born in 1933. He grew up in

New York, where he

lived with his grandparents.

He died in 1987. Mr.

Lobel was 54 years old

when he died.

When Arnold Lobel was young he was sick a lot. He was absent many days in kindergarten, first and second grades. When he came back to school in third grade he drew pictures for his classmates and told them stories. He found this to be a good way to make friends.

He had a wife, named Anita, and two

children, Adam and Adrianne. Anita

was also a wonderful artist.

Some of Mr. Lobel's most popular books are about Frog and Toad. They share walks together and yummy ice cream cones. They swim together and plan surprises for each other. These books teach us a lot about friendship.

Two of his other books won the Caldecott Honor Medal. His own book Frog and Toad are Friends won in 1971 and Hildilid's Night

by Cheli Duran Ryan won in 1972.

Arnold Lobel won the Caldecott Medal for his book Fables in 1981.
