A CUMC History Minute by Libby Putnam

In the History Room there is a copy of the May 10, 1945 issue of the Kings Mountain Herald with the following headline spread across the front page: V-E DAY PROCLAIMED. Beneath the main headline was the following article. Citizens Overflow Church for Thanksgiving Service “After thrilling immeasurably to the Monday morning radio flash that the German army had surrendered, Kings Mountain settled down to wait for the official announcement proclaiming the long-awaited V-E Day, thrilled again to the words of President Harry S. Truman , and hurried to the Central Methodist and other churches for services of prayer and thanksgiving. The Central church was jammed to overflowing, and crowds from all over the community stood outside to hear the service over the loud speaker." The article goes on to give details of the service. Ministers from different churches spoke and the music was led by Mrs. Charles Williams on the organ, and the Central Methodist church choir. The amplifying system for the church service was furnished and installed by the Western Auto Store. The article also notes that the only disruption in the service was the passing of two trains with loud whistles. On May 29, 2017, we will celebrate Memorial Day. In the tradition of our ancestors at Central United Methodist church, let us remember those who have died in service to our country and say a prayer of thanksgiving for those currently serving in the armed forces.

Volunteers Needed For the McDonald’s Bible Study that meets on Monday nights at 6:00pm.

This is a joint Bible Study with St. Paul and Galilee UMC that meets at the

McDonald’s on York Road. We had 16 children attend the first meeting on May 1st. Please contact Rev. Jill Rhinehart for more information.

A Note from Mallory:

Growing up and working in the Baptist tradition, where

congregational polity reigns, has made me appreciate

churches that operate with a different polity, like the

United Methodist Church. The word united is a word of

great substance. There is no such thing as the United

Baptist Church. The variance among Baptist churches is

substantial and while there is, naturally, a difference

among the cultures and populations of Methodists, the

word united stands firm. That is such a refreshing notion

to someone who has had to explain her Baptist roots

and what kind of Baptist she is and what kind of Baptist

she is not for years.

I feel, as a newly appointed staff member in the United

Methodist Church, that I am a part of something that is

consistent across time and space. Thank you, Central

United Methodist, for welcoming me into your

congregation as a Baptist girl from across the creek in

Shelby. Thank you for welcoming me into your

congregation as one of your own; to listen to and

celebrate your stories, to lead you and your children in

the way of Christ, and to love you when nothing makes

sense and you ask hard questions. In the coming

months, I look forward to welcoming you all into my life

and walking alongside you as your Director of

Children’s Ministry and Christian Education. It is a

privilege to be here, to be united.

A Thank You Note...

We would like to thank everyone at the church for the prayers. It always helps bring comfort to us knowing we have a prayerful church family extending love to others. That type of support meant a lot to Matt and Cassandra.

We would also like to especially thank Ernie and Lisa Howell for everything they did for the family, Teresa Hopper for providing lunch, and Margot Plonk and Eric Hellstrand for their visitation and comfort for Matt and Cassandra.

From the Pastor

"Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can." — John Wesley

When my daughter Kinsey was 2 years old and I was pregnant with my son Nicolas, we knew that it wouldn’t be long before Kinsey needed to start sleeping in a real bed instead of a crib. I studied the books on how to help your child adjust to switching from crib to bed and followed the directions. We broke the crib down and put her mattress on the floor like the book said to do so she wouldn’t fall out of the bed. This would also help her to adjust to sleeping on a regular mattress. As we brought Kinsey into her room she immediately ran over to the mattress and started to

cry, saying; “My bed is broken! My bed is broken!” I was devastated. I thought I must be the worst mother ever. I thought I was helping Kinsey prepare for the future and move through changes in her life but she just wanted things to stay the same. Needless to say, we didn’t put Kinsey’s crib back together but explained to her why her mattress was on the floor and how going from a crib to a regular bed was a good and exciting adventure. (It did take a lot of convincing. She wanted her crib, not the bed.) God made us all very different. Some people look forward to the future and change. Some people neither look toward the future nor in the past but live each day as it unfolds before them. Some people love the experience of the past and dislike things to change. Personally, I see great gifts in each one of these individuals. The people looking toward the future and love to see things change help create the vision of what could be and may become. They tend to be able to see how the future can bring challenges but also great chances for opportunity even if those opportunities are lessons of what not to do. The person that lives in the present, tends to see things as they come. They seem flexible, able to adjust but also grateful for each thing that occurs. They see perspective for the future and the past but also see value in exactly where they are at the moment. Then the person who focuses on the past reminds us of our history and tradition. They help to navigate from previous experiences while remembering the achievements that have already been gained. They help to bring about stability while teaching others the wisdom gained from past experience. This month we have several changes occurring that I am so excited about. Carlos Zamora, Director of Music, will begin working full-time. In addition to Carlos’ normal responsibilities, he will also be starting a children’s and youth choir as well as offering several other musical opportunities for children, youth and adults.

Mallory Brown has started as our new full-time Director of Children’s Ministry and Christian Education. Mallory has already started making plans for our children’s summer activities as well as getting to know some of the children and adults. We will welcome her formally at the Family Fellowship Night Meal on May 10

th at 6:15pm. I hope each of

you will plan to attend to welcome her to Central UMC. This will be a cover dish supper with our children singing as well.

Aaron Simmons has a new title of Director of Youth Ministry and Discipleship. This means that Aaron will continue to work with our youth ministry but also be focusing his time and gifts on discipleship growth and assisting with the Early Service.

The other excitement is our updated children’s playground. I have tested it out personally and absolutely love it. I pray you will as well. I want to thank everyone for your support through prayers, encouragement, and the buying of bricks as well as donations. I want to also thank our Playground Committee who took the time to plan everything out, test drive other playgrounds, and work with the contractors to get it built for us. Thank you all for remembering our past, experiencing our present time, and looking toward our future.

I feel Central UMC is living the words of John Wesley when he stated that a Methodist should; “Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can.”
