IhavebeenfortunatetoserveontheMHCAboardnow for threeyears.Oneoftheseyearswasaschairman,

and it just so happened to be for our60thanniversary.Ithasbeenaconstantremindertomeofwherewehavebeen,wherewearenow,andwithoutquestionwherearewegoing,andhowareweget-tingthere.

Representing the association gives apersonuniqueperspectivetoassessouropportunitiesandtoalsorecognizeourthreats. Inour60thyear, theopportu-nitiesandthreatsstandasthesame:westand,balancing,onthebrinkofdisas-ter or the forefront of an excitingnewerainconstruction.

This past year our association wasvisitedbytheAlbertaConstructionAs-sociationpresidentandexecutivedirec-

tor.Theirwarningtouswasclear:con-sider the future. In thenextfiveyears,wewill truly recognize the severity ofourskilledlabourshortage.Asanasso-ciation,ourroleofreinforcingtheposi-tivecultureofconstructioncareershasneverbeenmorereal.I’veheardpeoplesaytotheirchildren,“Gogetaneduca-tion”.Weshouldbepromotingthemes-sage,“Gogetatrade”.Weliveinoneofthegreatestcities,inoneofthegreatestprovinces, in the greatest country intheworld;growthisoneofourgreatestassets, andMHCA is in the “growing”business. Even in a slowing economy,businessisgood.

We have commissioned a coupleof projects that promote this culture.Whetheritssupportingtradesexposureto skills competitions, or highlighting

ourstrongexistingmembersandtheirhardwork,weareresponsibletorepre-sentallthatisgoodinourindustry.ItisagreatresponsibilityandMHCAhasanamazing group of passionatemen andwomenwhohavetakenthechallengetodojustthat.

Today I challenge you with twotasks: Next time you see a director oroneofourstaff,thankthemfortakingtheir role sopersonally and sacrificingtheir personal time to help grow andstrengthenour association.Tasknum-ber two, challenge yourself to becomean ambassador for our industry. Weneed strong voices to encourage ouryoung people to embrace this future.With strong voices, I believe we willhaveastrongandvibrantfuture.

To celebrate our 60th anniversary,we enlisted the expertiseofagraphicdesignertocreateacelebratorylogo(basedonouroriginallogo)andhelpusre-brandtheassociation.Inadditiontoanewlogo,newbusinesscards, letterhead,bumperstickers,windowdecals,andothermarketingmaterials,includingapop-upbannerforeventsandfoldersforprospectivemembers,havebeencreated.ThesematerialshelptoreflectthefreshimagetheMHCAisportrayingtoourcommunity,andwillbeusedtohelptheassociationgrowandsucceedinthefuture.

takenmanyconstructionprojectsthatareatornearingcomple-tion.InthispublicationyouwillreadabouttheCanaltaCentre(ournewregionaleventcentre),theexpansionandimprovementsattheFamilyLeisureCentreandMethanexBowl,andourfloodmitigationefforts,whichincludetheconstructionofbermsintheHarlowandLionsParkareasofthecommunity.

In2014,MedicineHatCityCouncilreleaseditsstrategicpri-oritiesforthenextfiveyearsandelectedofficials,senioradmin-istration,andstaffhaveusedtheseprioritiestomakedecisionsand recommendations as the need arises. These six prioritiesinclude: economic development; infrastructure and amenities;socialwellness;imageandprofile;fiscalmanagement;andCitygovernment.

The City’s construction projects reflect our commitment tothesepriorities.Weknow thatour effort toprovide recreationandleisureopportunitiestoresidentsandvisitorsnotonlyim-provesqualityoflife,butsupportsthelocaleconomyandcreatesjobs.Ourcommitmenttoprotectingourcommunityfromfloodhasledtoincreasedconfidencebydevelopersandhomeownerswantingtoliveandbuildinthoseneighbourhoods.

Wewant to ensure sustainable growth in our city.Through

collaborativeengagementanddiscussionwithstakeholders,in-cludingtheMedicineHatConstructionAssociation,wecanpro-moteenergyefficiency inhomesand“smart” landuseandde-velopment.Wecanofferaffordablehousingandfamily-friendlyneighbourhoods.WecancontinuetomakeMedicineHatacom-munityofchoice.

Whilemanyofourmajorprojectswillbecomingtoanendin thenextyearor two,muchactivitycontinues.Work to im-prove theunderground infrastructureandtheaestheticappealofthe400and500blocksofSecondStreetdowntownwasun-dertakenthissummer.Planningforthedevelopmentofanewse-niorscentreisunderway,includingcommunityconsultationand

feedback.Wehavealong-termassetmanagementplaninplace,whichdescribeshowwewillmanageourwater,sewer,stormandtransportationinfrastructure.This30-yearstrategicapproachtomanaginginfrastructurepositionsuswellaheadofotherAlbertamunicipalitiesandensuresservicelevelsaremaintainedforlocalresidentsandbusinesses.

Medicine Hat Construction Association and its membersplayakey role inmanyof theseprojects and in thevitalityofourcommunity.Thesebusinessescreatejobs,purchasesupplies,andcontractotherlocalservices,addingvaluabledollarsintooureconomy.Theyalsoplayaphilanthropicroleinourcommunity,sponsoring local teams and events, providing in-kind servicesandvolunteerhours.OnbehalfofCityCouncil,thankyouforallthatyoudoinourcommunity.

A comprehensive operations retreat confirmedACA’s pri-oritiesremainfocusedongovernmentadvocacy,developmentandpromotionofindustrystandardpractices,andpromotionofaskilledworkforce,ACA’sprioritiesfor2015are:

1. Maintaining adequate and predictable levels of public investment in the face of declining oil prices.TheACAcontinuestoadvocatetheProvincialGovernment

to develop a long term capital project and deferredmainte-nance spending program/budget. As Alberta’s largest pur-chaser of construction services, the Province influences themarketpriceforconstructionservicesbyaddingorpostpon-ing(cancelling)projectsinamarketthatiscurrentlyoperatingnearcapacity.Converselythedevelopmentofprojectsduringsloweconomictimesresultingfromachangeinoilpricesorother economic influences allows the construction industrytomaintain their skilledworkforce.Aconsistentnumberofskilledworkersdeliveringconstructionservicesiscritical.

