Meeting with the FIA Caretakers
Overall Ambitions and Process for a FI Initiative
Why, What, Who, When
6 February 2009
WhyWhy -Strategic FI Initiative
• Moving away from a mere selection of independent projects that have been launched in response to fragmented Work Programme objectives.
• Ensuring a greater degree of effectiveness and impact through greater R&D and industrial coordination
• Responding to the competitiveness and innovation challenges and reflecting economic recovery aspects.
• Building on: – a bottom-up effort, building up on the support of the research
actors (Industry, Academia) – a top-down effort, building up on the commitment, drivers
and interests of policy actors (MS, SDO, EC)
WhatWhat - Two Key Ambitions• To facilitate the creation of a PPP on FI satisfying
the following criteria:– Primarily intended for industrial actors; – Having its focal theme in the short to medium term horizon; – Capitalising on industrial research work ongoing in Europe; – Including a technological focus but with a clear application
dimension that can be further validated/trialled from an innovation/market perspective;
– Relying on public funding
• To prepare the ground for the next Work Programme and FP8– The definition of the next Work Programme (2011-2013); – The preparation of FP8

Role of FIA FIA is the right setting for FI project coordination and for
exchange of positions and views on X-domain matters. FIA is a key and natural interlocutor of the Commission and the
right vehicle for information dissemination and for collecting advice.
FIA will be the privileged interlocutor of the MS Forum on FI and the right setting to discuss global cooperation.
The FIA process initiated in Bled will be maintained and will meet every 6 months (after Prague, Stockholm, Madrid)
Through the preparation of position papers and scenarios FIA makes an important contribution to the definition of the next WP (as well as FP8) as well as to the FI-PPP
The work of FIA is essential in the understanding of the possible/likely different requirements and technological developments and their impacts on architectures and the business models which they serve.
