Dear Educators,
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) call for an
increase in the frequency with which students engage
with informational text.
During elementary school, students are expected to engage
with nonfiction and informational text as often as they engage
with literary text. As students progress, the standards call
for a steady increase of this engagement.
The Scholastic Fact Room is designed to address this significant
shift and help educators meet the demands of the CCSS.
With CCSS Exemplar texts, nonfiction and informational texts
across the content areas, the Scholastic Fact Room is designed
to facilitate whole-class, small-group, book club, paired, and
independent reading.
With easy-to-implement strategies and a broad range of text,
Fact Room will not only help your students meet the demands
of the Common Core State Standards, but surpass them.
Sincerely,
Scholastic Classroom Books

Domain-Specific Vocabulary
How can the Scholastic Fact Room be used in a resource room or library? The books are perfect for a resource
room or school library, adding to the number of
available high-quality informational texts. Since
there are 636 grade-span-specific books in each
Scholastic Fact Room collection, most classroom
teachers will probably prefer to review the title list
and take the books they want for classroom use.
Then teachers can return those books and get a
new group of books to share. What skills will using the books promote? These books are wonderful models
for exploring text structures and text features.
Use think-alouds to help students discover how
problems and solutions, cause-effect relationships,
and sequence are presented, and how authors
present their points of view. Use these books to
deepen communication skills through discussion.
They may also be used to develop students’ writing
and reasoning skills when supplemented with
assignments and projects. How might I use the texts to encourge writing and responding activities? Writing and responding to informational texts
offers opportunities for students to use books for
authentic research and to write about what they
have discovered through their reading. Encourage
students to cite evidence of interesting facts and
details from their reading to support their own
opinions.
Is there an order in using the books?
No! Although Lexile© scores are provided, the order
of use is flexible. Keep in mind how different books
fit in with your curriculum, students’ interests, and
text complexity as you select books for use.
How can the Scholastic Fact Room be used with other ELA programs? Having multiple opportunities to practice and apply
skills to new informational texts will reinforce and
extend learning and reinforce skills and content
taught in any typical ELA programs. How can the texts be use for content-area or ELA research projects? Well-researched projects make use
of multiple resources. The Scholastic Fact Room
contains books that can be used as resources on
important curriculum-related topics. Often there are
several books on a topic for students to read and to
use for comparison.
How can these books be used with struggling readers? Because there are
multiple copies of every title in the Scholastic
Fact Room, struggling readers may be supported
by participating in whole class work, small group
discussions, and partner reading. Further, the visual
text features of the texts offer support—especially
for series books.
How can these books be used with ELLs? Unlike fiction, which often includes details
and dialogue that reflect cultural knowledge
and unfamiliar idioms, the linguistic structure of
most informational texts is more straightforward
and builds on knowledge. This helps ELLs gain
confidence as readers. How can these books be used to offer experiences with complex text as defined by CCSS? For grades 2
and above, Lexile© scores are provided to help you
gauge text complexity. Consider taking a dip-and-
dive approach with more challenging texts—do a
close read on one section rather than tackling a
whole book at once.

The Scholastic Fact Room provides a wealth of reading materials designed to help
your students’ build content-area literacy and grow as readers. You’ll find titles
in each graded text set covering a broad range of topics including social studies,
history, geography, the arts, physical science, life science, earth science, math,
engineering and technology. In these texts, authors share their vast knowledge
and students benefit from engaging with these rich resources. Why Read Informational Text?
Informational text opens the world to students by
providing the opportunity to build strong content
knowledge. These fact-filled texts convey ideas and
information in age-appropriate and accessible formats.
Reading informational text differs from reading
literature in the skills and analysis it requires. According
to the Common Core State Standards, students in
Grades K–5 should be reading 50% informational text
and 50% literature. The Scholastic Fact Room offers a
unique opportunity to help you meet this requirement.
