    Initial Set-up

The following guides you step by step through the initial set up ofthe navigation system.

Firstly, remove the foil for protecting the device during transpor-

    tation from the display.

    I. Charging the battery

Attention: It can be necessary to recharge the bat-tery for some time initially before it is possible to runthrough the initial installation, according to the stateof charging of the battery installed.

Please pay attention to the following notes when handling thebattery:

The charging status display lights orangeuntil the naviga-tion system is charged. Do not interrupt the charging proc-ess before the battery is fully charged. This may take a fewhours. The navigation system is fully charged if the chargingdisplay lights green.

You can use the navigation system during the charging

process, but the power supply must not be interrupted dur-ing initial set-up.

To fully charge the built-in battery, the external powersource should remain continuously connected to the device.

You can leave the main adapter connected, and this is veryhandy for continuous operation. Please note, that both thecar adapter as well as the optional power adapter are con-suming power, even when the battery of the navigation

system is not being charged. It can take several minutes until the device is ready to op-

erate again, following the connection of the external powersupply, if the charging state of the battery is very low.

The battery will even be charged while the device isswitched off completely.

needs using the Settingsbutton on the main screenof your device.

    III. Installing the Navigation software

Your device has already been equipped with the basic data of thenavigation software at the factory and the final installation of thenavigation software will take place automatically from the internalmemory. Follow the onscreen instructions.

The memory card must always be inserted in the device while thenavigation system is being used. It will be necessary to carryout a Soft Reset to restart the navigation system if the memorycard has been removed, only for a short time, while the systemwas being used (see page 25).

    Working with Memory Cards

Your navigation system supports MMC and SD memory cards.

    Inserting Memory Cards

    1. Carefully take the optionalmemorycard out of its packing (if included).Take care not to touch or dirty thecontacts.

    2. Insert the memory card carefullyinto the card bay with contactspointing backwards. The printedside of the memory card must face

forward. The card must lock easily.

    Removing Memory Cards

Note: Only remove the memory card if the naviga-tion software has been closed and the device hasbeen switched off by means of the On/Off button be-forehand. Otherwise you will risk a loss of data.

    1.

To remove the card press lightly onto the upper edge untilit ejects.

    2. Pull the card out without touching the contacts.

    3. Store the memory card in the packing or in another safelocation.

    Accessing Memory Cards

The appliance only supports memory cards in the FAT16/32file format. If you insert a card prepared with a different for-mat (e.g. in cameras, MP3 players), your navigation systemmay not recognize it and will ask you to format it again.

Warning: Formatting the memory card irretrievablywipes out all data.

    Data exchange via card reader

However, if you wish to copy large quantities of data (MP3 files, navigation maps) to the memory card, these can also be storeddirectly to the memory card.

Many computers already have a card reader. Insert the card inthis and copy the data directly to the card.

Because of the direct access you can achieve a much highertransfer rate compared to using ActiveSync.

    Resetting the navigation system(Soft Reset)

Choose this option if your navigation system is not responding orworking properly.

This option restarts the navigation system, without reinstallationbeing necessary. A soft-reset is often used in order to reorganizethe memory. In doing so all programs that are running are inter-rupted and the working memory is reinitialized.

    Perform the soft-reset as follows:

Press the tip of the stylus into the soft-reset switch opening or

insert a pointy object (e.g. a paper clip, which has been bent

open) with slight pressure into the reset opening.

    Switching the Device off Completely/

    Hard Reset

Warning: A hard reset will delete all datain thetemporary memory.

Your navigation system will normally be in the Standby Mode, if

you have switched it off by pressing the on/off button briefly. Inaddition, the system can be switched off completely; the con-sumption of energy can be kept as low as possible through this. All the data in the temporary memory will be lost if the device isswitched off completely (hard reset).

Switch your navigation system off completely in this way:

Press the on/off button for 6 seconds.

The device will be switched on again by pressing the on/offbut-

tonagain for approx.3 seconds. The software will nothave to be installed again, if your devicehas already been furnished with the basic data of the navigationsoftware in the permanent memory in the factory.

    GPS (Global Positioning System)

GPS is a satellite-backed system for determining your position. With the help of 24 satellites revolving around the earth, it is pos-sible to determine your position on earth with the accuracy of a

few meters. The satellite signals are received by the antenna ofthe built-in GPS receiver, which must have a "line of sight" to atleast 4 of these.

Note: By limited line of sight (e.g. in tunnels, be-tween houses, in woods or also in vehicles withmetal-coated windows) it is not possible to determinethe position. The satellite reception however auto-matically picks up again as soon as the obstacle has

been passed and there line of sight is reestablished again.Moving slowly (e.g. slow walking) also limits the ac-curacy of the navigation.

The GPS receiver consumes additional power. This is especially ofconcern, when running on batteries. To conserve power do notturn on the GPS receiver unnecessarily. Also terminate the Navi-gation Software, if it is not needed or satellite reception is notpossible for a longer period, for this reason. However, you can

also switch the device off by means of the On/Off switch in thecase of a shorter interruption to your journey. Pressing the sameswitch again will activate a restart. The GPS receiver will also bereactivated at the same time, if navigation software is still active. Here, it can take a short time for the position to be updatedagain, according to the reception situation.

Note:Please note, that your appliance is preset tonotshut down automatically after a few minutes

without activity. You can change this preset in the Set-tingsmode. If the GPS receiver has not been activefor some hours, it must orientate itself again. This

    process may take a while.

    TMC (Traffic Message Channel)

TheTraffic Message Channel(TMC) is a digital radio data ser-vice that functions in a similar way to RDS and is used to transmitdisruptions to traffic to a suitable reception device.

The traffic information is continuously transmitted across FM.

The user is less dependent on the half-hourly broadcast trafficinformation, because the signal is continuously transmitted. Apartfrom this, important information, as in the case of people drivingon the wrong side of the road for example, can be passed on im-mediately.

The transmission is planned for the whole of Europe and is al-ready offered by radio transmitters in many countries. The preci-

sion of the TMC messages can deviate greatly according to thecountry.

The evaluation of TMC messages is not supported by every typeof navigation software. Enquire whether your system supportsTMC before the possible purchase of a TMC receiver
