Medicine Source Test 2 Were Hippocrates’ ideas about medicine important? Background: The ancient Greeks had many ideas about the causes and treatments of illnesses. The Greek doctor, Hippocrates, who lived sometime between 460BC and 377BC, developed theories about why people felt ill and the sorts of treatment that would work best for them. Hippocrates and his followers trained many doctors who followed Hippocratic methods. But at the same time, the Greeks were taking their sick friends and relatives to Asclepions, where they believed Asclepius, the god of healing, would cure them. Does this mean that Hippocrates’ ideas were not important? S Source A A man came here with an abscess in his stomach. When asleep in the Temple of Asclepius, he had a dream. It seemed to him that the god ordered his servants to hold him tightly so that he could cut open his stomach. The man tried to get away, but they gripped him and bound him. Asclepius cut his belly open, removed the abscess and , after having stitched him up again, released him fro his bonds. He then walked out, but the floor was covered in blood. Ambrosia of Athens became blind in one eye. She had always laughed at Asclepius’s cures, but one night she dreamed he was standing beside her. He promised to make her eye better if she gave a silver pig to the Asclepion as a memorial to her ignorance. She agreed and he cut into her diseased eyeball and poured in some medicine. When she woke in the morning, she was cured. Some of the inscriptions found carved into the wall of the Asclepion at Epidaurus. They record cures said to have happened in the Asclepion. Source B.