2. Working with Alberta Infrastructure and other owners to ensure they remain preferred clients. Specific initiatives include modernizing procurement practices, adoption of industry standard documents, and minimizing delays in payment.Fair procurement practices that recognize the public de-

mandfor“bestvalue”shouldbesupportedbyAlbertaInfra-

structure. In addition to fair procurement, the governmentshould adopt the use of CCDC standard documents whichclearly outline important commercial terms such as promptpayment terms and acceptable amounts of liability. Alber-taInfrastructurewillbeconsideredapreferredclientiftheyadoptapositionoffamiliarityandfairnesswithcurrentcon-structionindustrypractises.

3. Advocating for balanced and reasonable safety and WCB policies and enforcement, with specific focus on silica exposure and on interpretations of refusal of modified work.ACA is advocating withOHS to revisit theOccupational

ExposureLimittosilicadust.ACAispartneringwithanum-berofassociationstourgethatthenofaultprincipleemployedbytheWCBnotapplytopost-incidentterminationsforcause.

4. Strengthening relationships with Alberta’s education system to develop our future workforce.Clearly,theFederalandProvincialgovernment,thepublic,

and the construction industrywould prefer to hireCanadi-anworkerswiththenecessaryskillstoperformthetasksre-quiredtodeliveraproject.Tosupportthelongtermgrowthofaskilledconstructionworkforce,wemustpartnerwithAlber-ta’seducationalsystemtopromoteaninterestintheconstruc-tionindustry.Ourindustrymustbeseenasapositivecareerchoicetoinfluenceyouthtoconsideracareerinconstruction.

5. Continued rollout, adoption, and maintenance of the trade definitions.Theuseoftradedefinitionsprovideclaritytoallconstruc-

tion project stakeholders, which in turn reduces confusion,errors, disputes, and litigation.Theyhelp to ensure thebidsarecomplete,consistent,andcompliant.n

We have an active policy portfolio and are consistent-lyworkingoneachof these items,andareproudtosaythatwehave achieved many successeswith our advocacywork.WithinEconomicDevelopment,theCitycreatedaneconomicdevelopment strategy and recently released anRFP for eco-nomicdevelopmentonJune1,2015.Wehavewitnessedmuchsuccess in physician recruitment through our PhysicianAt-tractionandRetentionnetwork,withourtargetnumbersforfamilyphysicianrecruitmentnearlyachieved.Withinairser-vice development,we have continued toworkwith themu-nicipalairportandwerepleased tobeapartof theAirSer-vice Development group and also witness the expansion oftheairportinrecentmonths.WehavebeenactivelyworkingwithAirCanada,asoursoleflightprovider,andweredelight-edwith the addition of a fifth daily flight time to our localflightservice.AdditionallyAirCanadadevelopedaflightpassproductandinstructionalvideospecificallytailoredtoourre-giononourbehalf.WecontinuetoworkcollaborativelywithCityPlanning,BuildingandDevelopmentonactionstowardsourRedTapeReduction initiative.OureducationcontinuesonNon-ResidentialPropertyAssessmentsaswework to in-formmembersoftheimportanceofreturningtherequestforinformation forms, aswell as assistingwith information ontheassessmentandappealprocess.Wewerepleasedtohearthat theAnti-Noisebylaw is slated toberevisedduringmid2015 in accordancewithourpolicy.Therewas also a recentannouncement for funding towards theWildHorse Borderbusinesscasetoassisttheadvocacyeffortsmovingforward.

merce to work towards achieving these targets, in additionto the partnershipwithTheCanadianChamber andAlber-ta Chambers in the foreign worker program portfolio. OurChamber also issued a recent letter to the newMinister ofMunicipalAffairs,HonourableDeronBilous,regardingcon-tinuation of theMunicipal Government Act review, as thatimpactsseveralofourmunicipalpolicyprioritiesandwelookforwardtoaresponsethatwecansharewithourmembership.

We are an active advocate with formal and impromptumeetings with senior business and government representa-tives,makingsure to takeeveryopportunity toadvocateonbehalf of our region.We had the opportunity tomeetwithGreggSaretsky,presidentandCEOofWestJet,andFerioPug-liese,vicepresidentofWestJetEncore,onareturnflighthome

fromFortMcMurrayanddiscussed the air serviceneeds inMedicine Hat. We were also able to nab some one-on-onemeeting timewith theDirectorofOperations for theOfficeofJasonKenneytodiscusstheuniquelabourneedsofAlbertaandhowchangestotheTFWPcan’tbeone-size-fits-allsolu-tions.InJuneofthisyear,wewereinvitedto,andparticipatedin,aconsultationinEdmontonwiththeMinisterandDeputyMinister of Job, Skills, Training, and Labour to discuss theconcernsandoptionsregardingtheproposedminimumwageincrease.Wecontinuetoworkonthisandotherveryintegralissuesforourmembers,asweknowtheimpactsofdecisionsrelatedtotheseitemscandirectlyimpactandaffectthebot-tomlineformanybusinessesandorganizations.

TheCHBA/CityLiaisonCommitteemeetsbi-monthlytodis-cusstopicsofcommoninterest.Thesesessionshaveproventobebothproductiveandeffective.Townhallmeetingsareheld

withrepresentativesfromthePlanning,BuildingandDevelop-mentServicesdepartment.Topicssuchaslotdevelopment,per-mitprocess,off-sitelevies,andgradecompliancearediscussed.

TheMedicineHatConstructionAssociation(MHCA)hasbeen the long-standingvoiceof the area’s constructionindustrysince1955.Ithasplayed–andcontinuestoplay

–acriticalroleindisseminatinginformation,facilitatingcom-munication,net-working, advocating, and connecting the veryheartoftheindustrytothecorecompaniesandbusinessesitsoactivelyrepresents.

Aswitheverythinginlife,timedoesnotstandstill.AndtheMHCAitselfhasevolvedandcontinuedtogrowalongwithitsmembership.

Here then is a brief glance at glimpses of that past, as seenthroughtheeyesofafewofthepastpresidentsoftheMHCA:

OlandbecameamemberoftheMHCAin1960,followinginthefootstepsofhisfather,DougOland,whowasoneoftheasso-ciation’sfoundingmembers.

“TheassociationwascreatedthroughtheChamberofCom-merceasawaytogeneratebusinessandbecomeapartofthecom-munity,”saysOland.“WeinitiallyrentedspacefromtheCham-

berofCommerce,holdingregularmeetings,dinnerevents,andevenafewgolftournaments.Itwasverydifficultinthoseearlydaystogetthingsoffthegroundandsignupmembers.”

DuringthetimeOlandservedhisfirsttermaspresident,thebigissueofthedaywastheAlbertaBidDepository,laterknownastheAlbertaConstructionTenderingSystem(ACTS).

