Cesar Perez Receives County Award as ‘Outstanding

Senior of the Year’

Guttenberg resident Cesar Perez was awarded the 2019 Hudson County Outstanding Senior of the Year representing Guttenberg at an elegant luncheon in the Liberty House Restaurant in Jersey City on May 15.

Mayor Wayne Zitt nominated Cesar for the award based on his lifetime of service to the community. County Executive Thomas DeGise read from the nomination at the event, saying, “His presence at senior events energizes the group like sunshine,” going on to describe Cesar as “outgoing, loving, caring, and kind.”

Born 76 years ago in Quito, Ecuador, Cesar became a professional dancer in his teens and a dance teacher in his native country. He has lived in Hudson County for 50 years and continues to shine on the dance floor.

“He’s one of the greatest dancers,” confirmed Councilman John Habermann at the awards ceremony. “He can run circles around Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. But more than that, he’s never without a smile. He’s always ready to pitch in, lend a hand, whenever it’s needed.”

Meet Councilman William Hokien

William Hokien has been preparing all his life to be a councilman in Guttenberg. At least, that’s the way it seems, given his

extensive experience in many fields all leading toward and complementing his current position on the town council.

Born in Hackensack, he has lived in Guttenberg for over 15 years in a two-family house he bought on 71st Street. While working in Manhattan, he moved here for the ease of commute, and quickly fell in

love with the town, calling it “a perfect mix of big and small towns.”

“It makes us very different from everybody else,” he noted. “We’re a hidden gem.”

After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, William worked initially as a freelance commercial photographer before pursuing his passion for a career in information technology. Hired by his alma mater, FIT, he has worked in that field for 30 years, progressing from desktop to network engineer, then manager, to his current role as senior project manager for IT, leading major projects including classroom and lab renovations and software deployment.

“My project background is all about communication,” he said. “That’s what I do all day.” And that’s one of the skills he brings to the town council, supporting Mayor Wayne Zitt’s ongoing drive to increase and improve communication among town departments and between the administration and residents.

GETTING INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY“The first thing I did when I moved here was I attended a town meeting,” William recalled. “I’m a very community oriented person. I care about everything around

In this issue you’ll meet William Hokien, one of Guttenberg’s two newest council members along with Juana Malave. Cesar loves living in Guttenberg, calling it “clean, safe, and quiet.” He enjoys the many activities and opportunities that Guttenberg provides to seniors and he can be found at virtually every senior event, spreading good cheer among his neighbors.

“He’s a true gentleman, a great guy. They don’t make them like that anymore,” said Habermann, “One other aside: he’s one of Guttenberg’s most eligible bachelors.”

Cesar received citations from both the Office of the Hudson County Executive and the Senate and General Assembly of the New Jersey State Legislature, as well as an engraved keepsake from Mayor Zitt and the Town of Guttenberg.

Eleven other seniors also received awards at the ceremony; one for each municipality in Hudson County. Eighty-eight-year-old Elva Grace Robinson of Secaucus was honored as Hudson County Senior of the Year.

me.” That led him to bring a list of concerns to meetings, which soon resulted in him joining the Democratic Committee, where he quickly became chairman.

From there, then-Mayor Gerald Drasheff brought William over to the Planning and Zoning Committee, where he served for six years utilizing his project management skills to work on infrastructure improvements, among other things.

In his current role a council member, “Now I oversee the planning department, so it all fits together,” he said. He is also the council liaison for the Building Department, Fire Prevention, and Code Enforcement, where he is focusing on addressing illegal apartments in town, an issue that leads to overcrowding and safety issues.

QUESTIONING EVERYTHINGAmong William’s other past roles in the town are Rent Control Board member, Board of Health chairman, and president of the Board of Education (BOE), all of which help him understand the community’s needs and contribute to his dedication “to preserving Guttenberg’s unique quality of life by continuing to provide valued community services to all, from youth to seniors.”

“I started attending BOE meeting to see what it was about and how it was run,” he said. “I’m in the college environment [at work] so I thought I can actually help. It was a wonderful experience.” It was also a challenge, as he had to come up to speed on local education issues. “I had to go to a lot of seminars quickly. I was bothering the superintendent constantly. I’m very big on questioning. I question everything. That’s the only way you find answers.”

