Meerkat Reading and Spelling Week 3 – 15.06.20

Thank you for all of your on-going hard work!

Again, please photograph or scan completed work as we would

love to see your learning journey across the week. If you have any questions regarding the activities set, please email

Reading - Activity 1 – Facts and opinions. Fact = a thing that is known or proved to be true. Example:

• Mrs Stokes is a teacher at our school (this is 100% true and cannot be proved to be incorrect.)

Opinion = a view or judgement about something that is not necessarily based on knowledge. Example:

• Salt and vinegar is the best flavour crisp (people might disagree with me on this so because others may have a different favourite, this is an opinion.)

The next 6 slides (last 2 are answers) consist of a text followed by questions for you to answer. You may want to underline facts in one

colour and opinions in another. If you don’t print the work, you may want to make jottings next to the statements by putting F or T to support your

learning.

Spelling – Activity 1 Today I would like you to practise the spellings you

found challenging last week using any of the strategies on the next 3 slides.

(If you got the spellings correct from last week, try the next 20 spellings and see if you need to practise any of

those. This spelling list in on page 12.)

Reading – Activity 2 Task 1

Read ‘The slug’ short story, which can be found on our class webpage.

Task 2 Instead of me writing questions, I would like you to write a minimum of 8 questions about the text. Doing this is a great way to really delve

in and understand a text, as to ask questions you have to have thoroughly read the text!

Here are some question starter examples:

Find and copy 2 words…. How do you think…… What sentence…….

Which words…. What does …..mean?

Task 3

Create an answer sheet for your questions.

Spelling - Activity 2

• For today’s activity you will need a partner.

• The partner will read 3 sentences to you (dictation) and you will need to write the sentence using the correct spellings.

• These 3 sentences are on the next slide.

• If you get any wrong, try spelling them again using the look, say, cover, write, and check method, the have a go method, or even one of the methods from the last spelling lesson.

Dictation sentences

1) Children can be adorable, but they can also be horrible! This is reversible by the use of sensible and enjoyable lessons.

2) The gingerbread house is both edible and breakable. It’s also incredibly delicious.

3) Handwriting needs to be legible so that words are identifiable and it is possible to read it.