“ACTSwasatenderingsystemdesignedtomakethingsequita-blefortheowners,thegeneralcontractors,andsub-contractors,”saysOland.“Itsetthestandardintheindustryandhaditsownsetofrules.Infact,IwasthepersonwhocoinedthetermACTS.Unfortunately,theACTShasbeendisbandedsince2005.Alotofgeneralcontractorsandsub-contractorsarestillupsetoverthefactthatitdidn’tsurvive.It’sashamereally.Itsdemisehasleftalotofgeneralcontractorsandownersunprotected.”

One of the more significant roles that the MHCA fulfilledduringthisperiodwastoofferaplansroom,wherecompaniescould come to view architectural and engineering plans.Thiseliminatedtheneedforownersandarchitectstoprintouthun-dredsofsetsofdrawings.

“Theavailabilityofaplansroomwasoneofthethingsthatreallyspedupthetenderingsystems,”saysOland.“Useoftheassociationandmembershipincreaseddramaticallyasaresult.Andtherewasbettercommunicationbetweentheownersandgeneralcontractors.”

Oland’s reign as president also proved instrumental in theformationofspecialliaisoncommitteeswiththedifferentlevelsofgovernment.Thisworkwouldproveinvaluableandremainstothisday,insomeformorother,asitisbeingyearlyupdatedandnewcommitteesarebeingformed.

“We helped develop the different types of contracts thatwouldbeusedbetweengovernmentandgeneralcontractors,”hesays.“Thereareprobablyaround50differenttypesofcon-tractsavailabletoday,liketheStipulatedSumContracts,CostPlus and Fixed Fee Contracts, Negotiated Contracts, andSub-Contracts.Itprovedtobeaverygoodsystem.”

AnotherkeyrolethattheMHCAhelpedfillwasputtinginplace safety programs for theworkers, like theCORE SafetyProgramCertificateofRecognition.

“During the 1980s and 1990s, the Alberta governmentasked us to set up a safety program for the industry,”saysOland. “We spent a lot of time andmoney todesignprogram,which came to be called theCertificate ofRec-ognition. It became recognized as a highly effective andequitable program. It was even recognized by the federalgovernment,provincialgovernment,civicbodies,oilcom-panies,andowners,etc.”

Lookingbackon themorerecentpast,Olandspeaksofanindustrywheretheprojectshavebecomelargerandtheskilledmanpowermorescarce.

“The bigger the project, the moremoney youmake orlose,”he says, adding the sheer sizeof theprojects them-selves limits the type of company that can bid on them.“Man-powerisanotherhugeissue.Wehaveamajorshort-ageofskilledpeople.”

Despitethesecurrentissuesthatseemtoovershadowtheindustry,Oland is confident there remains a strong needand adrive for a collective industry– and an associationthatcanrepresentthatindustry.

“We all need towork together orwewon’t survive,” hesays.

Hilgendorf has been amember or servedon theMHCABoardofDirectorsforthelast35years.

“Themain reason I joinedwas togainaccess toprojectsand tonetwork,”he says, adding theassociationback thenwasalotsmaller,withatighter-knitgroupofpeople.“Therewere a lotmore private projects back then, a lotmore pri-vate-ventureprojectsbeingdone.Today,weseealotofgov-ernment-fundedprojects.Theyprobablyrepresentabout80percentofthecurrentindustry.”

One of the biggest challenges Hilgendorf sees with themove toward government and institutional projects is the“redtape”involvedindealingwithregulationsandworkingcommittees.

“Itseemsthateveryonehasadifferenttenderingprocess,”hesays.“Thismakesitmoredifficultforthesubtrades.”

Hilgendorf is proud for serving theMHCA for somanyyears,beingapartofanorganizationthatstretchesbackintimewhilealsoreachingforwardintothefuture.HisreignispartofthelegacythathasenabledtheMHCAtocontinue.

“IfeelgreatforhavingplayedwhateverroleIcouldtokeeptheassociationgoingandtohelpincreasethemembership,”

Asforthefutureoftheindustry–andtheMHCAforthatmatter–Hilgendorfremainspositive.

“Somebody is always going to build something,” he says.“Theeconomycangoupanddownand the associationcangainafewmembersandloseafewmembers.But,intheend,there isalwaysgoing tobeaneed for the industry tohaveaunifiedvoicewhen it comes to issues likeworker’s compen-sationandadvocacy.Theindustrywillalwaysneedacentralplacetogoto.”

LawrencehasbeenamemberoftheMHCAsince1984.Hismotivationforjoiningwasprimarilytogainaccesstotheplans

roomandnetworking.“Theindustrywashorriblebackthen,”hesays.“Therewasn’t

any work available. It was a dog-eat-dog world from 1984throughto1988.Therewasakindofrecessionatthetimeandalotofpeoplejustuppedandpackeditin.”

AccordingtoLawrence,therealmotivationforanyonejoin-ingtheassociationbackthenwastoaccesstheplans.

“Theassociationwasagreatplacetonetworkandtofindoutwherethepermitswerebeing issued,wherethenewdevelop-mentwastakingplace,andwhowasdoingthedeveloping,”hesays.“Manpowerwasn’tthebigissuethatitistodaybuttheas-sociationstillhadissues.TheyhadtoworkwiththeCity–andcontinuetodoso–toencourageprivatedevelopmentintown.We need to encourage development and a lot of times, thatmeansthattheCityhastogivedeveloperssometaxbreaksorinfrastructurebreaks.Ithinkthisremainsanissuetothisday.”

Duringhistenureaspresident,LawrencewasinvolvedinthepartnershipbetweentheMHCAandtheAlbertaConstructionSafetyAssociation todevelop an industry safetyprogram formembercompanies.

“Whatreallyhurtthisindustry,Ithink,isthelostofACTS,”addsLawrence.“Ithinkthingsareabitshadierasaresult.”

“IthinkthatthecityofMedicineHatisinagoodposition,”he concludes. “Wehave a lot of servicework at themoment.Andsomethingalwaysseemstocomeup.Asfortheassociationitself,Ithinkithasshownthatitcanwithstandthetestoftime.”

Meier has been amember of theMHCA since the 1960s(asidefromabriefhiatusinthe1980s).

“Back inmy early dayswith the association, the industrywasvibrantandalive,”hesays.“Therewasalotofworkgoingonandalotofprojects.

Despite the heady days,there were some issues thatneededtobeaddressedbytheassociation.

