The question paper will comprise of 180 questions. Questions will be of MCQ type with each question having four options to choose from.

The duration of exam will be three hours. 4 marks are awarded for every right answer and 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer.

3. JIPMER - Candidates seeking admission in JIPMER must appear for JIPMER MBBS examination held by the uni-versity every year. Apart from AIIMS and NEET, JIPMER is the only UG medical entrance examination conducted in India. One has to qualify this exam in order to acquire a seat in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research.

Eligibility:

Candidates who wish to apply for the said exam must be an Indian National.

The candidates must have completed 17 years of age as or on December 31, 2017.

Candidates must have passed/appeared in 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry Biology/Bio-technology and English as compulsory subjects in class 11th and 12th.

The candidates must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the entrance examination. However, for SC/ST/OBC candidates the minimum is 40%.

Examination Pattern:

The question paper will consist of 200 MCQ type questions where only English will be the medium of language.

The duration of the exam will be 2 hours and 30 minutes and will be conducted in two shifts- forenoon and afternoon sessions.

Candidates will be awarded one mark for each correct answer while there won’t be any deduc-tion for incorrect answers and unmarked responses.
