A WARM WELCOME FROM THE BHASVIC BUZZ EDITORS, ASH AND LOUISE

After years of working his way up to be Assistant Principal at a sixth-form college near Guildford, William Baldwin was ready for a challenge. While attending an Open Evening, he noticed a “buzz about the place”, and was unable to resist the temptation to become the leader of BHASVIC.

He’d been searching for the right college in the right location, and after his first impressions of our liberally-voiced students, he knew he’d found his home.

Brighton is a place he can identify with and also play a ‘twin-swap’ with his identical brother, who lives nearby.

William is eager to preserve what is special about BHASVIC but believes that there’s always room for growth.

Fear not, at a mere 38 years old, William is still in tune with college life.

He’d like to warn you all that it takes time to get into a routine so give it time. “Plan your weeks, so that you manage your gaps in your timetables sensibly, with work and play… don’t worry if you’re finding things hard. But most of all, enjoy it, and have fun.”

We all misread the signs. William’s original plan was to study Film Studies at university, but he ended up doing a Psychology degree, which led to a teaching career, and now he’s stuck with us! There are four key principles that William wants BHASVIC to run by: ‘teaching, relationships, systems and values’. He believes that this will create a contemporary creative learning community to which all colleges should aspire.

This is our chance to have a say in our education. The Student Union are a group of people who represent the diversity of the college. The more clubs and societies we can encourage students to start, the richer we are as a community. William wants people to continue choosing BHASVIC. “And great colleges don’t stand still they keep moving.”

If you see William around campus, stop and say hi. His office door (above the refectory) is always open for those who

need it.

Much like Tabasco sauce or the work of Ricky Gervais, technology works well in small doses. Smartboards, projectors, all the technology that has been in classrooms for some time is perfectly acceptable and good for student’s learning; these methods have been tried and tested.

But now it feels like the education system is desperately cramming wires, chunks of motherboard and anything with the touchscreen through the classroom door simply because they got a discount from the Apple Store. Just because technology is so easily accessed nowadays it doesn't mean we need more.

Many institutions have recently introduced iPads into the classroom – expecting this to cause grade average stats to rise with every Apple endorsement. But it seems the only stat going up because of this decision is Angry Birds sales on the iPad.

Who decided paper was redundant? Or

good ol’ fashion textbooks? Plonk an iPad in front of a teen and they'll never even glance at the worksheet on the desk.

Teens have the attention span of… of a uh… *eyes glide slowly over to Facebook tab* This span is multiplied extensively however when it comes to gadgets. They can stare at them all damn day (or all damn lesson) and are definitely not worth the risk. Or school budget. Spend that on… I don’t know scraping the gum off the bottom of tables.

Well that isn’t really up to me.

All You Need To Know About BREXIT by Rhiann Power

The word Brexit is a shorthand way of saying Britain exiting the European Union. It may be disorientating with everyone around you become experts on British politics overnight. The referendum was held on Thursday 23rd of June, and resulted in more than 30 million people voting (71.8%) and a 52% leave lead. The Brighton and Hove area voted to Remain with 68.6% majority and 31.4%

leave. However, the rest of the country didn’t agree and voted strongly for Brexit by 53.4% to 46.6%, closely similar to Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland backed staying in the EU.

Following the leave vote, Prime Minister David Cameron resigned, with Theresa May taking his place. Like Cameron, May was against leaving the EU but says she will respect the wishes of the people. She stated that ‘Brexit means Brexit’.

The economy has survived the shock of Brexit, although the pound still remains at a 30 year low. Opinion is still divided on the longer term effects of leaving the EU. Major firms such as Easyjet and John Lewis have commented that the slump in sterling has increased their costs. The cost of government borrowing has also increased as a result.

Brexit negotiations could take up to six years according to Former Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond, now Chancellor. The terms of Britain’s exit will have to be agreed by 28 national parliaments. Taking apart 43 years of treaties and agreements covering thousands of subjects won’t be done in a few hours.

