Mehndi Tangle Art

Mehndi designs are used in India, Africa, and the Middle East for cen-turies. Combining our modern patterns with the ancient Henna de-signs produces beautiful art. Due to the repetition of strokes, ameditative state can easily be accomplished.

Looking at artwork like shown on the left, it seems very intimidating.Let me show you how to get started.

I used Echolines to create a frame. This is a perfect start to begin aMehndi Tangle.Of course, you can use any other pattern to create a frame.

The same strokes we use in Mindful Drawing are used throughoutMehndi designs.

Let me introduce you to the first pattern:

The same decorative edge can be applied when decorating a spiral, a circle, or heart shape. The basic patternstep-out looks actually like this:

Start by adding a few large commas and decorate them by following the step-outs of Mehndi Spike.

Next, I added a few flowers and circles (examples of Mehndi flowersare shown below).

Any gaps are filled in black.

The big difference to regular tangling is that Mehndi Tangle Art does not use graphite for shading. Little flicks addthe necessary dark portions to flowers.

To finish my Mehndi Tangle, I added more flowers to the emptyspaces and filled the rest with black ink.

Let’s explore a few more patterns.

Again, here is the basic line pattern that can be appliedto any shape!

Mehndi Tooth is a great base to use for flower tangle patterns such as Ukkeflow.

The original Mehndi, a form of body art is wornduring special occasions in Hindu tradition.