“Some of the challengesof the day revolved aroundworkingwiththedifferentde-partmentsoftheCityofMed-icineHat,”saysMeier.“Therewereafewconcernsoverper-mits and the City’s delay inissuing them. We ended up

forminganadhoccommitteetositdownwiththecityofficialsto address these issues. It involved taking a direct approachwiththepolicymakersandalthoughwestruggledabitintheearlystagesofthediscussions,weeventuallymadesomehead-way.Andwegottothepointwherebothsidesofthetablewerehappywiththeresults.”

Meiercitestheseinauguraldiscussionsasahighpointinhistermaspresidentwiththeassociation.

“Thetalksbetweenthecityofficialsandtheassociationarestill ongoing,” he says. “In fact, I think they occurmore fre-quentlytoday.It’sgreat tohavebeenapartofsomething likethatbackinitsinfancy,tobeabletohelpopenthedialogue.”

AlthoughMeierdescribestheassociationashavingtostrug-gleabitmoretodaytoretainandgrowitsmembership,heap-plaudsthecurrentleadership.

“Theyaretakingaproactiveapproachratherthanareactiveone,”hesays.“It’salwaysdifficulttosteerintothefuture.Theassociationneedstokeepitsearonthegroundanditspulseontheindustryinordertodeterminethebestpathforward.Iamveryconfidentthattheywillbeabletodothatverysuccessfully.”

As a second-generation MHCA member, Padfield knowsfullwell thevalueofferedbytheassociation.He,personally,hasbeenamembersince1998.

“I would say that the industry really hasn’t changed thatmuch since then,”he says. “Therehasdefinitelybeena shiftin theway theassociation isused–a shiftaway frompaperdocumentstomoreofanonlineelectronicworld.”

ItwasaroundthetimethatPadfieldservedaspresidentthathe orchestrated the association’s purchase of a large-formatcopiertoaccommodatedirectprintingofthelargerelectronicplanssothatmemberscouldwalkawaywiththeirownsets.

“This service is still beingoffered toourmembers today,”he says, adding it provides a stable financial stream for theassociation.“It’saveryimportantpieceofequipmentandonethatIthinkhelpsmaintainthelegitimacyoftheassociation.”

Padfieldwasalsoinstrumentalincarryingondiscussionsbe-tweentheassociationandthecityofficialsofMedicineHat.

“It’sbeenastruggleattheboardmeetingstodefinewhatthememberswant,”hesays.“We’vecontinuallyhadtorec-reateourselves.Atthelocallevel,weprovideaccesstoandavoicetotheprovincialassociations.Thisisakeypartoftheassociationaswellanditisacriticalcomponentofhowtheindustrycanlobbygovernmentonmajorissues.”

Havingheldreignrelativelyrecently,Padfieldisawareofhowtheassociationneedstocontinuallyjustifyitsexistence.

“There is a fundamental reason that the association ex-ists in the first place and thatwill never change,” he says.“Theconstructionindustryneedstobandtogethertobethevoiceoftheindustry.WeneedaforumwhereOH&Sandcityofficials fromMedicineHat can approach us for feedback.Establishingthevalidityoftheassociationonaday-by-daybasismaystillbeachallengebutIbelievethatthereremainsarealneedfortheassociationandagapthatonlyitcanfill.Andwehavesomeexcellentandenergeticleadershipattheassociationwhoaremorethancapableofmovingtheasso-ciationforward.”n

carpenterfromGermanybythenameofAlbertEberhardtsetupshopinhisMed-icineHathome.Heworkeddayandnightrefinishing hardwood for customers. Astrendsshifted,headdedcarpetoptionstohisrepertoire.ThatishowAlbert’sFloor&Carpet, theoldest storeof its kind insouthernAlberta,wasborn.

ferredtohisdaughters,CarolineandAn-gelaEberhardt,whoconduct themselvesintheirfather’sfootstepswithprideandprofessionalism.

“We are honoured to have that privi-lege,”saysCaroline.

“Flooring used to be a function-al business; now it is a design thing,”addsCaroline.

young people to the trades; Caroline hopes new program-mingatpost-secondaryfacilitieswillhelppromotethebusi-nessasaviablecareeroption.

Afterall,whenCarolineandAngelastartedworkingatthecompany - still in their teens - even they thought itwouldjustbetemporary.

“Butthatisnotwhathappened,”saysCaroline.“Lifetookadifferentturnandhasbeenveryrewarding.”

Over headDuane Plato, president of Plato’s Superior Roofing Ltd., has

roofinginhisblood.Fromtheageof13,heworkedinhisfather’sshoponeveningsandweekends.Hethentrainedasarooferandshifted to full-time status.Afterhis father’s retirement, almosttwodecadesago,hetookoverthecompanyoperations.

Whenthecompanyopenedin1950(itwasoriginallyhousedinaformercandyfactoryintheFlatsdistrict),mostofitsworkin-volvedslopedroofingusingasphaltandcedarshingles.Duane’sfatherwasthesoloemployee.AnoldcustomerrecallsseeingPla-toSr. ridinghisbicycle to jobs.Attached to thebikewasabigbasketfullofcedarshinglebundles.

In four years,Duanewill begin transitioning to retirement.

His two sons (one has a commerce degree) and a nephew arepoisedtotakeoverthebusiness.Infact,theyhavealreadymovedfromroofingtoestimating jobsanddealingwithcustomers inpreparationforthebigshift.

Atthatpoint,Duanewillgladlyspendmoretimefishing,surf-ing,waterskiingandwakeboardingwithfamilyandfriendsathisrecreationalpropertyinDickeyLake,Montana.n

A joint initiative from MHCA, theSoutheast Alberta Partners for youthCareer Development, and the ProvinceofAlberta’sJobs,Skills,TrainingandLa-bourandHumanServicesdepartments,theprogramaimstoeducateandengageyouth in the construction industry byrecruitinghighschoolstudentstoworkalongside tradespeople to build a minicitywithinMedicineHat’sSafetyCity.

Anon-profitorganization,SafetyCityteaches safety programs to children,from the rules of the road and farmsafetytoHalloweendangers.Currently,SafetyCityisjustanemptypieceoflandwithmakeshiftroads,but thenewpro-gramwillbring teensand tradespeopletogether to create miniature buildingswithin the current Safety City infra-structure.Theultimate result is amoreenjoyable and realistic environment forthekids,while introducinghighschoolstudentstotheconstructionindustry.