No country has ever left the EU, but Greenland held a referendum in 1982 after gaining a degree of self-government and voted by 52% to leave, which it did after negotiations.

The referendum is not legally binding, Parliament still have to pass the laws that will get them out of the 28 nation bloc.

Being a teenager growing up in

Brighton myself, I know the burning desire of a good night out with mates a little too well.

But as laws are getting stricter and clamping down on age restrictions

more and more by the day, less events are open to us youths, making

it a whole lot harder to go out.

Too many times have I stressed the ‘We’ll need an ID’ problem when

hoping to see my favourite band, comedy act or show on stage z- yet there is nothing to fear anymore, as somehow, there’s a LOT happening in the next few months that we can attend…

Whether it’s music, a festival, comedy or a stage show, there’s events in and around Brighton to

enjoy which I’ve picked out for students of all ages in the upcoming months.

You can thank me later.

2016 has been an eventful year for the Chili Peppers; an album release which reached number 2 on the official Billboard Chart, selling over 105,000 records in the first week alone, headlining Reading and Leeds festivals and the announcement of a European Tour.

Number 5: Snow (Hey Oh) (2006)

A classic RHCP track which has a bit of everything; an iconic guitar riff accompanied with a trademark bassline, complemented with Kiedis’ unique vocals and lyrics. Snow’s epic outro contributes to its success which has seen the track named as the Chili Pepper’s fourth most popular song on Spotify, racking up over 130 million streams.

Number 4: Under the Bridge (1991)

Some may be deem fourth place a harsh position for Under the Bridge which is considered by many as RHCP’s best song to date. From the album, Blood Sugar

Sex Magik, which never really took off, this epic track really steals the limelight.

Number 3: Scar Tissue (1999)

Scar Tissue takes the bronze medal. This a song for the guitar-fanatics which boasts an abundance of unique and tranquil guitar riffs and solos. Scar Tissue takes a relatively different approach to other tracks on the album with a more mellow and gentle vibe. A real gem of a record.

Number 2: Otherside (1999)

We’re getting close now. A worthy runner-up which really highlights the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s artistic expertise. This melodious, euphonious number gives the band a real identity - the lyrics show intent and purpose whilst the guitars and drums provide soul and character. Unlucky to miss out on first place.

Number 1: Californication (1999)

The wait is over. Our favourite ever Red Hot Chili Pepper’s song is the masterpiece, Californication. Melodious, edgy vocals coincide with ingenious instrumental prowess to create a song that boosts RHCP’s arsenal of songs ever-further. A heroic track from a heroic band.

The Sun’s

Tirade Review

by Owen Nicholson

In the two years since Tennessee native; Isaiah Rashad released his first project, Cilvia demo , his inactivity fed his addiction and vice versa. During Schoolboy Q’s Oxymoron tour in 2014, he got hooked on a dangerous mixture of Xanax and alcohol, a potion used to numb himself during an ongoing battle with depression. Drug dependency threatened to derail his bright future and almost got him dropped from Top Dawg

Entertainment on a handful of occasions. But this album shows Rashad’s phoenix-like rise from the ashes and embraces a whole array of emotions accompanied by slick, jazz infused production.

Rashad’s vocal range is unwaveringly versatile and can portray focused anger and frustration. This shows a new level of raw, honest anger that Rashad has never really touched on before this

album. His tone can also drastically switch and drift into a melancholic, silky singing voice.

In the track ‘Silkk da Shocka’, about the trials between love and fame, Rashad sings along with Syd and is delicately layered with 17 year old Steve Lacey’s distinct guitar playing style. The production is particularly crisp and the intricate piano sounds blend nicely with the trumpet samples and the laid-back drum loop.

