While many of my classmates have aspired

to be pharmacists who will contribute to patientcare in various clinicalsettings, I feel morecaptivated by the idea of pursuing a career inpharmaceutics.

Pharmaceutics is adiscipline inpharmaceutical sciencesthat deal with thescience and art of creating the variousdosage forms (i.e.tablets, liniments,injections etc.)

To me, it just felt like anintriguing concept!

The programme is multi-disciplinary

Clinical coursework including: Anatomy,Physiology, Pharmacology,Pharmacotherapy, etc.Practical sessionsexploring: Compounding,Dispensing, Formulation,

Medicinal Chemistry,Microbiology,Biotechnology, AnalyticalChemistry, etc. Work attachmentopportunities

The Department of Pharmacy alsoorganises clinical attachments forstudents during the semester break.Opportunities include:

Retail pharmacy Hospital dispensary Attachments to drug companies,etc.

With such attachments, students canmake more informed choices abouttheir future career path and apply academic principles to real-lifescenarios.

Beyond the courseworks,students can also join theNUS Pharmaceutical Society Activities include: biennialsport meets; sharing sessions with practising pharmacists;field trips to manufacturingplant. There is much to explore andexperience, so do sign upand be an active member!

The NUS Student UnionFreshmen OrientationProject serves as anopportunity for students toget together as acommunity.

As can be seen from themagnitude of the float, theproject took almost a year

from conception to finishand involved studentsacross all 4 years of Pharmacy, all in the spirit of the Pharmily .

A Community service project is spearheaded by Essential Medicines (Emed), a voluntary wing of theNUS Pharmaceutical Society.Participants visit 1-room flats with certifiedpharmacists, helping the residents with sorting their

medications.

Students also get tocontribute back to thesociety during theirschooling years.

Pictured here are various Year 3 & 4students who have

volunteered to helpelderly residents sortthrough theirmedications at home.

Students aid in spotting

medication use errors,such as the continueduse of expiredmedicines, takingduplicate medicines,etc.

From first learningabout the pestle andmortar to tossing themortar board, its been4 years since I joinedNUS Pharmacy.

Somewhere in thefuture Im hoping to work in the Quality

Assurance arena,ensuring the supply of safe, effective andquality pharmaceuticalsto the general public.

While not the mosttraditional route thatmany tread, it seemsextremely rewardingand worthy of strivingtowards.
