Making HS Count

• High Expectations – Both academic and Behavioral

• GPA – weighted 5.0 GPA. Every class counts towards the GPA

• Credits – Need 140 to graduate

• Transcripts – Everything counts

Making HS Count continued

• Failures – Need to earn 30 credits to attain sophomore status. Must

pass all required class(es) to graduate

• Credit Recovery – Educere is an on-line program. Offered during the

summer and is at your expense.

• Attendance – Must be here on time everyday.

Attendance Codes

• 1 - Absent = School Unexcused

• 1E - Absent State Excused = State Excused (Religious Holiday

and Take your child to work day)

• 1SE - Absent School Excused = Dr. Note, College visit (note

required), Suspension, Funeral, legal matters (court

appearances)

• 1UNJ - Truancy

Attendance/Grading Policy

• For grading purposes, more than 6 unexcused

absences in a semesterized course (a combination

of 1 and 1UNJ Codes) will impact students’ grades.

• Students will receive a “0” for any graded

assignment(s) that are due on the seventh or

subsequent unexcused absence.

– 3 unexcused absences for a marking period course

– 12 unexcused absences for a full year course

Naviance • Naviance is a college and career readiness platform that helps

connect academic achievement to post-secondary goals. It also

allows students to create a plan for their futures by helping them

discover their individual strengths and learning styles and explore

college and career options based on their results.

• All students will be introduced to Naviance in their Advisory class.

• There will be a parent program on Naviance in the winter.

Anti-bullying Law

• Requires that we assign a staff member to be our anti-bullying

specialist:

Mrs. Heidi Roman – Hopkins building (Grade 9)

Mr. Troy Scott – Main building (Grades 10-12)

• The intent of the law is to be proactive to address bullying by

encouraging students and on-lookers to report bullying activity

when it first happens.

• All referrals of bullying will be investigated promptly.

• Consequences and rehabilitative measures and counseling will be

determined as a follow-up to the investigations.

• Training for teachers and informational sessions and activities for

students will be provided throughout the school year.

HIB and School Safety Team

Extra-Curricular Activities

• Philosophy – we want all of our students to get involved in

athletics or activities during their years at the high school.

High school sponsors approximately 30 clubs

High school has approximately 18 athletic teams that

compete over the course of the Fall, Winter and Spring

seasons.

Transition Team

• The purpose of the team is to create a successful experience

and transition for the ninth grade students. The team will review

9th grade data and research, as well as, discuss and recommend

strategies and activities that meet the needs of our ninth grade

students.

• The members of the team include students, staff and parents.

• Meet monthly after school in the Hopkins media center

• First meeting will be on Tuesday, October 13. Subsequent

meetings will beheld on the second Tuesday of each month.

• 9th Grade Community Service Day

• Math support during advisory periods

• Open computer lab during advisory periods

• Media center availability during advisory periods

• Homework Hotline on Tuesdays and Thursdays

• Extra help during advisory periods

• Freshman Study Session prior to Final Exams

Top 5 Tips for Success by class of 2018

1) Do not wait until the last minute to complete long-term

assignments, because the due dates will sneak up on you.

2) Be sure to take good notes in class. They will be very useful

when it comes to preparing for tests and quizzes.

3) Give yourself plenty of time to study for final exams.

4) Get to know some of the upperclassmen. They have many

helpful tips for how to become successful in high school.

5) Try to study a little bit each night. This way you will not have to

study too much before the test.
