Five years ago, with babes in arms, we launched Kent Mama magazine. Little did we know that over time the magazine would grow to a print run of 37,000 and be read by mums, dads, grandparents, parents-to-be and those with teenagers.

The start of the new school year is a new beginning for some – new schools, new jobs, new classes. And we felt it was time to update our name to better refl ect you, our readers.

Our priority, with Kent mama and now Kent Family, has always been to produce a high-quality magazine that is interesting and fun to read, shares local information and that also helps promote Medway businesses, many of which are run by local parents.

So, as summer starts to fade and we settle back into our routines, this issue is packed with ideas for activities and classes, the low-down on local swimming pools, Medway news, days out, and tips from other parents on surviving the fi rst term.

as they get home (or to the childminders). It does get better, but in the meantime parents need to think about how to avoid them napping too long then not sleeping at bedtime! Having an early tea as soon as they get home means they can go straight to bed and will often sleep til morning. Plan meals in advance that are quick to prepare. If your child is has school dinners, make a cold snack beforehand and leave it ready in the fridge. If the weather's nice have it for a picnic on the way home. this year the Medway test and Kent test both took place in september. While families await the results, we spoke to parents whose children took the exam last year.

“The 11+ is uniquely stressful. We tried to avoid the whirlpool of anxiety by outlining a Plan B. We pictured the situation if our child did not pass and planned for it in a positive way just as we planned and practised for taking the 11+. We talked about these options as a family to help put the exam into perspective. After all, it is only one day in a child’s life.” pernille richards, mum of 2, Headcorn

“Don’t be tempted to look at the email or open the envelope without your child present, they have put the work in, they deserve to be there to get the news, good or bad. Don’t quote scores. If they passed they don’t need to know by how much; if they didn’t the same is true.

We rewarded our son for doing his best when he did the exam– rather than promising him gifts if he passed. It’s important they know you are proud of them whatever the outcome. After the results, things move on surprisingly quickly at school. A handful of children passed but there were many who didn’t, so there is no shame in not passing. It’s likely there will be others from their class going to the same school as them, so look forward in a constructive way to where they will be going to, rather than dwelling on where they could have gone.”p roberts, dad of 3, chatham

Maths is like Marmite – you either love it or hate it! But add in new terminology and teaching methods such as number bonds and number lines and it can be doubly confusing. We spoke to Inge Watson of Kip McGrath Medway, a qualified teacher, and asked how parents can help their children be maths confident.

How is maths taught at primary school?

We speak to a lot of parents who want to help their children but realise that maths is taught differently compared with their school days. The biggest development is that children are taught that there is

more than one way to do subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. They are encouraged to learn a variety of methods so that they can choose to solve a problem in the way they think is best.

Mental maths

There is a strong emphasis on mental maths in primary schools. Mental maths means solving a maths problem in your head. Children are encouraged to learn tables, halving, doubling, rounding up or down and number bonds by heart and use these facts to help solve problems.

In the classroom this can involve singing times tables or playing games in a circle where children shout out

Number Bonds are

pairs of numbers which, when added together, make up each number. I.e. The number bonds

for five are 1+4, 2+3, 0+5.

Partitioning involves splitting up a number into

more manageable parts. For example, when adding 22+23 you can add 20+20 and 2+3 separately and then add the results

together to reach the final answer.

How parents can help?

It’s not surprising that many parents feel reluctant to help their children in case they do things the wrong way. But there are many practical things that can be done so that children can gain confidence and grow to enjoy maths.

l Games like Snakes and Ladders, Dominoes and Monopoly are a fun way to learn to count, add up and score.l Cooking is a fantastic way to learn about weights, measurement and ratio, as is helping with putting up a shelf or decorating a bedroom. l Sharing a pizza is a tasty method to introduce fractions, decimals and percentagesl Giving your child pocket money will help them to add up whether they can afford a particular toy or game. l Use both analogue and digital clocks with your child to work out how long their favourite TV programme is.l Draw objects using triangles, squares or other geometric patterns.l If you are on a car journey, your children can add up the numbers on the licence plates of the cars they see.

An ideal first stop is the Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre. Part of The Old Royal Naval College, it gives a great overview of Greenwich and its part in London, and England’s, history. There are lots of hands-on activities, and the information is well presented and quite in-depth: the centre manages to make it engaging without falling

Many Kent families are keen to take advantage of our proximity to london by visiting free attractions such as the science Museum or natural History Museum. However, a family-friendly hidden gem that is often overlooked is Greenwich. situated within easy to reach from Kent by train or car, it can also be reached from central london by the docklands light railway, bus or river boat.

Greenwich MarketCrafts, food, homewares, art and fresh produce are all available at the famous Greenwich Market – currently celebrating it’s 25th anniversary. Situated in the centre of the one- way system, it is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5:30pm. With a fantastic range of unusual bits and bobs for children and adults alike it’s a great place to buy gifts, pick up some food-to-go or browse the many independent stalls.

