Report from May: 1. The Community Service/Pride of Workmanship Presentation: was postponed for various reasons;

the NEW DATE is Wednesday 12 August 2015.

2. Mothers Day Plant Sale — sunny day, excellent plants at very fair prices. Profit: $2,600. There are

a number of possible reasons for lower total return. Delay in advertising posters/banners (very bad weather, health and personal difficulties, available space etc.) Clash with Mount Kuring-gai Com-munity Hall protest. However we had a pleasant day and our suppliers were extremely helpful. Berowra Rover Crew assisted in the morning. Susan Hunter’s assistance was greatly appreciated.

3. After 35 continuous years of the Berowra Rotary Art and Craft, having made the decision that the

2014 Art and Craft would be the last, we have now cancelled the booking of the Berowra Community and Cultural Centre for A&C .. a sad end to an era. When can we have the final figures for 2014 A and C Exhibition?

The disposal of the A&C equipment is to be organised soon. 4. Science and Engineering Challenge 28

May Ausgrid, Silverwater. A really enjoyable day with 7

State and Private High Schools. The students were enthusiastic, well behaved and polite and demonstrated a high degree of competency. Next session: 20

July at Masada College, St. Ives.

Helpers are needed. 5. ABC Q&A live production Monday 1

June. Yvonne and Tom Borg, Nola Van Huissteden, Rich

Moore, Frank and Jan Childs attended with Berowra Probus Club and some people from Wahroon-ga. Q&A.was an excellent experience, very well organised. Tom Borg,s question was selected and Tom responded very well A cold night but a warm trip both ways and not too late. (See page 5)

6. Daffodil Day 28

August Berowra Railway Station ….. details later.

7. Fathers Day/Spring Plant Sale — Saturday 5

September at Hunt Reserve. The Hornsby Council

BBQ Trailer has been booked, a $200 Bond was required. 8. District Changeover will be held on Saturday 27

June 2015, Hornsby RSL Club. $50 6.30pm for

7.00pm. Who will be supporting PE Tom and Yvonne and DGE Gina Growden? 9. Andrew Muirhead a past RYLArian has adviced us that he is on the Facilitator team for RYLA next

year. 10. Best Wishes to our members and friends who are having health problems, including Alice

Lovegrove in Hornsby Hospital.

Jennah Bakker will speak to the Club on this project on 22 July 2015. In the meantime she asks that we consider supporting the Trivia Night. - I am a member of the Lower North Shore Rotaract club. Recently along with fellow Rotaractors, I went on an overseas trip to Lao, as part of a RAWS project our Rotaract club started. The aim of the project is to improve the standard of living and implement new renewable technologies into the villag-es of Lao. The REMI (Renewable Energy and New Materials Institute) has been developing new water filters; thermal power; energy efficient wood fired cooking stoves; biofuels; solar power and; other renewable technologies. We are currently raising money to help implement these technologies into rural Lao villages. In order to raise funds for the project we are holding a trivia and movie night. We are holding the trivia and movie night on Saturday the 13

th of June 2015, at 7pm. It will be held at the

Dougherty Community Centre, 7 Victor St Chatswood. There is free parking in Westfield across the road after 6pm. We are asking for $20 per person for a fun night of Trivia, movies and prizes. We would like to have tables of 8 to 10 people, so please bring along some friends for a good night out. Looking forwards to seeing you at our upcoming trivia night. Feel free to contact me for further information. Jennah Bakker Contact number: 0416 566 388

TVET Hospitality Award

The Northern Sydney Institute (part of TAFE), recently conducted its Ryde Campus TVET Graduation and Awards presentation for Tourism, Hospitality and Events. TVET is Tafe-delivered Vocational Education and Training and is designed for people still in school who take on additional studies with a view to getting a jump-start on a career.

For several years our Berowra Rotary has sponsored a special award for the best performed TVET Hospitality student. The award entails the student being recognised with his or her name on a plaque on permanent display at Ryde TAFE along with a monetary award ($250) to assist the student with further education.

The recipient of this year's award was Natalia Dou, a lovely young lady who was described to me as being decidedly the best student in this program.

The Gods were on our side weatherwise, as we anticipated a fun filled day in the Hunter Valley on Sunday 17

May for the Lovedale Long Lunch.

We were a mixed bunch of happy revelers, some Rotarians, family, friends and friends of friends who boarded the bus for a day of fine food, wine and dancing ….. and that was just ON the bus!! Nothing like starting the day eating dolmades, olives, salmon dip and listening to Nola’s jokes!! Stopping for coffee half way throughout the trip is always an adventure especially when the bus driver, aka Tracker Trev, decides to lock me in the bus, using the excuse that he didn’t see me in there …..hmmmm I must have lost a lot of weight in an hour!!! The three wineries we attended were Allandale, Emma’s Cottage and Gartleman and immediately we felt right at home, grabbing every chair we could and settling onto hay stacks drinking and eating some of the Valley’s finest wine and local produce. …. and then there’s the dancing to music from the sixties, seventies, eighties …… I wont go on …you get the picture …sadly, we recognised every song!!

Continued on page 6

Tom, Rich, Frank, Nola, Jan and Yvonne attended a session of Q&A at the ABC Studio in Ultimo and it was an interesting experience. Tom got to ask his question and interact with the Panel.

Lovedale Long Lunch: Hunter Valley Sunday 17 May 2015

Continued from page 5 …… And we wont mention any names but for those guys who announced they never get up to dance because they can’t, suddenly found superhuman strength to get up off their

chair at breakneck speed to dance when a stunning blond in a vivid white crocheted mini-jumpsuit appeared on the dance floor scene!! Seriously that outfit has more holes in it than Oscar Pistorious’ alibi!! Lol!! Needless to say, a good time was had by all as we wined, dined and danced our way through all three wineries this way and no Lovedale event is complete without stopping at The Brewery on the way home ….. for ….. ummm

…. Coffee!! To our bus driver extraordinaire, Trevor, and his very informative (or is that talkative) offsider, Tom, we say a big thank you both for delivering all 18 of us and the bus, back home safe and sound, and by the look of the garbage bin full of leftovers, lolly packets, and wine bottles, we all entered la la land contented and happy!! In the words of a 6 year old I was looking after at school, it echos the thoughts of many a sore head on Monday when he said “I think my brain is broken”! Same time next year methinks. …it’s too good a day to miss!!!
