2015 Model of Excellence Nominations Announced

A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding7 | 13 | 2015

Newport News Shipbuilding is transitioning to a new computer-aided design (CAD) system called NX, to be used across many NNS programs. The new tool will replace the legacy system CATIA, which has reached its end of life.

“Our company has a strategic vision moving us toward a digital shipbuilding environment,” said Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design. “We have chosen Teamcenter/NX because its capabilities are a cornerstone for this transition.”

In August, the CVN 78 Construction Program will be the first to make the transition, beginning with migration of the Ford 3-D product model from CATIA. Approximately seven terabytes of data will be migrated. More than 80 work methods are being updated, and over 800 people are being trained. The training effort is so large, the shipyard partnered with Thomas Nelson Community College and Old Dominion University to help with basic training.

The long-term process improvements of NX are closely integrated with Teamcenter, which the shipyard started using...

Ford Paint Crew Recognized Newport News Shipbuilding crews are working hard to ready the galley, medical complexes and the hundreds of berthing and work compartments aboard Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), where the crew will soon call home. Recently, a paint crew was recognized by leadership for “selling” their 100th consecutive compartment aboard the aircraft carrier.

“’Selling’ a compartment means that everything in the compartment is complete and is ready to be handed over to the Navy. Once the Navy inspects it, and if they are satisfied and the compartment meets contract requirements, we officially turn it over to them,” said Construction Supervisor Muriel Aiken. “All trades contribute to the completion of compartments, however, this paint crew has had zero paint deficiencies on more than 100 consecutive compartments.”

Foreman Preston White says that the crew is one of the most engaged teams he’s ever worked with. “They strive to hold up company

values of ‘Always Good Ships’ and are always focused on providing the highest quality product to our customer,” he said. “They give 100 percent at all times and are well respected by the customer.”

Currently, more than 60 percent of the total compartments on CVN 78 have been turned over to the Navy.

Congratulations to the “100th Room Sold Crew:” Rebecca Adams, Jesse Artis, Steven Bailey, Andrew Camper, Roland Gatling, Daphne Grant, Carlton Langford, Kenneth Masopust, Rushon Mitchell, Steffhon Ramdeholl, Marry Simmons, Lynda Sweat, Shaun Veal, Raymond Watson, Ivery Wilkins and Mark Fields.

Q&PE Safety Task Team Introduces New Safety InitiativeThe Quality and Process Excellence task team is taking action to recognize safety across the shipyard. The new initiative is to give safety stickers to employees who demonstrate safe work practices. The sticker has the messages “safety first” and “one team” to encourage maintaining a safe work environment through teamwork and looking out for coworkers.

“If you’re doing your job safely, it’s nice to be recognized,” explained Kyle Jaffeux (X67).

The stickers are designed to be placed on hard hats and employees can receive them for a variety reasons whether maintaining safety regularly or for a specific action.

“The stickers create awareness,” said John Grandon (X43), who recently received his first sticker for continuously practicing safe work habits. “If you have one on your hard hat, people ask about it.”

Rusty Spady (O07) also received a safety sticker for verifying safety requirements

regarding office lights. “The safety sticker is another reminder to always go above and beyond expectations to ensure a safe work environment, whether onboard a ship, in a shop, or in an office space,” he said.

Task team members carry the stickers with them throughout the day to recognize employees they see working safely. Employees can receive multiple stickers to collect for their hard hat.

“I like the stickers because they give a sense of accomplishment,” said Helen Gault (O38). “It’s a simple and inexpensive way to encourage people.”

NEW! Publication Clearance Website is LiveFor the first time, employees will now be able to submit materials they intend to present or publish outside the shipyard electronically for review. The new Publication Clearance Request (PCR) website makes it easier and more efficient to have presentations and technical papers reviewed and approved. By creating an online workflow and a single repository for submitted materials, the new PCR system reduces the time spent manually reproducing, printing and routing documents. The PCR system also

saves money by eliminating paper documents that have to be reviewed and stored by multiple departments and reviewers.

Because much of the work performed at Newport News Shipbuilding is classified, sensitive and considered proprietary, NNS Procedure SSO-01-203 requires all employees presenting company information in a public forum to have speeches, PowerPoint presentations, videos and printed materials approved prior to usage.

After submitting the materials online through the new PCR website, requests are automatically sent to a series of reviewers including Legal, Contracts, Research and Development, Security and Communications. Once all reviewers have approved the request, the requestor will receive electronic confirmation that the materials submitted are approved for use in a public forum.

“We’re happy to introduce this cost- and time-saving tool to employees,”

said Manager of Communications Gina Chew-Holman. “Moving from a manual, paper-intensive process to an electronic system will allow employees to focus more on the quality of their presentation and eliminates the need to walk or send paper copies around to multiple departments for review.”

Visit the PCR website on Yardnet. Employees without access to Yardnet, can still submit hardcopy materials along with form NN 146-17.

Congratulations June EPL GraduatesNewly-promoted supervisors and managers are required to attend an Enhancing Personal Leadership (EPL) five-day course once in their new position. Congratulations to the June 2015 EPL class of new supervisors and managers for completing the training.

International Shipbreaking Ltd. has been hired to dismantle the decommissioned aircraft carrier. The Ranger was built at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in the mid-1950s and commissioned in 1957 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. It’s the only vessel of its class to spend its entire career in the Pacific Ocean.

Ranger was also featured in Top Gun, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Flight of the Intruder movies.

In the past, Newport News Shipbuilding has flushed the system onboard a ship to obtain a clean system prior to the testing (“flushing”). This process worked well, but was time consuming, costly and was typically performed at critical times in the build schedule, which potentially impacted key events as the ship matured.

Flushing of the systems is complicated because most systems have areas that are difficult to flush such as crevices, low flow areas, etc. Debris trapped in these areas may cause problems during testing or operation when debris accumulates, flow is reversed, during ship maneuvering (i.e., rolling), during system vibrations, or during non-standard operations (e.g., relief valve lifting).

When looking at ways to reduce costs and build more efficiently, NNS began the “build clean” strategy. This strategy starts at the time the details and components are manufactured and continues through installation, testing and delivery.

Flushing is no longer utilized to obtain cleanliness but to validate cleanliness which saves time, costs and schedule while still delivering a clean, safe system to the customer. NNS’ cleanliness controls are established in the early stages of fabrication and maintained throughout the installation process on piping systems, components, and tanks. It is why building and maintaining cleanliness in accordance with procedures and processes is so important and the responsibility of all shipbuilders. All shipbuilders are encouraged to diligently monitor all aspects of the program and understand what to do when a problem is observed, so immediate mitigation steps can be performed. NNS continues to look for ways to improve the “build clean” strategy as it applies to the various programs.

Meet NX: NNS Rolls Out New Design Software

Newport News Shipbuilding has received several phone calls recently from residents in the areas around the North Yard about trash on the streets and on citizens’ personal property.

NNS would like to remind all shipbuilders to maintain a clean shipyard work environment and to be considerate of the residents in the North Yard vicinity. Deposit trash in the designated trash cans around the shipyard.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
