GriffithHealth’sOutstandingAlumnusoftheYearisapplyingherexpertisetoeasethepainofthousandsofpeoplearoundtheworld.Sincegraduatingfromdentistryin2010,AjithaSugnanamhasusedherpositionwithintheAustralianDefenseForcetoforgeanoutstandingvocationinservicetohercountry,aswellastothoselessfortunatethanmost.

‘Iworksevendaysaweek,generallyfrom8amto5pmbutsometimeswehavemasscasualtiesarrivingoutsidethosehours,inwhichcaseIhelpwithtriageandprovideauxiliarysupportforthemedicalteams.IgetfourweeksoffayearandI’vebeenabletospendtwoweeksofthatvolunteeringinareaswherehealthservicesarelimited,’sheexplains.

In2015AjithaspentherannualleaveestablishingatemporarycommunityhealthcampinNizamabad,Indiawhere15cliniciansand60volunteersprovidedfreemedicalanddentalservicestomorethan2,500people.In2016sheprovidedasimilarserviceinBantumilli,Indiatooffermedicalanddentalcaretomorethan3,000patients.

What you’ll study This degree is the first step towards a career in dentistry. You’ll learn from extensive hands-on training from the first year of your studies.

You’ll study and work alongside registered dentists and dental specialists in real life settings, in our modern dental clinic and specialised laboratories in the Griffith Health Centre. HonoursHonours is available for this degree (additional 80 credit points —1 year full-time, or 2 years part-time).

Professional recognitionCompleting this degree and our Master of Dentistry provides the education and skills you need to apply for registration as a dentist in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Mindy Nelson believes that the industry placement componentof her Griffith degree helped her to get where she is today. She is now the Program Team Leader at The Creche and Kindergarten’s “Family Place”, which offers soft-entry, universally-accessible early intervention and prevention practice for children and their families in the Logan area. Mindy spent her final Child and Family Studies placement with the Communities for Children program, which led to being recruited upon graduation one year later to develop and run the “Family Place” program. ‘I really enjoy working with people and seeing positive outcomes for families’ she said.

Aaron Bailey is putting his Bachelor of Human Services degree to use in Canada, working at Queen’s University in Ontario. He engages with students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and who are on the autism spectrum. It’s rewarding work and Aaron comes to it with a wisdom born of his own experience with learning disabilities, including ADHD and a severe problem with basic numeration. ‘I didn’t know how I was going to get through high school, let alone go on to university,’ says Aaron. ‘However, once I was diagnosed, I learned more about my condition, learned what was possible and immediately set my sights on greater things. ‘Griffith was so important in supporting me. It’s helped me make my way personally and professionally.’

Based in Berlin, Cerissa French works for Affymetrix, a leader in genomics analysis. She is a sales specialist in genotyping solutions for human and agricultural biology research and routine screening. ‘Working with distributors in the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia, I assist them by providing sales and marketing support including visiting customers and giving seminars, as well as training their teams on the technology and sales arguments.’ The Bachelor of Biomedical Science, says Cerissa, set her up with her first job as a research assistant, with the qualification certainly facilitating a fantastic career so far.

Greatly improving immunisation rates in her local community has been the highlight of a nursing career for Gillian Hermosilla-Silva. A finalist in the 2016 HESTA Australian Nursing Awards, the Bachelor of Nursing graduate says she was “delighted and overwhelmed” to have her efforts recognised in coordinating an immunisation outreach service for Logan City Council. In 2013, Gillian began organising a schedule of home-based appointments for people for whom visiting the clinics presented a problem. ‘We found that factors such as transport difficulties and childcare issues were proving problematic in parents getting their children to immunisation appointments,’ she says. Currently 93% of children aged 12–15 months in Logan are fully vaccinated, which is slightly above the QLD average of 92.7%.

Looking after the nutrition and dietary needs of patients with a variety of conditions is all in a day’s work for dietitian Heidi Neil. Heidi was selected for the New Graduate Dietitian position at Mater Hospital in Brisbane after graduating with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours). ‘I provide nutrition support, education and counselling for a variety of conditions. I love being in the dynamic hospital environment and working with patients to find strategies to assist them meet their nutrition requirements, and each patient is uniquely different. The second half of my final year involved 20 weeks of professional placement, where I then put all the theoretical knowledge I learned over the four years at Griffith into practice. I saw a wide variety of cases in different healthcare settings, which made the transition into my new graduate position a little less daunting.’