“The program’s intent is to exposeyoungpeopleatanevenearlieragetoavarietyoftradestogainabitofahands-onexperiencewitheachindustry,andtohavesomeofthedifferentindustryrepsandmentorsthatcanwalkthemthroughwhatlifeis likeinthattrade,whattheycanexpect,whattheyneedtofocuson,what’simportantastheygointoit,”saysRobinKurpjuweit,chairofMHCA.“Butmorethananythingwithkids–kidsar-en’tthinkingabouthourlywages,they’rethinking about, ‘do I like doing this,’‘do I feel goodwhen I’mdone,’ andwewant to give them that exposure andexperience.”

The driving force behind the SafetyCitybuildistheindustry’slabourshort-age,which is only gettingworse as theretirementsofbabyboomersescalate.

AccordingtoareportfromtheCana-dian Federation of Independent Busi-ness, Canada’s construction industryhasthecountry’shighestsectoralvacan-cyrateat3.7percent.AlbertaAppren-ticeship and Industry Training Board’schair, Raymond Massey says Alberta’sconstructionsectorwillbeshort40,000workersby2019.

“We’ve started to see this decline inapprenticeship, and we recognize thatweneedtostarttoapproachtheyoung-ergenerationand start selling themonthe industry as a viable career alterna-tive,”saysKurpjuweit.“There’snoques-tion – whether this ends up as a largescale,multi-year effort or a one or twoyearproject–thattheneedisthere.Weabsolutely need to have young peopleengaged, give them the opportunity tobecome involved.We just can’t sitbackandsayhowweneedyoungpeopleandnotdoanythingaboutit.It’sjustnotanoption.”

When Kurpjuweit saw the currentinfrastructure of Safety City, or lackthereof, he recognized the tremendouspotential to help the local non-profit,which educates thousands of studentsevery summer,while at the same time,creatinganopportunitythatbenefitsthefutureoftheconstructionindustry.

Theprogram’sgoalistosee50to100studentsworkontheprojectinyearone,and subsequently encourage interestedyouth toenter summerorpost-second-ary trades programs at Medicine HatCollege.

Forbescurrentlycreatestradesaware-ness through presentations to areaschools, and now with the Safety Cityexpansionproject,she’llbeabletoofferyouthwithanavenuetofurtherexploretheindustry.

“It’s going to expose them to all thedifferent levels of creating a projectlike this. They’ll have the opportunitytomeet local employers, they’ll get ex-posed to trades theywouldn’tnormallygetexposedto,becauseeventhoughIgoinand talkabout thedifferent trades, Ican’tgoinandtakethemachinistwithmeoranelectrician,sothiswaythey’llhavedirectexposureto localemployersand tradesmen and constructionwork-ers,”saysForbes.

Forbes is confident the programwillbeflourishandbepopularamongststu-dents:“Itwon’tbehardtogetkidsthat’llbe interested in helping out or com-ing to aproject like this to learn about

tradesanddosomethingtoenhancethecommunity.”

While remaining focused on a suc-cessfulfirstyearevent,ultimatelyKurp-juweitwould like to see the project in-spirethewholeprovince.

“Ifthisgoeswell,wouldn’titbegreatiffiveorsixotherlocalassociationsdothesamething?Tomethat’sthebigvictoryrightthere,”saysKurpjuweit.

While still under construction, it’ssafe to say the Safety City expansionproject will build something incrediblefor theMedicineHat community, localyouthandtheconstructionindustry.n

G one are the days of welcomewagons, freshly-baked muf-fins for the new neighbour

and block parties. Today’s busy sched-ules leave little time for chatting overhedges,while cell phones act as virtualfencesbetweenhousesandrelationships,

blockingout thecamaraderie thatonceexisted in communities.But inpocketsofMedicineHat,thatsenseofcommuni-tyoftenmissingisbeingrekindled.

“We’re doing a sort of an enhancedlandscaping to, if nothing else, attractpeople out of their houses and get out-

side and be a bit more active, be a bitmore involved in the community,” saysJohn Bulmer, urban development en-gineer with the City ofMedicineHat’sLandandPropertiesdepartment.

The city’s recently built subdivisionSouthlands received a robust landscap-ing upgrade post housing construc-tion.The concept was so well receivedby the residents in the community andthroughoutMedicineHat that theCitydecidedtobuildthenewareaofSaamisHeights, currently under constructioninthesouthernareaofthecity,withthisnewfocusfront-of-mind.

Features in these developments in-clude tree-lined boulevards, pedestriancorridors, better trails and landscapingfeatures including water elements andactivityareaswhereresidentscanthrowFrisbeesorkickfootballs.

“Wethought,‘let’sdostuffsothepeo-pleactuallygetoutside’.Insteadofbeingstuck in front of the TV, we’re givingthemopportunities to go and do otherstuff,” says Bulmer, who manages the

This same type of neighbourhood isalsobeingdevelopedinthenewRanch-lands 3C area in the city’s northeast,whichwillbeginconstructionnextyear,aswellasinanadditionaldivision,BrierRun,onthenorthside,whichis just inthepreliminarystages.

Anaddedbenefittotheenhancedde-velopments in Saamis Heights and theRanchlands subdivisions is the com-pletion of gaps in the Heritage TrailSystem,providinganadditionalavenueforpeopletogetoutsideandenjoytheircommunity. Ranchlands’ developmentwill also include opening up multipleconnections to theSouthSaskatchewanRiver, allowing citizens to get closer tothepicturesqueviews.

ThisrecentpushtobeautifyandbetterthenewareasofMedicineHatstemsinpartfromthedesiretomimichistoricalareas of the city where large elm treescanopyoverstreetsandneighbourhoodsare more intimate. The initiative alsoaligns with the City ofMedicine Hat’sstrategicobjectivestoimprovetheimageandprofileofthecommunity,aswellasincrease social wellness. To date, feed-backfromthecityandresidentshasbeenverypositive.

“We’regettingalotofencouragementfrompeople,thataregoing,‘ohthatisso

nice’. They’re seeing something specialhappening,”saysBulmer.“Wehavepeo-plelookingforwardtowhatwe’redoing,wantingusinsomewaytoreplicatesomeoftheseexperienceselsewhere.There’salevelofexcitementingettingthisgoingforward.”

While the City can’t force people toleave their homes and get outside, thenew features provide the much-neededopportunity (and often the necessaryencouragement) that can be lacking inotherdevelopments.

“It’salwayseasytodothesamethingover and over again; it becomes a bit

more challenging when you try to dothose levels of improvement,” saysBul-mer of the enhancements. “We don’tthinkwe’vegonetooextremeinwhatwewant to do. It’s reasonable steps up thelevelofimprovementthatwebelievewillmakeanoticeabledifference.”

