Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ We're all familiar with the movie "It's A Wonderful Life" which has become a Christmas tradition. From childhood, George Bailey has a dream of leaving Bedford Falls to see the world. Yet every time he's about to leave, someone or something demands his attention, such as his friends, the Depression, World War II, his family. Ultimately, he sacrifices his own needs in order to fulfill the dreams of others. When faced with demands, how we react is crucial. Jesus and his disciples had gone off alone to pray, only to be followed by 5,000 people seeking his blessings and teachings. At the end of the day, how were they to be fed? Imagine 5,000 people dropping in for dinner, and you don't even have enough to feed your own family! How did Jesus react? He simply told his disciples to "give them something to eat." At each Mass and especially today, we are fed by the body and blood of Christ. Through the gift of God's Son, we are fed spiritually through our faith. Through the gifts of his abundance on earth, we have the ability to feed the hungry through nothing more than our generosity. (CCC 2402) We must open our eyes and our hearts to the hundreds of millions of people in the world who hunger, both spiritually and physically.

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: June 10: Deacon Melvin Clark (2004) June 13: Rev. Joseph N. Panavas (1993) June 15: Rev. Joseph Hagemayer (1951) Rev. Louis G. Duray (1966)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE After raising four children and losing one husband, a woman decided to return to college and get the degree she had started but never finished. And so, on her first day of college, eager with anticipation and more than a little nervous, she took a front row seat in her first class in over 40 years, a literature course. The professor told the students that they would be responsible for reading five books over the course of the semester, and that he would provide a list of authors from which they could choose. He ambled over to the lectern, took out his class book, and began "Baker, Black, Brooks, Carter, Cook..." The nervous student was working feverishly to get down all the names, when she felt a tap on her shoulder. The student behind her whispered, "Slow down! He's just taking attendance!"

CORPUS CHRISTI This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi — at least that is the way many of us learned the name of the feast. Today, we generally do not use the Latin phrase. Instead, we call this day the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Many Catholics consider this the “unofficial end of the Easter Season.” After all, if you are not a daily Mass attendee, you have still not been subject to a Mass in Ordinary Time in terms of the prayers of Ordinary Time or the priest wearing green. We have been doing that for a couple of weeks now. However, if you are a weekly Mass attendee, you have seen the priests dressed in white throughout the Easter season and then in red for Pentecost. The Sunday after Pentecost is the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. Again, the color for the Mass is white. Today’s Mass color is white as well. Next Sunday you will see the priests, and the altar, in green. We are so thankful for Jesus’ great gift to us. His Body and Blood give us the nourishment that we need to continue our daily journey to His Kingdom. Even as we journey, we pause for other celebrations along the way. One of the celebrations of significance happens this very day, June 10th, as well: the 50th Anniversary of Diocese of Gary. Many of the faithful will gather with our bishop and several other bishops, as well as with the priests of the diocese, at the Genesis Center in Gary for a special Mass to celebrate our 50 years of existence. Happy Anniversary, Diocese of Gary! As I look ahead, there are so many things looming on the horizon. I will be gone this week with many priests of the Diocese of Gary at Cardinal Stritch Retreat House in Mundelein. Please remember us in your prayers. Next week we celebrate Father’s Day and also host our first parishioner graduation open house. Congratulations to all of our graduates! Our annual Festival will soon be upon us, followed shortly by Vacation Bible School. Before you know it, school will resume again. As fast as time is flying, this is a reminder that, before we know it, the Lord will be calling us home. Are we ready? Or do we have a lot of “last minute work” to accomplish. That is one time when the old phrase — “It is never too late” — will not be true. When He calls, we must be found ready!

GRADUATION PARTY The large tent that we use for our annual parish festival is going to be put up the weekend before our celebration begins. Therefore, we are going to make use of it by INVITING ANY OF OUR PARISH GRADUATES AND THEIR FAMILIES (grade school, high school, college, graduate school) to a graduation “open house” sponsored by your parish on SUNDAY, JUNE 17th AT 3:00 P.M. Food and beverage will be provided, so it is important to us to know ahead of time how many people to expect. Please R.S.V.P. no later than this Tuesday, June 12th by calling the parish office at 836-8610 and giving: 1. The name of the graduate 2. The number of people who will be attending. We hope to see you there.

CONTINUING THE JOURNEY

Some people were sharing life stories last week and one gentleman talked generously of the man who raised him. The man was not his birth father, but he never admitted it. There was a distance between this man and the man he raised. There was a strong bond of love, but it was unspoken. The love was deep but locked away far from the surface. The older man was a good provider. He worked hard and long and he spent spare time in his workshop or garden. He was not a man of words. When the older man died the younger man entered that workshop and had to get rid of all the tools and belongings. In one corner stood a large trunk, padlocked, as it had for as long as the young man could remember. He recalled childhood fantasies about the trunk of how it must be filled with treasures, like gold bars. He opened the trunk with mixed feelings. The trunk held secrets for so long, he was afraid he might be disappointed or shocked to finally see the contents. The bolt cutters slowly cut the lock. Once opened the trunk shared it secrets. It was neatly packed with an old man’s memories. Old pocket watches wrapped in paper telling whom they belonged to. Old pocketknives, trinkets, awards, and papers. In one corner separated from the rest was stacked neatly rubber-banded pictures, report cards, awards, newspaper articles, a complete archive of all the young man did, all there locked up in an old trunk. Love that was locked away for 51 years. The young man guessed that the old man loved him, he never denied him, but he never hugged him and said he loved him. This treasure trove said it but the body of the old man was now cold. I was luckier than this young man. My relation with my dad, although not perfect, was better. He too was from the old school so we did not talk about emotions, or say we loved each other. But until about my age 12 we kissed good night, then it was a manly handshake or hug. Then about my age 50 we learned to kiss again. We did a lot together but most of it was in silence. We never really probed or talked about what really was bothering us, but we were there for each other. On the day he died, the day after Thanksgiving, I stopped to see him before driving home. He and I sat at the kitchen table and we talked for two hours. That was a wonderful gift from our Father to us. When I got back to my house the phone was ringing. Dad had a heart attack. When I got to the hospital he was dead. My dad was gone but I still had those two hours. I thanked both my fathers – God and dad. We all have two fathers. Remember them both next Sunday.

Munster Police Department Child I.D. Program

Several months ago, the Munster Police Department was awarded a grant which enabled them to purchase the equipment and supplies for creating identification cards for children. The card contains the child’s personal information - (name, address, age etc.), a picture of the child and their fingerprint. The parents receive the card and the information is stored at the Munster Police Department in case it is ever needed. The program is run by Sergeant Dan Ball. He was assisted by Officer Gabe Isenblatter and St. Thomas More parishioner, Wendy Depa. Thanks to the Munster Police Department, Sergeant Ball, Officer Isenblatter and Wendy Depa for providing this wonderful service to our school families.

Please note that the Munster Police will be offering this service during the festival. Watch the bulletin for details.