As BOE president, William worked extensively on budget issues, another facet he brings to his role on the town council.

FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE“I never intended to get into politics,” he admits. But being a community-minded person, he realized, “The only way to get things done is to get involved in politics.” So when new Mayor Wayne Zitt asked him to become a councilman, he accepted – after careful consideration. “Could I be helpful, that was the question. For me it was about the residents. And I realized I would get to do so much more good.”

Two of the reasons he joined the council were the strong cooperation between the town council members and the committed leadership of the new, young mayor. “That group, the mayor and council and administrator and lawyer and clerk, they are so amazingly in tune,” he said. “Wayne got everyone to put their thinking caps on, to express themselves. He really brightened things up in town.”

In his first months on the council William spent time observing and learning. He looks forward to becoming even more involved and utilizing his knowledge and experience to ensure the safety and security of town residents, promote increasing economic development, and exercise fiscal accountability.

That entails focusing on development – while at the same time preserving the “small town” characteristics of Guttenberg. “We’re the most densely populated municipality in the country,” he said. “And we’re building all these unbelievably great new buildings.”

In addition, as Guttenberg’s first openly gay councilman, William is working with the Hudson Pride Center in Jersey City to bring LGBTQ activities and services to North Hudson. “They have an amazing amount of community oriented functions,” he said. “For mental health, substance abuse, woman’s care, men’s care. We don’t really have those services here so we’re looking to get a hub in Guttenberg, and to help out North Bergen and West New York. I want to start to reach out to the LGBTQ community.”

With his wide-ranging background in education, health, budget and project management, William is uniquely qualified to advance the cooperation between the town administration, school system, police force, and the various departments that serve the residents and community of Guttenberg. He’s a constant presence at township events, so don’t hesitate to introduce yourself at one of our many activities this summer season.

Diamond Doctor to Hold Ribbon Cutting and

Sale on June 8

In honor of both Father’s Day and Flag Day in June, The Diamond Doctor is holding a celebratory event on Saturday, June 8 and will reduce the price of all jewelry and watches for the remainder of the month.

Kevork “George” Ohannessian opened The Diamond Doctor in Guttenberg after working as a jeweler for 26 years, doing custom work, repairs, and designing original jewelry. Taking over the location from John’s Jewelers, which had been in operation since 1957, George bucked the trend of overseas manufacturing and instead brought his artisanship to Guttenberg.

It was always his dream to own his own store, and Guttenberg offered the perfect community and opportunity. The store at 6815 Park Ave. serves as a showcase for George’s unique jewelry and quality workmanship in creating and repairing jewelry. He also repairs timepieces on the premises.

Mayor Wayne Zitt will cut the ribbon to launch the sale at 3 p.m. on June 8. The public is invited to attend the event and enjoy free snacks and pastries. All jewelry and watches will be reduced by 20% to 50% beginning that day and through the end of the month. Come early for the best selection.

Flag Day Parade to Paint Bergenline Red, White, & Blue on June 14

The 79th annual Flag Day festivities will begin with a parade at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14. The parade kicks off around 79th Street and Bergenline Avenue in North Bergen and proceeds down Bergenline through Guttenberg to Miller Stadium at 58th Street in West New York. Mayor Wayne Zitt and the town council will be marching along with other municipal officials, and invite all residents to come out and attend this patriotic event.

Numerous high school marching bands will perform and there will be vehicles and representatives from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, the Guttenberg Police Department, and many others.

The parade will be followed by a presentation at Miller Stadium and the

ceremonial burning of retired U.S. flags. This event is co-sponsored by the American Legion and the Joint Veteran’s Affairs Committee of West New York, with cooperation of the townships of Guttenberg, North Bergen, and West New York.

Residents with damaged or unserviceable American flags that they would like to retire can bring them during business hours to the Guttenberg DPW at 217 71st St. or to Guttenberg Town Hall at 6808 Park Ave. They are also being collected at the North Bergen DPW at 6100 Tonnelle Ave. and the North Bergen Recreation Center at 6300 Meadowview Ave.

All Guttenberg Recreation participants are encouraged to walk in the parade. For more details contact the Rec Department at 201-868-2315, ex, 162 or [email protected].
