Valerie Burger, RN, MA, MS, OCN®, is the assistant vice president of the Cancer Service Line at the Monter Cancer Center for the North Shore–Long Island Jewish Health System. This regional role puts Valerie in the com-munity cancer programs affiliated with the health system. Valerie has been an oncology nurse for more than 24 years. She has been an associate editor for

the Oncology Nursing Forum and was secretary of the Long Island Queens chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). As a trainer for the ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy course, Valerie has helped to educate many of the nurses on Long Island. She coauthored the chapter “The Nurse and Documentation” in the book Law for Nurse Leaders: A Comprehensive Reference (Springer, 2011). Valerie holds two master’s degrees from New York University and a postmaster’s certificate in Holistic Nursing from the College of New Rochelle.

They are involved in clinical care and support the mission of CJON, which is to provide practical information necessary to care for patients and their families across the cancer continuum and to develop publication skills in oncology nurses.

She has worked in blood and marrow transplantation for the past 14 years. She was awarded the Josh Gotthiel Bone Marrow Trans-plant Career Enhancement Scholarship in 2003 and has been a reviewer of

potential applicants for the award. She raised money for and completed the Susan G. Komen 60-mile breast cancer walk and has raised money for and participated with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training.

Colleen M. O’Leary, RN, MSN, AOCNS®, is a clinical nurse specialist for head and neck cancer at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Cen-ter Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus. She has presented nationally on a variety of oncology nursing topics, including head and neck cancers, hyper-sensitivity reactions, and venothrombo-embolism. She has authored chapters

in Nursing Management: Principles and Practice on endocrine cancers, septic shock, and hypersensitivity reactions and in A Guide to Oncology Symptom Management on septic shock. She was on the ONS team that developed the first Putting Evidence Into Practice resources on the prevention of infection.