‘The Sun’s Tirade’ not only encompasses Rashad’s musical and lyrical prowess but also the strength of his persona and character. He seems completely invigorated and focused on making up on the lost time from his troubled past. It’s a portrayal of a man in transition. The album is a sonic representation of hope for young people going through addiction, depression and anxiety.

Development and maturity are themes present in both Isaiah Rashad’s lyrics and personal life, and that overlap produced one of the great rehab records in recent times. “Can I sleep for a while? Can I work on myself?” Rashad asks on “Stuck in the Mud.”

The Sun’s Tirade is a moving triumph to facing your demons and coming out on the other side a more complete and self-aware human being.

Five of the Best by Harry Shersby-Wignall

Even now, in 2016, women are still cast in the shadow of the men’s game. The Premier League is commonly shown live on channels such as Sky Sports which rarely show women’s football games live. This shows how women’s football still is yet to gain prime time TV spots where it will attract large audiences.

And due to this, women’s football is yet to averagely attract large number of supporters. This leads to a run on effect where facilities, such as stadiums for example, aren’t as striking as the men’s league.

Although special occasions will see women’s teams play at the same stadia of the men, most games will be played at a stadium which will hold a lower amount of supporters. Surely, if there was equality in the sport then the women’s team would have their own deluxe stadium.

The Chelsea women’s team are playing in England’s highest women’s league, also playing top quality European football, yet they share a ground with Semi-Professional side Staines town who play in the men’s 7th tiered league.

The issue is how little funding they receive compared to the men’s game.

For example, women’s most valuable player in football is Brazilian legend Marta who is estimated to be worth £400,000 whilst the men’s player is Lionel Messi, worth £130,000,000.

Marta even has a higher goal tally than Messi, netting 463 compared to Messi’s 399.

The equality in the recently released virtual game of FIFA finally makes sense as players were rated in comparison to other women and not the men. It seems a small step in the real race for equality in football but the fact that women have been introduced into a popular virtual game this may attract new fans and hopefully this will grow. About time.

An Atmosphere

Like No Other by Jamie Bareham

In the local area around Brighton, sporting talent is in abundance – whether it be the local success stories of current BHASVIC Students Tom Walsh and Lucy Walsh and their respective Squash triumphs, or the overwhelming success of the renowned Brighton and Hove football team, East Sussex sure has sport coursing through its veins. But there’s one area of sport here that’s overlooked by many despite the quality and atmosphere it retains every game: non-league football.

Teams all over East Sussex play for the badge on their shirt week in week out. Take a look at Whitehawk, currently representing our county in the Vanarama National League – only 5 leagues away from the illustrious Premier League.

Playing a mere 18 minute drive from BHASVIC, Whitehawk is easily accessible for anyone and their ticket prices are conceded for students. Lewes and Newhaven are even cheaper at a maximum of £5 per game. Bargain.

Not only is the football being played of a high level, but there are some of the current Premier League players coming through the ranks at teams such as Lewes. Russell Martin, captain of Championship side Norwich City, and

Jason Puncheon, current Premier League star for Crystal Palace, both played for Lewes before joining the Premier League.

There is always an abundance of football on around East Sussex, including one of the teams playing at the highest possible level they can physically achieve – Lewes FC Ladies. They currently play in the Ladies Premier League South, one of the top tiers of Women’s Football, coming up against teams such as Tottenham, West Ham and QPR, showcasing an array of sporting talent for only £3 a game.

Non-League football is growing as a part of the footballing lifestyle. It is where foundations are laid, players are made and careers begin to flourish.

Before BHASVIC was a Sixth Form College, it was a grammar school in the 1950s. Howard Blake, a well-known composer, attended the grammar school.

Blake had a lot of successes throughout is life, but his most successful work is his soundtrack for Channel 4’s film in 1982, The Snowman, including the song ‘Walking in the Air.’ At the age of 77, he is still recognised for his classical pieces including concertos, operas and instrumental work.

