Title: NOI – Postsecondary Certificate Law Enforcement
Discussion: Todd Schwartz called for the committee’s thoughts on Postsecondary Certificates. Lena Paxton
asked why this is an issue and Todd’s response was that recent changes in accreditation language has opened
the door for these types of certificates. Terry Patterson brought up that community colleges are different that
4 year institutions. We serve a different demographic of students. Part of our job is to train and educate
people for employment. Chris did mention that students are already doing this within the programs. Lori
pointed out that we also have a responsibility to prepare students for life. These types of certificates may not
be giving them the best shot for success. Mark Sugden commented that this happens in the Health Science
field often. Students take a block of classes to receive a certain type of certification and go on to gain
employment in that particular field. Todd closed by saying he will discuss this with Jeff and he thanked the
committee for their thoughts on the matter.
