Barrie was born in Easington, in
northeast England, where the film
Billy Elliott was set, and grew
up in one of the most deprived
wards in the country. Thanks togood local schools and a lot of
hard work, he became the first
person in his family to go into
higher education, graduating from
the University of Durham with a
degree in Psychology.
After university Barrie got a job
in London working for
Channel 4, and then
became a writer and
comedian, first moving
to Lewisham in 2001.
Barrie worked for 10
years as a stand up
comedian performing
everywhere from the
Brockley Jack to the
Comedy Store and
beyond. Hes also
written and acted in
many comedy shows
and appeared in
adverts for Kingsmill and Boots.
Barrie is currently appearing in
Channel 4s Balls of Steel, as well
as teaching maths and science in
south London.
I was brought up in a life-long
Labour supporting family, Barrie
says,Im
tired of
seeingLabour
allowing
the gap
between
the rich
and poor
grow.
People
tell me on the doorstep that
theyre fed up with politicians. I
tell them that I am too. Ive had
enough of career politicians who
think that theyve got a job for
life, happily drawing their salary
and expenses while society falls
apart around them. They need to be
booted out, right now.
Ordinary people need to comeforward and take action - the
answer is staring at you in the
mirror. Start with yourself, talk
to your neighbours - get involved!
The biggest secret is that if people
get active in their communities
then they can change the world, the
only way real change ever happens
- from the bottom up.
Barrie is currently a
Lewisham school governor
and feels strongly that the
curriculum should not dumb
down in order to get better
pass rates. When not working
he likes to spend as much
time as possible with his three
small boys, aged from six
months to five years. Having
children makes me realise the
importance of having a good
local school, new playgrounds
and safe streets.
He is also working to help set
up Neighbourhood Watch schemes
locally and has already found
almost ten new streets keen to get
going.

Lets change Lewisham for good in 2010!
Happy New Year!2010 promises to be a year of change a year when you
have a chance to elect a new MP and a new Mayor for our
community
After nearly 40 years of Labour rule in Lewisham so manypeople have told me that they feel let down by Labour,
says Tam Langley, Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate. In
Lewisham its only the Liberal Democrats who can beat
Labour. The Conservatives have given up and are out of
the race. The Liberal Democrats have a record of standing
up for local people, protecting the environment and fighting
crime. Electing a Liberal Democrat MP and Mayor to work
with our Lib Dem councillors will really change Lewisham
for good!
A FRESHSTART
Lewisham
Labourcouncillor runsup 1,300 taxibill
One of the current Labourcouncillors in Crofton Park has
spent 1,300 on taxis in just
one year, enough to get a blacktaxi to Edinburgh. This taxi bill
was then charged to council
taxpayers.
Labour councillors then failed
to publish these expenses on the
council website, despite the councilagreeing to publish all councillors
expenses. After a petition by a local
Lib Dem campaigner Max Cal, the
expenses have now been publishedon the council website, and can be
found at http://bit.ly/56n6R1
Labour councillors have claimed3,400 for taxis in the last year
compared to no claims at all by
Lewishams 17 Liberal Democrat
councillors.
Liberal Democrats do not claim for
taxis because councillors already
get an allowance from the council.
This news comes as Lewisham has
confirmed that in 2010/11 it will
keep the extra 2.5% put on counciltax in 2009/10, on top of increases
in previous years.

Everybodyshould have awarm, weather-proof homewith the basicappliances andfacilities thatmost of us takefor granted. In
other words, adecent home.Labour promisedthat all counciltenants wouldlive in a decenthome by 2010,but today only 3out of 10 homesin Lewisham meet the Governmentsdecent homes standard.
Lewishams Labour Mayor has totally letdown council tenants. The situation is sobad here that the Government has takenaway the 145million earmarked for homeimprovements in the borough and is using
them to build new homes elsewhere in thecountry.
It really is time for a change in Lewisham.A new energetic team is needed to takeover housing, by taking over the council. Ateam that will keep their promises. At theelections in May this year, the only teamthat can beat Labour and change Lewishamfor good are the Liberal Democrats.

PotholesThe recent snow onrun-down roads has
caused hundreds of
local potholes to get
dramatically worse
Local Lib Dem
campaigner Michele
McClarren been reporting
new and worse potholesto Lewisham council.
Michele says Roads
locally were already full
of potholes, before thesnow made them worse.
Potholes are a real
danger, whether the risk
to cyclists or pedestriansof hurting themselves or
drivers damaging their
cars.
If you spot any potholesthat need repairing thenyou can report them to

Trains to Honor Oak cut
Local plants shouldbee more friendly
Tam Langley
has launched a
campaign to force
Lewisham council
to plant bee
friendly plants in
Lewishams parks.
Lewisham could
save thousands
of pounds a year
by planting long lived bee friendly plants ratherthan the short lived plants often put in flower
beds.
You can sign Tams petition here: http://bit.ly/5I7W26
Tam, who has campaigned with Britains top experts
to save bees, says that everyone can play their part,
We can all plant bee friendly plants in our gardens.
Ive planted my garden in purple and yellow plants
like rosemary, yellow jasmine and lavender.
Tam will be sending a guide to bee friendly
planting by email to everyone who signs the
petition or emails her at tam@lewishamlibdems.

Local Liberal Democrats have been
fighting cuts to the Southern trains
service to Honor Oak, Forest Hill
and Brockley.
Southern axed the train service to
Charing Cross in December 2009
with the blessing of the Labour
Government. Now it plans morecuts to the train service to London
Bridge in May, with a cut of one thirdin the number of trains to Honor Oak
Park.
Local Liberal Democrat campaigners
and Greater London Assembly
member Caroline Pidgeon have
been been fighting Southerns cutsto local trains. You can sign their
petition at: campaigns.libdems.org.

Tam Langley says Many local
residents have told me that the trainservice to London Bridge is badly
overcrowded, even without cutting
the number of trains on it.