A walk up a steep hill will bring you to one of Greenwich’s most famous attractions - the Royal Observatory - which is frankly amazing (and like Discover Greenwich, it’s free). If you have young children with you it is probably best to concentrate on one of the two galleries for a single visit. The Astronomy Galleries are a mix of interesting hands-on activities and static displays. Even if your children have never shown an interest in anything astronomically related, they are sure to fi nd something here that interests them. The other half of the

There are plenty of other things to do in Greenwich, making it a place you can come back to visit again and again. The National Maritime Museum takes in not just the Observatory but also galleries

concerned with Maritime exploration, art and history. The ‘village’ of Greenwich itself is very pleasant and well worth a stroll around. And one of my favourite, if bizarre things to do when in Greenwich is to walk under the Thames to the Isle of Dogs via the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. Kids enjoy the slight spookiness of it and marvel at the thought they are walking under the river!

So whether your family is interested in art, open spaces, pretty things to look at or architecture, Greenwich has something for everyone.

Royal Observatory, the Time Galleries, concentrates on telling the story of the Meridian Line, and time in general. The Observatory often runs free activities targeted at families.

Medieval Fun in Rochester - Sat 4th & Sun 5th September

Knights in tournament, falcons in flight and even fire breathing monks can all be seen at

Medieval Merriment, a free family weekend at Rochester Castle Gardens on Saturday, 4

and Sunday, 5 September. The castle grounds will be transformed into a vast medieval

encampment, taking visitors back to the time when the castle was built and used as a

residence. The event will be open from 11am to 5pm on both days and entrance to the

Japan comes to Medway for the Will Adams Festival. The sights and sounds of the Far East

will come to Gillingham on Saturday, 11 September with the annual Will Adams

Each year, to celebrate the diversity of coastal and marine wildlife, Kent County Council and other local organisations run Kent Coastal Week - eight days of free or subsidised activities, walks, talks and workshops.

“Being a governor is one way all of us can play a part in making schools a success. However, it is not just parents but all members of a community that make up a governing body. Anyone who cares about their local schools can become a school governor, and

successful governing bodies include people from all walks of life whose experiences contribute to the running of the school.

No qualifi cations are needed; we provide a free, comprehensive governor training programme. Meetings are usually held three or four times a year, with detailed work taking place in smaller committees. We like governors to visit the school when possible, but it’s up to individuals to decide

how much time to commit. Being a governor can enhance a career, giving wide-ranging experience of management. You will also develop team skills by working together with the headteacher to raise the standards of achievement in schools. Being a governor is a rewarding role, which makes a real difference.”

Why did you get into child modelling?We moved to Medway about eight years ago with our children Riza (13) and Omer (6). But it wasn’t until my daughter Alara was born in 2008 that the whole modelling thing came about. During my pregnancy I looked through lots of magazines full of beautiful babies in adverts and thought I’d give it a try. A friend who had been a child model herself recommended an agency, so when Alara was just 4 months old I sent them some pictures of her that I’d taken at home. To my delight they replied asking to meet us, as they felt Alara’s look was what clients in the industry were searching for.

How much time do you spend on modelling?Alara’s fi rst year was extremely busy. The castings came fl ooding in almost immediately from magazines such as Practical Parenting

children there so he got to hang out, make friends and play dress up. The modelling world is not for everyone and is defi nitely not as glamorous as it seems.

How much does it cost and what can you earn?Not all casting directors pay for your travel so you can fi nd yourself paying out for train fares and petrol. As children can only work a certain amount of hours, the agency will need to get a children’s entertainments/fi lm licence from the your local council and a doctor's assessment that your child is fi t to work, both of which you need to organise and pay for. Agencies charge an annual fee to keep you on their books; this can be between £40-£125. The agency also takes a small commission from each job. On the plus side, earnings can range from £50-£85 per hour up to £400 per day.

How do you handle the rejection?If a client does not select your child for a job then you have to understand that your child was not what they were looking for, and not think that your child was unattractive or ugly. Sometimes clients go for unusual or quirky -looking children with a lot of character, rather than a traditionally pretty look. It all depends on the role they want that child to play so you shouldn’t take it personally if they don’t pick your child. When you see your child in a commercial or magazine it makes you very proud. But, models or not, they will always be our little stars!

Do’s and Don’ts

don’t reply to advertsGenuine agencies RARELY advertise. They always operate via word of mouth. Personally I would avoid replying to ads offering to make your child a star or attending hotel auditions. They are often just a way to make you part with money.

never give money without a meetingDon’t sign a contract or give money without fi rst meeting the agency. I would suggest sending photos to a few different agencies to see what the response is like and choose the agency that feels right for you and your child.

dol Open a bank account in your child’s name. Most agencies will insist they pay your child directly.l Make sure your child is happy in front of a camera, is well mannered and is polite to adults. Methodl Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4.

l Beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until fl uffy, then fold

in the honey and lime juice to loosen the mixture.

l Combine all the remaining ingredients in another bowl

and then fold into the wet mixture a couple of spoonfuls at a time and mix well.

l Transfer to a non-stick baking tin and bake for 60 minutes or until a skewer comes out completely clean.