Anew landmark building sitsprominentlyon thehorizon justoff the Trans-Canada Highway

onthenorthwestendofMedicineHat.TheCanaltaCentre, thenew regional

eventcentrebuiltbytheCityofMedicineHat,willofferamodernandcomfortableenvironmentforspectatorstoenjoyWHLhockeyandamultitudeofconcerts,fam-ilyshows,andtouringactsbeginninginAugust2015.

“The Canalta Centre will allowMed-icine Hat and area residents access toentertainment and events never beforeavailableinourcommunity,”saysMedi-cineHatMayorTedClugston.“Thefacili-tywillhelpkeeplocaldollarsinMedicineHat and bring in visitors and investorsfromothercommunities.”

At198,000squarefeet(totalgross),thefacilityhasaseatingcapacityof6,100forhockey games and more than 7,000 forconcerts and other events. Expansion

seatingpotentialexists foranadditional930 seats. Seating types include generalbowl, floor seating (for concerts), acces-sible seating, private suites, communitysuites, logeboxes,clubseats,andloungeseating.

The Medicine Hat Tigers will be thefacility’sprimarytenant,andwillplay36regularseasonhomegamesinthefacilityeachyear.Localfanswillenjoyaroomierconcourse, better access to concessionsandastate-of-the-artscoreclockwithvid-eoreplaycapability.

UnlikeTheArena,theCanaltaCentrewillbebettersuitedforawiderrangeofperformances,specificallyconcerts,withdesign features incorporated to providefor a quality sound experience. By July,animpressivelistofconcertshadalreadybeenadded to the facility’s calendar, in-cludingTragicallyHip,BarenakedLadies,Jason Aldean, The Tenors, Paul BrandtandDeanBrodyandCharliePride.

“SincetheopeningofTheEsplanade10yearsago,wehaveofferedawiderangeofperformancesandexhibitions,withstageshows focused on those best suited to amoreintimatetheatrevenue.”saysKarenCharlton, commissioner of Public Ser-vices. “The Canalta Centre allows us toofferdifferenttypesofperformancesandattractadditionalvisitors.”

City Council’s decision to build a re-gionaleventcentreisintendedtodomorethanbringinbignamesinentertainmentand sport. Creation of a new econom-ic driver and increased investment inthe community was a key factor in thedecision.

Thatdecisionwaspayingoffbeforethedoorswereevenopen,attractingCanalta,aWesternCanadianhoteldeveloperandoperator,toMedicineHat.

In June, Canalta was announced ashavingbeen awarded thenaming rightstothefacility.Inadditiontothenaming

rights,Canaltawillalsobeadvertisingandpromoting their Boston Pizza, HamptonInnandHome2Suites,byHiltonbrands,which will all have locations in the BoxSpringsBusinessPark.

“TheCanaltaannouncementwassignif-icantnotonlybecause theregionaleventcentre now has a name,” says Charlton.“The announcement demonstrates Can-alta’s confidence in the ability of this fa-cility to draw visitors and dollars to ourcommunity.”

EconomicsandentertainmentgohandinhandinMedicineHat.In2013,16percentofall tickets sold forEsplanade the-atreshowsweresoldtoout-of-townguests,generatinganapproximateeconomicspinoffof$1million.

Facility construction has already hada positive economic impact in MedicineHat.Manylocalbusinesses,includingme-chanical and electrical contractors, exca-vationandsiteworkscontractors,masons,drywallersandlandscapers,haveprovidedcontractedservicesandsupplies.

The$74.9-millionfacilityisbeingfund-ed for themostpartby theCityofMed-icineHat, $62.5million comes from theCity’sEventCentreReserveandCommu-nityCapitalReserveand$2.4millionfromtheProvince’sMajorCommunitiesFacil-itiesProgram.Theremaining$10millionwill come from community fundraisingor debenture borrowing.A ticket servicecharge has been approved to repay anyborrowedfunds.

A number of generous donations havedemonstrated community and regionalsupport for the constructionof the facil-ity. Box Springs Business Park donatedthe 20-acre site for themulti-use facility.CypressCountydonated$700,000 to thefacilityandTownofRedcliffhascommit-ted$10,000peryearforthenext10years.Afundraisingefforttosellbricksandseatplaqueswasalsounder-taken.

“Ourneighbouringmunicipalities,localbusinesses,andindividualshaveexpressedtheir excitement for this project,” saysClugston.“Wearebuildinganattractive,multi-purposefacilitythatrivalsanyotherinCanadaforacommunityoursize.Wecan’twaittoshowitoff.”n

Ariot of noise can be heard coming from MedicineHat’s Family Leisure Centre (FLC) and MethanexBowlonanygivenday.Wavessplashing,pucksring-

ing off boards, balls slapping into leather gloves, and thecrunchoffootballhelmetsareonlysupersededbythelaugh-terandsquealsofchildren,highfivesofteammates,andap-plauseandcheersfromparentsandfriends.

Already a hub for all-ages recreation, the FLC is under-goingamassiveexpansion,whichwillseenewf lexibleandmulti-purposefeaturesaddedtothefacilityandnewoppor-tunitiesavailableforactivechildren,families,andadultsofallages.

A place for everyoneBuiltin1999,theFLCislocatedon23hectares(57acres)of

landinthecity’snorthwest.Whenfirstopened,theaquaticsareaincludeda50-metremulti-purposepool,wavepool,swirlpool, children’s pool, hot tub, steam room, and the “Rip-n-Rattler”waterslide.Anicerinkanchoredtheotherendofthefacility,withavarietyofentertainmentrooms,meetingroomsandafoodconcessionroundingoutthefloorplan.

Today, the recreation complex is muchmore than what’sunder the FLC’s roof. Three regulation size soccer pitches,fourbaseballdiamonds,andaBMxtrackarealsoonsite.Thecrown jewel is theMethanexbowl,used for football, soccer,andrugby.

“Medicine Hat and area residents have for many yearsenjoyed a quality, affordable, family-friendly facility thatprovides an extensive roster of recreational opportunities,”saysKarenCharlton, theCity’s commissionerofPublicSer-vices.”However,asthecitygrew,demographicschangedanddemandforspacefromamultitudeofusergroupsincreased,itbecameclearweneededtolookatwhatwecoulddotomeettheneedsofourcommunityandthesurroundingarea.”

