Meeting Jesus This series we will be looking at encounters different people had with Jesus, some who met him 1:1 and had a direct conversation, others heard him teach a crowd; the things he said, and the stories they heard challenged them to make a decision about who He was, these encounters changed their lives forever. Wewanttoshowthecontrastfromlastweek’sNicodemus–moralupstandingJewishleader(insider)tothisweeks,immoral,outcastSamaritanwoman.Theycouldn’tbemoredifferent,yetJesuswelcomesthemboth.Herevealstheyhavethesameheartproblem;botharelookingtosomethingelsetosatisfythem,bothneedJesus,bothareextendedthesamegrace.

Luke7:1-17

Aim

ForthechildrentounderstandthattoknowJesusistohavelife,onlyhecanofferushopeindeath,onlyHecanbeatdeath,becauseonlyHecanbeatsin.Wherethereisdeath,Jesusbringslife.

Wherearewegoing?

WewanttopaintthepictureofJesus’greatpower,andHisgreatheartofcompassion.Jesusreachesouttothewidow,theleastinSocietyinherbrokenness;hehelpsthePowerfulRomanCenturionwhocomestohimincompassionateconcernforhisservant(another“least”).Theworldhasnoanswertodeath,nooneelsecanofferanyhopehere,thereisnohope,exceptinJesus.

These2differentverydifferentcharactersareunitedintheirproblem–theyarepowerlessinthefaceofdeath,TheCenturionwithallhisinfluenceandauthoritycandonothing.Thewidowisastateofutterdesperation,shehasalreadyburiedherhusband,nowshemustburyherson,sheisdestitute.ThecenturionsendsamessagetoJesus,andheresponds.ThewomanismetbyHim,theyarebothbroken,theyarebothgivenlifeinsteadofdeath.

TotheCenturionwhounderstandspower–JesusdemonstratesHispower,hespeaksaword,andhiswordbringslife.Tothegrievingmother,hisheartgoesouttoher,v12,whataverse!!Nowhereelsedoyouseesuchpower,withsuchcompassion.Jesusgiveshercomfort,andagainHiswordbringslife.

JesusDemonstratedhisGreatpowerandhisgreatlovehere,wewantthechildrentounderstandthatJesusraisedthemthere,toprovethatheisthehopeforallwhoarebrokenwithgrief,toallwhofacedeath,heraisesustobewithHim.HeraisedthepeoplethentobewhereHewas,Heraisesallwhodienowtobewithhimwhereheisnow,heaven.ThosewhomeetJesusbyfaithnow,willmeethiminheavenforrealoneday.Wewillswapdeathforlife,thisisahopethatwecanholdontonomatterwhat,ahopethatwillneverdie.

Luketellsuswhatweneedtoknowtosetupthecontrast,SimonisaPharisee,thewomanissinful,v36-37,Simonisthehost,Thewomanisthegatecrasher,hedoesn’teventellushername.Thiswoman,thissinner,approachesJesusasheeatswithajarofperfume,thiswouldbehermosthighlyprizedpossession,thisincensewouldbekeptandusuallyusedtoanointthebodyofalovedonewhentheywereburied.ThisladycomesintothehousewhereJesusiseating,andpoursitallatJesusfeet;shewashesthemwithhertears,andwipesthemwithherhair.Thisisextravagant,self-sacrificiallove,whatothersthinkofherisirrelevant,sheissothankfultoJesusforHisforgivenessthatshepoursallshehasathisfeet.