But as the year progressed, I gradually learnt of the many varied activities and places to visit with a baby, and I even managed to make some friends along the way. So to help all new mums out there, here is my top fi ve list of things to do with under 1s in Medway . . .

Baby Bounce and rhyme at Medway libraries‘Incy Wincy Spider’, ‘Humpty Dumpty’ and ‘Wind the Bobbin Up’ are just a few nursery rhymes sung by the doting mums and dads to their babies in this fun, interactive group. Lasting for half an hour and completely free, this is a great way to make friends. Refreshments are provided afterwards and parents are welcome to stay and chat while the babies play with the toys. We have a young people’s zone which links to the MixitOnline website (www.mixitonline.co.uk) with activities and advice for teenagers and young people in Medway.

can parents still call you?Yes, we have a team of staff who can deal with telephone enquiries weekdays between 9am and 5pm. Most of our telephone enquiries are regarding childcare, after school care and playschemes for the school holidays; however, we can also provide information on activities for children, playgroups and family support. We also receive a lot of enquiries via email. Our main role is a signposting service. Our team doesn’t provide the end service but, for example, if you wanted to find out about information on child tax credits or respite care for a disabled child – then we would know where to direct your enquiry.

do you have a current focus at the moment?We are doing a lot of outreach work to make parents aware of the changes in Government policy with regard to benefits. New legislation has come in which means that parents claiming income support will be actively encouraged to seek work once their child reaches the age of 8 and they will be switched to job seekers allowance. We can give advice to all parents, on a range of childcare options, rights of working parents and help to work out the financial implications of going back to work. Many people don’t

realise they have certain rights to flexible working hours if their child is under 16 years old and special leave if a child falls ill.

Our advice to parents looking to return to work is – don’t rule anything out. There are many childcare options available including overnight care, term-time care, childcare to fit shift patterns and full-time care. Parents should look at childcare at the same time as looking for work.

The best companies are those that provide support and encouragement without putting pressure on you to reach targets. And that give you extra support in those first few months.n Find out what is involved in hosting a party – everyone feels a little nervous getting up at a party for the first time so make sure what is expected of you is something that you feel comfortable doing.n Research how much time will be involved in each party – some companies need you to make two or three visits to a party host for initial meetings, the party and deliveries. So consider the cost and time involved to see if it is financially viable and practical.n If you’re not sure if a company is right for you, consider having a party yourself so you can see what the consultant is like and how they work. If you still feel it is something you would enjoy you can take it to the next stage.

It’s a long drive, so we stopped over in Yorkshire both ways. En route we stayed in Skipton, a busy market town with a castle. Coming back, we stayed a few days in the charming village of Malham. The surrounding dales are a walker’s paradise and the hike to the top of Malham Cove is an hour's worth of the best walking in England, and all of it on a fi rm path suitable for children of any age. A longer hike from Malham to Gordale Scar via the Cove and back again is a beautiful and breathtaking day out. The Lister Arms pub and Beck Hall B&B are very dog friendly; Beck Hall hands out free walking maps and the pub serves brilliant, good value food by an open fi re.

For the fi rst time this year we decided to take our holidays in england. or rather, the arrival of a new puppy decided for us. We couldn’t face putting her in kennels so it was goodbye cheap deal to Greece and hello…well, we weren’t sure. there seemed so many good places to go, where could we start?

After a bit of research we picked the Lake District. Plenty of walks for the dog and attractions for the kids and a regional tourist board which was only too happy to help us fi nd appropriate accommodation and activities that suited our budget. Perfect.

It’s easy to see why the Lakes are England’s number one tourist destination; we had a great time. So much to do, so many outstanding views and enough space that you’re never far from solitude if you want to escape the dull thud of the kids’ ipods.

The boats were built in the 1930s and although the decks get chilly they have warm, comfy restaurants inside. We say: Brogdale has more varieties of fruit than you could have imagined possible. If you are a gardener, an hour-long orchard tour (£7.00 adults, £3.50 under 16s) will keep you enthralled, but that’s a treat probably best enjoyed when the kids are at school. There’s plenty for children: rare breed pigs (fed on surplus fruit) wallow behind the market place and chickens range freely. The shops have a great range of local foods and crafts, food in the café is delicious and you can pick up something for your garden at the plant centre.

Prices: Parking for the courtyard and café is free. There is a charge for guided tours of the orchard or you can take a self-guided walk (£5 adults, £2.50 under 16s, £12.50 families). There is a charge for special events/festivals.