Meeting community needsIn 2012, City Council approved a $36-million expansion

and renovation project for the Family Leisure Centre andMethanexBowl.WithfinancialsupportfromboththeProv-ince of Alberta and the Government of Canada and fundsfromtheCityofMedicineHat,phase2oftheconstructionisnowunderway.

toseeinthecity,”saysToddSharpe,generalmanager,Parksand Recreation. “Almost every time we heard that anotherrunningtrackandadedicatedfieldhousewouldbetopofthelist.Wetriedourbesttoincludeasmanyoptionsinsideandoutsidethefacilityaspossibleusingthefundingwereceivedfromdifferentlevelsofgovernment.”

Thefederalandprovincialgovernmentseachprovided$10millionfortheproject,withtheremaining$16millioncom-ingfromtheCity.

Methanex Bowl improvementsOverthepasttwoyears,$2.6millioninimprovementshave

beenmadetotheMethanexBowl.In2013,improvementsin-cluded the replacement of the existing grass turf field withnewsyntheticturffieldsupportingbothalongerplayingsea-sonandgreaterplayersafety.

“The new surface provides athletes a higher quality, saf-er playing experience,” says Grant McKay, projects manag-erwith theCity’sPublicServicesDivision.“Over the longerterm, the turf also saves on operating costs, as lessmainte-nanceisrequired.”

Thefieldwasopenforafullyearofusein2014.“We received very positive comments from athletes and

coachesaboutthenewplayingsurface,”saysMcKay.“Theyaretellingusithasmadethevenueevenmoreattractiveforgamesandtournaments.”

In 2015, new bleachers providing seating for nearly 1,000additional spectators are being added and a new press boxinstalled.

Family Leisure Centre expansionAs work on theMethanex Bowl was progressing, detailed

designworkandconstructiondrawingsfortheFLCexpansionwerecompletedinthelatesummerof2014.Constructioncom-mencedshortlythereafter.TheprimarypublicareasoftheFLC,includingtheaquaticscentreandicerinkhaveremainedopenduringconstructionallowingpublicactivitytocontinue.

“Like any construction project there have beenminor set-backsandareaswherethecontractorshavebeenabletofindef-ficiencies,”saysMcKay.“Weareworkingwithinatightbudget,withachallengingsetofgoals.”

Thosegoalsincludemorethandoublingthesizeoftheexist-ingFLC.

Adouble gymnasiumwith space to accommodate two full-sizebasketballcourtsorfourfull-sizevolleyballcourts,200-me-trewalking/runningtrack,fieldhousewithtwin indoorboard-ed multi-purpose fields, vastly improved fitness centre, newmulti-purpose team change rooms, designated fitness changerooms,washroomsandmulti-purposeprogramrooms,storageareasandmeetingroomswillbeavailableonceconstructioniscompleteinJune2016.

Aswell, seating for500 spectatorswill be added to the ex-istingaquaticcentre,andcapacityforanother500toboththegymnasium and fieldhouse. Additional parking spaces andlandscapingarealsoincludedintheplans.

Withtheavailabilityofnewspace,comesnewopportunitiesforprogrammingpartnerships,saidSharpe.

“Wewanttocollaboratewithcommunitypartnerstohelpusrealizethemaximumpotentialofthespacetodeliverthegreat-est value for our residents,” Sharpe said. “We welcome theirideasandinvitediscussion.”

Welcomed with open armsTheFamilyLeisureCentrehasdrawnactivefamilies,school

groupsandresidentsfromMedicineHatandthesurroundingarea formore than15years.TheMethanexBowlhashostedathletesandcompetitorsfromacrossthecountry.Bothfacili-tieshavehadapositiveimpactonthephysicalhealthandso-cialandeconomicwell-beingofourcommunity.

“Weknowourcommunity is excited to takeadvantageofthe new opportunities the expansion project will provide,”says Charlton. “We hear regularly from our residents howmuchtheyappreciatelivinginacommunitywithawiderangeofaffordable,familyfriendlyrecreationactivitiesandameni-ties.Theexpansionandrenovationsprojectwillhelpusaddtowhatisalreadyalengthylistofthingstodotobeactiveandhealthyinourcommunity.

Inamatterofafewhoursmorethan10,000peoplewereevacuatedbeforehundredsofstructuresincludinghomes,Ath-leticPark,VeinerCentre,LionsPark,andStrathconaParkwereflooded.Thewaterwas running so fast the equivalent of thecontents of two Olympic-sized swimming pools was passingeverysecond.

Now,in2015,thelandscapearoundtheSouthSaskatchewanRiver is changing in an ambitious effort to protectMedicineHat,whereinanygivenyear,there’saonepercentchanceofmajorflooding.Despitethelowodds,thecityhasexperiencedmajorfloodingthreetimesinthelast20years.

Over1,000uniquefloodrelatedpermitshavebeenissuedinMedicineHatsincethewatersoftheSouthSaskatchewanRiverreceded.ThemostexpensiveprojectisonebeingundertakenbytheCityitselfasMedicineHatmovesforwardwitha$58-mil-lionfloodprotectionstrategy.Thestrategywilleventuallyre-sultinovereightkilometresofberms,newfloodgates,andnew

stormseweroutfallbackflowpreventersputinplacetoprotecthomes, businesses, infrastructure, and the community. TheCityalsohasacomplimentarysystemoftemporarymeasurestosupplementthepermanentbermsandservesitespecificneedsaslocalconditionschange.

HarlowThe lovely tree-filled neighbourhood ofHarlow sits just to

thesoutheastof theTrans-CanadaBridgealong thesouthernbanksoftheSouthSaskatchewanRiver.Inthe1960s,asthecityexpandedwestward, the first homes started to replace farm-land.Bythe1980s,theneighbourhoodwasfullybuiltoutandcontainedamixofhousesandgreenspace.Asbeautifulasthesettingis,forhomesalongtheriverthere’scanbeapricetopay.InthelasttwodecadesHarlowhasbeenthroughseveralfloodevents,withthemostseriousoccurringin1995and2013.Noweffortsareunderwaytoprotectthearea.

A storm water managementpondwillalsobeconstructedtoholdrainwaterthatcannotbedischargedintotheriverduringafloodeventwhilethestormgatesareclosed.ThisworkcontinuestomoveaheadontheLi-onsParkphase1siteandwillprotecttheparkandtheNorthRiverFlatsarea.

ThedesignofanearthenbermisbasedonstrictguidelinesdevelopedbytheAmericanArmyCorpofEngineers.

“Materialtype,liftthickness,compaction,andmoisturecon-tentduringconstructionallhaveanimpactontheintegrityofthefinishedberm,”saysCityofMedicineHatProjectManagerCarlieCollier.“AprojectlikethisisrelativelynewtoSouthernAlberta.Itwasalargelearningopportunityforallofusandweareveryconfidentintheresults.Ourconsultant,Stantec,wasable todrawon their international experience andbalance itwiththeirlocalknowledgeoftheriverandourcity.”

