Lightning Ridge Team make State Championship

On Saturday the 23rd of June, 3 local lads journeyed to Tamworth to compete in the Zone 3 Bowling Associa-tion’s Triples Championship. Competing against the best triples teams from 4 other districts, the Lightning Ridge team of Adam Webb Ray Brown and Dave Webb took on all comers and won, in their first game were very con-vincing winners 31 to 11, putting all other teams on no-tice that they meant business. In the final they showed skill and daring to take the lead and extend finally win-ning, to . So now Adam, David and Ray our own Zone 3 Champions go into serious training. With the State Championships in Ettalong on the NSW Central Coast in September. The men from the Ridge will take on the best from 15 other zones, with the best of the best eventually being crowned State Triples Champions. So to David, Ray and Adam a big congratulations, on winning the Zone Championship and on taking Lightning Ridge all the way to the State Titles.

In Addition to our Zone 3 Triples Champions, on Saturday the 30th June our Men’s Fours side compet-ed in the Zone 3 Playoffs. After crushing their opponents Gwydir District in the Semi Final 27 to 17 Our team of Mick Mitchell, Alan Tighe Snr, Alan Tighe Jnr and Phil W Morris, had a tougher time in the final. The Lightning Ridge boys, representing Barwon District went up against the team representing North West District, A Doring, S Berger, J Knight, and T Barett, 4 bowlers from Wee Waa. In an extremely tight tussle which saw the lead change several times, at the final end the boys from Lightning Ridge required a full count of eight to force an extra end, unfortunately this was not to be, finally being defeated 24 to 17. A big congrats to our boys for the way they played and on making a final in such a tough com-petition.

Play the fast-paced BPL format as seen on television ...and win an expenses-

paid trip to the BPL Cup National Finals, played at Queensland's Club Pine Rivers. The BPL Cup National Finals will be played alongside BPL08. Finalists will get to play on the TV rink and meet the stars of the BPL. Over the past five years, Bowls Australia has successfully staged six Bowls Premier League (BPL) events. In 2014, Bowls Austral-ia also launched a new national partici-pation initiative, Jack Attack, which is played at over 190 venues. The BPL Cup marries the two products together to strengthen the correlation between the bowls that viewers see on television and the format of bowls of-fered at Clubs. The BPL Cup provides an opportunity for Club based teams to progress through various rounds to National Finals, to be played in parallel with the BPL08 competition (at Club Pine Riv-ers, Queensland) in mid-November 2018. The format is two-bowl triples and will follow the similar rules as the BPL and Jack Attack competi-tions. Matches consist of two sets of five ends with a one-end tie breaker (if required). Teams can register up to four players but only three players can play at any one time (substitutes during matches are allowed). All players in each team are to be affiliated with the same Club. Teams can enter in more than one event (and with different play-ers from the same Cub). The entry fee is $60 per team (of up to 4 players), collected at the time of entry. PRIZES FOR STATE/TERRITORY WINNERS

For three team members... - Return airfares to Brisbane

- Hire cars provided for transfers

- Four nights' accommodation

- Reserved seats and hospitality for BPL Cup players to watch televised BPL matches

- Free supporter gear for an adopted BPL team

- For the BPL Semi-Finals and Finals, the matches will be played on the TV rink used for the BPL TV matches. These matches will also be live

NAIDOC WEEK 2018

Page 4

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Aus-tralians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Is-lander community.

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Ob-servance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising na-tional activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

NAIDOC Week 2018 will celebrate the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. As pillars of our society, Aborigi-nal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play - active and significant roles at the community, local, state and national levels.

The Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club will be hosting a Flag Raising Ceremony on Sunday 8th July from 10am this will be followed by entertainment and morning tea.

NAIDOC Week celebrations con-tinue on Wednesday 11th July at Spider Brown Oval All Day

Lightning Ridge Local Aboriginal Land Council

The Lightning Ridge Local Abo-riginal Land Council, was estab-lished in the Late 1980’s. The Lightning Ridge Local Aboriginal Land Council, work for their members and the wider Aboriginal community living in the local area. They assist in matters relating to the areas of housing, legal, em-ployment and other day-to-day matters involving Aboriginal peo-ple. LALCs were established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 as the elected representatives for Aboriginal people in NSW. This role extends beyond represen-tation of the interests of Land Council members, to all Aborigi-nal people living in NSW. The network is not, as is widely believed, funded by the taxpayers of NSW. Local Aboriginal Land Councils have been fully self supporting since 1998. Locals are actively encouraged to use the support ser-vice offered by the Lightning
