On Your Course
A week in your frst year
The week begins with a lecture related
to the weeks Presentation or clinical
scenario. The Presentation introduces
the issue that will be the ocus o the
weeks work. Then you and your PBL
group decide how to tackle the problem
and set your objectives or the week.
You will attend lectures and seminars
related to the scenario and the
underpinning sciences biomedical,
psychological and social, that allow you
to understand the issues presented.
You will, through our Research Methods
sessions, develop your knowledge
o key principles in medical research.
You will also explore an area o your
own choice in our Student Selected
Study programme including the
opportunity to undertake dissection
in anatomy. Later in the programme
you will be positively encouraged to
broaden your academic horizons in our
Studies outside Medicine modules.
You will have time or independent study.
You will take part in Inter-proessional
Learning (IPL) where youll meet up with
other students rom various health related
disciplines to exchange knowledge.
One day a week you will see knowledge
in practice within a GP surgery. And
at the end o the week, all the PBL
groups join up or a eedback session
to consolidate the weeks learning.
and all this while youre enjoying
a ull and varied university lie.
Research and audit
Research orms an extremely important
part o the course. The Faculty o
Medicine and Health Sciences has
consciously ingrained the principle o
being research active in its culture. It is
a culture that will help to encourage you
to develop not only your own interest in
research, but to develop an enquiring,
challenging and open-minded approach
to evidence-based health provision.
This will underpin your proessionalcapability throughout your career.
Your main ocus on research will be in
years three and our o the course, where
you will be involved in an audit project
into whether practice meets a standard
and writing-up a report on your ndings.
Intercalated degree
The MB/BS course does oer you
the opportunity to take a year out o
the course, typically ater the ourth
year, to complete a Masters degree
in a related subject, beore returning
to complete your medical studies.
The University oers Masters in
Clinical Education and also Masters in
Research, both o which are an excellent
complement to the MB/BS course.
Facilities
We have rst class acilities on the campus
which are purpose built or learning. The
teaching and learning acilities are in a
modern and well-equipped School o
Medicine with excellent seminar acilities
and dedicated PBL rooms. The Norolk
and Norwich University Hospital, which
is next to the campus and opened in
2001, is a state-o-the-art building oering
a superb teaching environment with a
dedicated clinical skills teaching area.
I chose to study atthe University o East
Anglia, primarilybecause o ProblemBased Learning. As amature student I eltthat this was more inkeeping with my own
style o learning.
My expectations othe course were prettyhigh and now that I amat the University it has,in act, well surpassedthese expectations.Early patient contact
in primary andsecondary careplacement have, orme, been the real starso the course so ar.

Teaching and assessment
Our balanced emphasis on Problem
Based Learning encourages your
learning through whole class discussion,
lectures and seminars. PBL triggers a
process o private study, research and
group problem learning which will be
undamental to your studies on the course.
Many o your teachers are research
active, with a culture o working with
evidence that shapes the direction o
clinical practice, and so encouraging youto adopt a similarly dynamic approach.
You will also gain clinical experience in
general practice and in hospitals under
the supervision o expert clinicians,
learning on the ront line o patient care.
Measured progress
Your progress will be regularly assessed
and this is a positive process to help
you throughout the course. Your work
in each module is assessed through
whats known as an Objective Structured
Clinical Examination (OSCE) a short test
o your knowledge and clinical ability.
Other assessments include: short
answer and multiple choice exams
in years one to our (one each year);
assignments on research methods and
your student project; and assessments
o presentations on your Student
Selected Study to your ellow students.
Throughout your time with us, you will
keep a portolio and write one essay
each year to refect on your proessional
development, and the values and attitudes
you are developing as a member o the
medical proession.
Ater graduating
You will be entitled to provisional
registration with the General Medical
Council (GMC) with a licence to practise,
subject to demonstrating to the GMC
that your tness to practise is not
impaired. This becomes a ull license
ater a year o satisactory service in
approved positions as a Foundation
programme doctor. We are condent
that youll be superbly prepared or your
Foundation programme o general clinicaltraining. The condence you will have
developed through early patient contact
and our emphasis on inter-disciplinary
training throughout your time on our
course, complements the Foundation
programme, where youll gain more
experience across a variety o specialities
beore choosing your own specialism.
On graduation, at least 98 per cent
o our students are employed in the
health proession.
One o the highlightso studying at NorwichMedical School iscontact with patientsrom the very outseto the course. Its aantastic experience inthe ront-line o health
provision, meetingpatients with a hugevariety o conditionsand needs. It hasbrought my studiesinto really sharp ocus.
Working with GPs andin hospitals has really
helped me understandthe demands andchallenges I will aceevery day as a doctor. Its hugely motivatingto see theory andscientifc knowledgeapplied in everydayinterventions. I
wouldnt want to learnin any other way.