River Road The River Road Flood Protection Strategy provides pro-

tection for threepublic facilities:CityHall,CourtofQueen’sBench, and the Provincial Law Courts. Modifications to theparkinggarageentrancesat eachbuildingbegan inMay.ThefinalproductwillenableCitypersonneltoerectfloodbarriersintheeventofahigh-waterevent.Theremovablefloodwalliscomposed of interlocking aluminum planks and steel posts,whicharequicklyassembledandsealwatertightwheninplace.

“Previous protectionmethods for these loca-tions required a signifi-cantamountofmaterialsand manpower leadinguptoafloodevent,”notesCollier. “With this newsystem, building oper-ators are able to installthe systemwithin hourswhich will free up pre-cious resources to con-centrateonothervulner-ableareas.”

Storm Sewer Outfall Backflow PreventionTheCityofMedicineHathasover120stormoutfall struc-

tures draining storm water from streets and ponds into theSouth Saskatchewan River, Seven Persons Creek, and RossCreek. During high-flow events on these waterways, waterbacksup through the storm systemandadds to thefloodingproblem.Topreventthisfromoccurringinthefuture,backflowpreventionvalvesarebeinginstalledintothenearly40outfallsthatliewithinthefloodfringe.

TheFloodProtection Strategyprojects are proceedingwellandwithadrierthannormalspringin2015,residentsofMed-icineHat breathed a little easier.There are still a number ofprojectson thebooks for theCityofMedicineHat’sMunici-palWorksDepartment,someofwhichawaitapprovals.Inthemeantime,theCityisfullypreparedtoprotectthecommunitywithtemporaryfloodprotectionusingproductsincludingBar-ricage,HescoCART,andMuscleWall.n

F or over 30 years, Medicine HatCollege has offered courses indrafting,design,andillustration.

But today, the Computer Aided Draft-ing andDesign (CADD) andTechnicalIllustratorprogramprovidesamorein-depthopportunityforparticipants.

“It is an integrative program, teach-ing skills in variousdisciplines such asresidential,commercialandmechanical,fabricationdesign and civil surveying,”says instructor JamesKuehn. “Studentsaregettingabroadlearningexperience.”

The program has one other compel-lingfeaturethatisalmostunheardofinthiseconomy:100percentofgraduates,holdingeither theone-yearCADDcer-tificateorthetwo-yearCADDTechnicalIllustrationdiploma,havefoundjobsinMedicineHat,largerAlbertacommuni-ties,orevenasfarawayasIndia,overre-centyears.FourstudentswerehiredthisyearatF.S.ScottManufacturingLtd.toworkwiththeBlueImpgroup,whichhasthedistinctionofbeingCanada’slongeststandingplaygroundmanufacturer.

Other unique features take thestudents from the classroom to thecommunity.

Take the three-way partnership in-volving Habitat for Humanity, theMedicine Hat chapter of the CanadianHome Builders Association (CHBA),andtheprogram,forexample.Studentsaregiventhehomedesignguidelinesforbuilding aHabitat forHumanity homeand,bysemester’send,supplya fullsetof technical drawings and presentationdesign boards, using 3D software andvideos.IfHabitatisbuildingahome,thestudentsjoininwiththeproject.

Ifnot,theyworkintheReStore(aspotwheresuppliersandbuildersdonatesur-plusordiscontinueditemssuchasdoors,windows,lightingfixtures,andcabinets;these items are repurposed and sold tothe communitywith the revenue goingback to the charity). Further, pairs ofstudents are matched with associationvolunteers, explains fellow instructorPeterKelly.Theseindustryprosmentorthe students, reviewing what they arebuilding and providing guidance re-gardingconstructionordesignpracticesandprincipals.

Programstudentsworkhardbutthereis room forplay. Inyearone, they takepart in a CADDapult project, makingfoot-longprojectilesusing3Dcomputermodelling,technicaltheory,andartisticskills learned during the year.There isacompetitionout intheyardusingthe

CADDapultstoflingmarbles.“Wearegoingfordistanceandaccu-

racy,”explainsKuehn.Flagsaresetuponthegroundatvari-

ousdistancesandstudentshavetoselectwhichflagstheyaretargeting;pointsareawardedtothoseclosesttotheirchosenflags. The public address system keepsviewers and participants up to date asto who is in the lead andwho is com-ingaclosesecond.Thisyear,employeesfromMeggittTrainingSystems(someofwhomwere alumni of the CADD pro-gram)cameinforaclasstohelpthestu-dents build their high-tech slingshots.Theyalsoprovidedfinancialsupportforthe event. A cadre of high school stu-dents,whowereonsite takinga tourofthecollege,alsotookpartinthefun.

has anupcycling component. Studentsgo to theRestore andaregiven$25 tospend on items they will use to con-struct something back at the collegeworkshop. Once the building projectsare finished, they are donated back totheRestorewhichauctions themoffatannual meetings. One innovative stu-dentmadeashabby-chicshelvinginthefollowing way: he stained a couple ofusedpallets foundonthecollegecam-pus, added a nice, round mirror, andtransformedoldforksandsomescrews(all of which came from the Restore)to form hooks formounting. Anotherused closet doors and found pallets tobuild the framework for a three-tieredshelvingunit.Toaddabitofcachettothedesign,sheembeddedbitsofsmoky,tempered glass into the wood. Thesetwounitswererecentlyondisplayatthelibrarydowntown, formembers of thecommunitytoappreciate.

The board of directors of the localCHBAissoimpressedbythecaliberofprogram students that they have cre-atedastudentcategoryat theirannualAwardsofExcellence(formerlyTopHatAwards) ceremony. Two teams wereselected this year for their progressiveandbuild-readydesignsreflectinggoodflowandspacearrangement.Theteamsof Chris Brooks/Jade Greenwald andKulvirSinghBajwa/HarpingerMinhaswerehonouredfortheirworkindesign-ing three-bedroom homes for HabitatforHumanity.

Skill development in the classroom,industry knowledge from the commu-nity, mentorship with practitioners,partneringwithcharitiesandbeingcel-ebratedbygroupsliketheCHBAserveto provide excellent opportunities forthestudentsbutalsoincreaseawarenessoftheprogram.Thisisacriticalsecond-arygoalofprograminstructors–togetthewordoutaboutthediversityofthecurriculumandapplicabilityoftheskillset.