Another famous pupil who attended was Adrian Thorne, a former professional football player who was known for scoring five goals for Brighton in their 6-0 win against Watford in the 1957-1958 season, winning Brighton promotion for the first time in history.

He was spotted by Brighton and Hove Albion at just 17 years of age, whilst playing for his school’s Old Boys’ team (in the Sussex County League). In 1954,

he was signed to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Tony Millard, another former pupil, became a football reporter for Sky Sports. He was a “distinguished and versatile broadcaster, enthusiastic administrator and a keen cricketer” as The Argus describes. Tony was also commercial manager for the Albion in the 1980s and the world of Sussex Sport paid tribute to him when he died recently, at the age of 74.

BHASVIC’s pupils’ success continues even to this day. Liam Francis, a well-known dancer who studied at BHASVIC, joined Rambert as an apprentice dancer after performing with ZooNation Dance Company. He has worked extensively in commercial dance, performing in many TV programs, as well as contemporary dance, during his time at the London Studio Centre.

To sum it up, BHASVIC know exactly what they are doing when it comes to excellence and success.

If there are any past pupils that want to keep in touch with the college, get them to follow Bhasvic on Twitter @Bhasvic_Alumni or like the Facebook page ‘BHASVIC Alumni & Parents’.

The i360 by Hannah Cottrell

“The stick in the sky,” “A donut on a

hotdog sausage,” It’s Brighton’s

shiny new toy. But how do people

really feel about it?

The highly anticipated attraction took its

first passengers in the pod on the 4th of

August. Known as the vertical cable car,

visitors climb to a staggering height of

almost 600ft above sea level.

Sponsored by British Airways, the

creators attempted to capture an essence

of Brighton, somehow linking the stick to

our piers. “You can walk on water, now

you can walk on air!” they said.

Planning started for the giant chimney in

2006, and permission was granted by the

Green Party and Brighton Council for its

construction.

The Regency, my favourite little

restaurant on the seafront, was almost fit

to burst with the vast number of people

stepping off the i360 and into their

establishment.

So there are some positives, and one half

of the community is swimming in profits.

But isn’t the other sinking with the lack of

support?

Everywhere you go in Brighton there are

those who are without homes. So where

is the support and funds for them?

According to statistics, Brighton has the

highest heroin addiction rates in the UK,

but is anything being done to tackle that?

Couldn’t we support those who need it

with the money that was spent for the

i360? Why are we catering for tourists but

not Brighton’s own?

Where Are They

Now? by Anusha Patel

Everyone is a little confused

when they first start sixth form.

It can be tough to get into the

right habits and ways of getting

things done. Soon it will be

second nature. This guide will

you get sorted out in the first

few months.

Free Periods

Chances are you’ve spent your

college free periods socialising

and keeping up with friends.

However, you may find that the

work is starting to pile up.

Grabbing a place in the library,

hall or canteen to relax and start

some revision or homework in is

helpful as it means you can do

all your work while you’re at

college and have free time after.

If you can’t find a place to study,

there’s a timetable on the SU

Notice Board with all the free

classrooms and computer rooms

around college.

Clubs

There are a wide range of clubs

to go to at all points in the week.

They might add to your subject,

be focused around a particular

interest of yours or help you

make new friends.

A timetable of all clubs and

societies can be found on the SU

Notice Board in the Copper Café,

right by the food.

Study Skills

One thing I found difficult when

coming to BHASVIC was

adjusting to the new ways of

studying and taking in

information.

Note taking is very handy to do

in lessons and from textbooks.

You may find that you haven’t

been giving your full attention to

the teacher; this is where writing

notes from the board and writing

down key concepts helps. Store

these notes for when you need

to revise them and it will be a

nice kick-starter to your

memory.

Flashcards are good for revising

topics. When summer comes

round and you have completely

forgotten everything but the

teacher’s name, it will be helpful

to go over everything with

flashcards.

Now you have all the skills you

need to survive your first year at

BHASVIC.
