Cure for Drunkness

Suphate of Iron 5 grains

Magnesia 10 grains

Peppermint Water 11 drachms

Spirits of Nutmeg 1 drachm

Mix together well and use

twice a day. This preparation

acts as a tonic and stimulant,

and so partially supplies

the place of the accustomed

liquor, and prevents that

absolute physical and mental

prostration that follows a sud-

den breaking off from the use

of stimulating drinks.

Cathartic Pills

Extract Colacinth

Jolop

Calomel

Gamboge

Mix these ingredients

together and with water form

into mass and roll into 180

pills. Dose, one pill as a mild

laxative, two in vigorous

operations. Use in all bilious

diseases when purges are

necessary.

Mix well and let stand for 24

hours. Apply to affected area

as often as needed.

Mix all ingredients together

Blackberries

Water

Sugar

Jamaica Ginger

Alcohol

Syrup

Crush Blackberries and add

to boiling water. Add Sugar,

Jamaica Ginger, and Alcohol.

Mix and add syrup, enough to

make 16 ounces.

Cure for Piles

Confection of Senna 2 oz.

Cream of Tartar 1 oz.

Sulphur 1 oz.

Syrup of Ginger varies

Mix ingredients together with

enough Syrup of Ginger to

make a stiff paste. A piece as

large as a nut is to be taken as

often as necessary to keep the

bowels open.

Healing Salve

Lard 1 lb.

Resin ½ lb.

Sweet Elder bark ½ lb.

Simmer over a slow fire for 4

hours, or until if forms a hard,

brown salve. This is for the

cure of cuts, bruises, boils, old

sores, and all like ailments.

Spread on a cotton cloth and

apply to the parts effected.

Eye Water

Table Salt

White Vitriol

Soft Water

White Sugar

Blue Vitriol

Heat the Table Salt and White

Vitriol on earthen dish until

dry. Add soft water, White

Sugar, and Blue Vitriol. Should

this be too strong, add a little

more water. Apply to the eye 3

or 4 times a day.

Sweet Elder bark ½ lb.

hours, or until if forms a hard,

Magnetic Ointment

Elder Bark 1 lb.

Spikenard Root 1 lb.

Yellow Dock Root 1 lb.

Resin 8 lbs.

Beeswax 1 lb.

Boil Elder Bark, Spikenard

Root, and Yellow Dock Root

in two gallons of water until it

is boiled down to one gallon.

Then press the strength out of

the bark and roots and boil the

liquid down to ½ gallon. Add

Resin and Beeswax to soften.

Apply to the sores by spread-

ing on linin cloth.

Ointment Stramonium

Stramonium Leaves 1 lb.

Lard 3 lbs.

Yellow Wax ½ lb.

Boil the Stramonium Leaves

in the Lard until they become

pliable, then strain through

linen. Lastly add the wax

previously melted and stir

until they are cold. This is a

useful anodyne application

in irritable ulcers, painful

hemorrhoids, and in

cutaneous eruptions.

For Heartburn

Gum Arabic 1 oz.

Licorice Root 1 oz.

Magnesia ¼ oz.

Pulverize the Licorice Root

and mix with the Gum Arabic

and Magnesia. Add water to

make into lozenges. Let dis-

solve in mouth and swallow.

Sweet Oil 1 gal.

Oil Hemlock 2 oz.

Oil Organum 2 oz.

Chloroform 2 oz.

Spirits Ammonia 4 oz.

Mix together well. Let stand

24 hours and it is ready for

use. Dose, internally, one

teaspoonful for adults. Bathe

the affected parts well. This is

a great remedy for aches and

pains, Rheumatism, Neu-

ralgia, and all nervous and

inflammatory diseases.

Magic Oil

Toothache

Alum 4 oz.

Sweet Spirits of Nitre 14 oz.

Pulvarize the Alum and mix

with the Spirits of Nitre. This

is the most effective remedy

for toothache that was ever

discovered.

Smith’s Tonic

Solution of Arsenic

Culiver’s Root

Syrup Orange Peel

Simple Syrup

Chinchonia

Aromatic Sulphuric Acid

Mix together the Solution of

Arsenic, Culiver’s Root, Syrup

Orange Peel, and Simple

Syrup. Then add Chinchonia

dissolved in Sulphuric Acid.

Shake to mix well.

Cinchona Bark 4 oz.

Warner’s Safe Cure

Smart Weed 4 lbs.

Soft Water 1 gal.

Acetate Potash 4 oz.

Sugar 4 lbs.

Alcohol 8 oz.

Boil Smart Weed in Soft

Water for one hour, strain

off, and add Acetate Potash

and sugar. Boil again till

sugar is dissolved, then add

alcohol and Flacor with Oil

of Wintergreen.

Warner’s Safe Cure

Smart Weed 4 lbs.

for one hour; then strain off

and add Acetate Potash and

Sugar. Boil again till sugar is

dissolved, then add Alcohol

and Flacor with Oil of Winter-

green.

Cure for Small Pox

Cream of Tartar 1 oz.

Water 1 pint

Dissolve the Cream of Tartar

in boiling waster. It is to be

drank when cold at intervals.

It can be taken any time, and

as a preventive as well as a

curative. It is known to have

cured thousands of cases

without a failure.

Tetter Ointment

Spirits Turpentine 1 oz.

Red Precipitate 1 oz.

Burgundy Pitch 1 oz.

Hog’s Lard 1 lb.

Melt all of these ingredients

over a slow fire until the oint-

ment is formed. Stir until cold.

Spread on a linen rag and

apply to the parts affected.

Stramonium Leaves 1 lb.

Lard 3 lbs.

in the Lard untile they become

linen. Lastly add the was

Inflammatory Rheumatism

Salt Petre 1 oz.

Sweer Oil 1 pint

Pulverize the Salt Petre and

mix with the Sweet Oil. Bathe

the parts affected three times

a day with this mixture and a

speedy cure will be the result.

Cure for Small Pox

Cream of Tartar 1 oz.

Water 1 pint

Dissolve the Cream of Tartar

in boiling water. Drink when

cold at intervals. It can be

taken at any time, and as a

preventive as well as a cura-

tive. It is known to have cured

in thousands of cases without

failure.

Mountain Salve

Beeswax 1 lb.

Soft Butter 1 lb.

Soft Turpentine 1 ½ lbs.

Balsam Fir 12 oz.

Mix all together, melt and

strain. Use this salve to heal

fresh wounds, burns, scalds,

and all bad sores.

Hop Bitters

Hops 4oz.

Orange Peet 2 oz.

Cardamon 2 drachms

Cinnamon 1 drachm

Cloves ½ drachm

Alcohol 8 oz.

Sherry Wine 2 pints

Simple Syrup 1 pint

Grind the drugs, macerate

in the alcohol and wine for

one week, percolate and add

enough syrup and water to

make on gallon.
