The Basics of Oxy-Fuel Cutting

Q. What is Oxy-Fuel Cutting?

A. Oxy-fuel cutting is a chemical reaction between pure oxygen andsteel to form iron oxide. It can be described as rapid, controlledrusting.

Q. How does it work?

A. Preheat flames are used to raise the surface or edge of the steel to

approximately 1800°F (bright red color). Pure oxygen is thendirected

toward the heated area in a fine, high pressure stream. As thesteel is

oxidized and blown away to form a cavity, the preheat and oxygenstream are moved at constant speed to form a continuous cut.

Hazards associated with Acetylene


Acetylene has a triple bond in it’s chemical structure

This triple bond makes Acetylene inherently a very unstablegas.

Acetylene can’t exist in un-dissolved state even for a while ,hence can not be piped

Because of unstable nature it’s always kept under dissolvedstate in Acetone inside the porous mass.

It’s very sensitive to any kind of shock and shock can triggerthe decomposition of Acetylene which might lead todangerous situations and loss of property and life.

Great care is to be taken while filling, transporting and usageof this Acetylene.

The sludge formed during production of Acetylene poseshigh environmental hazards and very difficult to dispose.

Advantages of NC+ : Safety


Very stable, safe and environment friendly gas

Has ten times lower explosive limits than acetylene henceten times safer than Acetylene.

Non toxic, non injurious and has no torch back fire ordangerous by product.

Less luminous flame hence not harmful to eye sight

Easily detectable in case of leakage due to its uniquepungent smell.

The cylinder pressure of NC+ is 5-6 bars where as thecylinder pressure in acetylene is 17-18 bars

reduce by 12-14times, as a result potential hazard zone reduce

by 12 times as compared to Acetylene.

zone reduce by 6 times.

I gram of Acetylene is equivalent of 3.5 grams of TNT

Piping nc+ transportation thru’ pipeline is safe.

nc+ is stable Gas so, it is safe to use thru’ piping as well as

cylinder.

Transportation thru’ pipeline is not advisable, manufacturers

suggest keeping the Acetylene in a Dissolved state and advise to

use only thru’ cylinder.

Reduces cylinder inventory by Five to six times comparedto acetylene hence less handling

Low slag formation and almost nil backfire tendency

NC+ Cylinder is easier to handle due to its better designand less weight than acetylene.

NC+ can be piped to multiple application point from acentral storage location.

NC+ can easily cut metal of 12 inch and thicker with betterfinish
