from the president of from the president of the Hellenic Medical Association for Obesitythe Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Organising Committee of the 14th European Congress on Obesity we have the distinct honour of welcoming you to Athens. Greece, the cradle of Hippocratic Medicine, has the privilege of bidding you welcome. This announcement is the fruit of a common effort by the International Scientific Committee and the Local Organising Committee. We believe that a balanced representation of topics relating to basic sciences and clinical medicine has been achieved. A special interest has been accorded to the relationship between Obesity and the Metabolic Syndrome, specifically the pathogenesis and treatment of these two overlapping clinical conditions. The Congress is complemented by three very interesting satellite meetings (two in Greece and one in Turkey). The European Association for the Study of Obesity is graced by the participation of very prestigious scientists. This, of course, is a signal honour for the Organising Committee, but, on the other hand, it augments our responsibility for the impeccable organisation of a high quality Congress. At this point we consider our duty to thank all the members of the Organising Committee and especially the members of the Executive Board, Dr. Ioannis Kaklamanos and Dr. Efthymios Kapantais, for their untiring, systematic and efficient contribution. We believe that the delegates will have the opportunity of enjoying a high level Congress, but also the city of Athens, which, still basking in its Olympic glory, has been transformed into a centre of culture, peace and joy.

We are looking forward to greeting you in Athens

Prof. Nicholas Katsilambros, President

about HMAOAssociation's profileAssociation's profile

Founded in 1990, the Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity (HMAO) is a non-governmental scientific association, operating on a non-profit basis in Athens, Greece. According to its Memorandum, the HMAO aims to promote "the scientific research and study of obesity and the metabolic diseases in Greece" as well as "the scientific research in the field of healthy nutrition of the contemporary individual".

The HMAO is a member of the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) and the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO). It ranks up to 720 active members from various areas of professional expertise, such as physicians, dietitians and other health professionals.

During the last fourteen years, the HMAO has organised numerous scientific and non-scientific events, consistently aiming at three main national target groups:

Physicians and other professionals who are systematically involved in obesity treatment Governmental institutions working over the formation of public health policy in Greece Greek general public

ActivitiesActivitiesAll the events carried out by the HMAO have been crowned with great scientific and organisational success. The most important events are listed below:

Five Pan-Hellenic Medical Congresses on Obesity organised every other year ñ 4th Pan-Hellenic Medical Congress on Obesity (15-17/2/2001: 900 participants) ñ 5th Pan-Hellenic Medical Congress on Obesity (6-9/2/2003: 1.300 participants)

Three Scientific two-day Symposia organised every other year ñ 2nd Scientific Symposium on Obesity (19-20/4/2002: 1.250 participants) ñ 3rd Scientific Symposium on Obesity (2-3/4/2004: 1.120 participants)

Four Scientific one-day Symposia in major cities of the Greek province with broad participation, organised during autumn 2003

Complex events (including concerts, live performances, exhibitions, lectures) addressed to the public and especially to the children, organised yearly, since October 2000, with huge participation.

Currently, the HMAO is in preparation of two major scientific events: One-day Symposium, in collaboration with the Hellenic Endocrine Society and the Hellenic Diabetologic Association (6/11/2004)

1st Educational Workshop on Obesity entitled "Assessment and Management of Obese Patients" (29-30/10/2004)

In addition, following the initiative taken by the HMAO for the formation of the Balkan Network on Obesity, the 1st Balkan Congress on Obesity was held in Athens, in parallel with the 5th Pan-Hellenic Medical Congress on Obesity, in 2003.

Finally, the HMAO has carried out the "First National Epidemiological Large-scale Survey on the Prevalence of Obesity in the Greek Population" based on a nationwide population sample of 35.386 individuals (17.341 adults and 18.045 children and adolescents). The results and the conclusions of the survey were announced during the 13th European Congress on Obesity (Prague, 26-29/5/2004).

All activities of the HMAO are being announced to the members and other interested parties through the association’s website (www.hmao.gr) and the quarterly newsletter (both available in the Greek language at the moment).

The Parthenon, a monument recognised as the symbol of Greek civilisation worldwide, tops the "sacred rock" of Athens - Acropolis. The Parthenon, a marble temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena, along with the other monuments of the Acropolis, are all excellent pieces of art, reflecting the Classical Period and the Golden Age of ancient Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries BC.

Odeon Herodus AtticusOdeon Herodus AtticusBuilt in 161 AD by Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herodes, the Odeon was dedicated to the memory of his late wife. Furthermore today, it still hosts concerts, theatrical plays and ballets performances. You could either admire its beauty and architecture in the morning or treat yourself with the lifetime experience of attending a concert under the starlighted Athenian sky, caressed by a soft breeze.

Panathinaikon StadiumPanathinaikon StadiumOriginally built in the 4th century BC for the athletic competitions of the Great Panathinaia (ancient Greek festivities), the Panathinaikon Stadium took its final form during its most recent restoration in the end of the 19th century.

Benaki MuseumBenaki MuseumBenaki boasts one of the most extensive collections in Greece covering several periods ranging from the Prehistoric, Ancient and Roman Periods to the Byzantine and the Neo-Hellenic Period. Amongst its particularly interesting collections are those of childhood toys and games, as well as of Chinese and Islamic art.

Museum of Cycladic Art Museum of Cycladic Art Devoted to the study and promotion of ancient Greek art, the Museum of Cycladic Art houses two permanent collections: the Cycladic Collection from the Prehistoric Period of the Cycladic islands (3200-2000 BC) and the Ancient Greek Collection from the 15th century BC to the 4th century AD.

National Archaeological Museum of AthensNational Archaeological Museum of AthensWith its numerous exhibits allows you to monitor the history of Ancient Greek art, which dates back from the Neolithic Period to the Romans. It is the most important archaeological museum in Greece and one of the richest in the world concerning ancient Greek art. Its collections are representative of all the cultures that flourished in Greece.
