MEDLINE• MEDLINE is the United States National Library of
Medicine’s bibliographic database in fields such as Medicine, Nursing, Allied health, Pre-clinical sciences etc.
• It contains over 13 million citations to journal articles, including reviews and clinical trials
• 4,600 biomedical journals published in the United States and in 70 other countries
• Dating back to 1950, with daily updates
MEDLINE
• Records are indexed with MeSH headings
• MeSH terms provide a consistent way of retrieving information that uses different terminology for the same concept.
• Abstracts are included for more than 75% of the records
Different Interfaces
• In Oxford, MEDLINE runs from the OVID Web Gateway
and PubMed
• Ovid: http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/oxlip/
• PubMed: http://www.pubmed.gov
Advantages of OVID Web Gateway
• Guided through selections for a precise search based on MeSH headings and limits
• Links to full-text collections subscribed by OULS
• Same interface as other medical databases
Ovid Platform
These medical and related databases are now available on Ovid:
• AMED – complementary medicine• British Nursing Index• Cinahl – nursing• Embase – pharmacology• Global Health – public health & tropical medicine• HMIC – Health Management Information Consortium• IBSS – International Bibliography of the Social Sciences• Medline - medicine• PsycInfo - psychology
Disadvantages of OVID Web Gateway
• Best results obtained by separate entry of search concepts and using the “Combine Searches” feature
• Users might find frustrating to have to examine the search closely in order to select relevant subject headings
Features of OVID Web Gateway• Searching - Map Term to Subject Heading: Mapping finds relevant subject headings - Combine searches: Uses Boolean operators to combine the results of search statements - Limits: Restricts results to language, age groups, year of publication, etc. - Find citation: Useful for checking a faulty or incomplete reference
• Locating full-text articles: Follow the link “Tour Oxford Full Text” to check electronic availability
Features of OVID Web Gateway• Viewing results: By selecting fields and clicking the Display
button
• Printing, Emailing and Saving: The Results Manager is located at the end of every Results display page
• Export to RefWorks or other personal bibliographic management software
• Setting AutoAlerts to favourite data sets
Use PubMed
• To get free access anywhere on the Internet
• To get quick results with strategies automatically created for you
