When two individuals with exceptional talents gettogether to explore their own sea change/treechange, exciting results occur. Jock, an archi-tect and landscape architect, learned his craftin Melbourne, taking pleasure in hands-onprojects over many years, including the rebuild-ing and running of the luxury 'The Grange' B&B inWilliamstown.
Jo's passion is interior decoration and garden-ing, with many projects in leafy Bayside suburbs. Her natural flair for design has been expressedin both their home and the cottages with a dis-tinct “Hamptons” feel.
From the wall papers to the light fittings anddeep couches, the whole house oozes relaxedluxury and enduring style. As a keen board rider,Jock returned endlessly to the mystical Otwaysto chase that perfect wave and in 2000 stumbledupon one of the most unspoilt places on the coast.Jo, also keen for a rural change, was introducedto the magic of Paradise and instantly fell in lovewith it's beauty and tranquillity.
Ten years later Jo and Jock Williamson have asuperb property, inspired by their love of all thingsnatural and beautiful. They were fortunate thatthey inherited a property with good bones; es-tablished exotic trees, terraced gardens and won-derful views all around. They have designed, builtand decorated two self-contained cottages, usedfor accommodation, which are set over a pictur-esque ornamental lake.
Their own house, recently extended and reno-vated is large and comfortable and makes themost of the north sun and views to the surround-ing forests. It is a rare thing – a home with allmod cons yet one which allows it’s owners closecontact with a truly beautiful part of the worldand where one can gain great respect and admi-ration for nature and the seasons.
Their property, only 10 minutes from ApolloBay along a sealed scenic road, is nestled in oneof the most beautiful valleys in the Otways andis unique in that it offers the lush surrounds ofrainforest and farmland yet is an easy drive tothe ocean – the best of both worlds.
Living in the peaceful surrounds of ParadiseGardens, the decision to move for Jo and Jockwas never an easy one. “We are looking forwardto new building and garden design challenges butleaving one of the most beautiful places inVictoria (and arguably Australia) will be verydifficult”.

■ What ever it is about trains thatattracts people – and it seems the olderthe trains, the more the attraction –Trainworks has struck gold doing itwith the largest rail museum in theSouthern Hemisphere.
And located at Thirlmere aroundjust an hour’s drive southwest ofSydney’s CBD, it attracts 34,000 visi-tors a year.
Its amazing collection includesAustralia’s most-powerful-ever steamlocomotive and by contrast one of ouroldest, our most palatial rail carriageand conversely our most-feared, andseemingly anything in-between.
Visitors are particularly thick on theground on Sundays, which feature old-days steam train rides from ThirlmereStation to the little village of Buxtonand back.
These 50-minutes of nostalgia foroldies are equally an eye-opener forkids, teens and younger adults into theway we travelled, and how we movedeverything from freight and foodstuffsto prisoners and even our dead, inyesteryear.
And several times a year there’seven the chance for the kids to meetThomas the Tank Engine, the Fat Con-troller, Toby and Henry, take a ride ona vintage train pulled by Donald theBlack Engine, or enjoy jumpingcastles, an inflatable slide, face paint-ing, storytelling – and of course pho-tos with Thomas (whose next visit isthe weekend of July 14 and 15.)
■ Take vines that are fifty years oldand a company that’s made Shirazfrom those vines for forty-one con-secutive vintages, and you can bepretty-much assured you’re going toget a very rewarding drop indeed –particularly when priced at an entic-ing $22.
Campbells Wines in Victoria’srelatively cool climate Rutherglenhave just released their 2010 BobbieBurns Shiraz – their 41st – and here’sa wine that’s got plenty of richly vi-brant blood plum and mulberry fruiton the front palate, and tannins andsubtle oak that add structure to the midpalate.
Winemaker Colin Campbell saysthe company aims for the best pos-sible fruit each year, and to followthrough with winemaking techniquesthat enhance that fruit’s naturalflavours. “We have been humbled byBobbie Burns’ continued popularityand relevance among our customersover the past four decades,” he says.
“For many ‘Bobbie’ is a greatfriend, for others a new discovery thatdemonstrates how great modern Aus-tralian Shiraz can be.” And althoughfruit came off vines 50 years old, thevineyard in fact dates back further to1870.
Enjoy this one with filet mignonglazed with balsamic vinegar and redwine.
●●●●● Trainworks Great Hall a steam train lovers paradise.
Opened by rail-buff volunteers asthe NSW Rail Transport Museum in1975, Trainworks is now managed byRailcorp’s Office of Rail Heritage andrun in conjunction with a strong baseof still volunteers of the Rail Trans-port Museum.
And a recent $30m refurbishmentwidened its appeal beyond its tradi-tional base of purely train enthusiasts,to families, schools for educationaloutings, and to social groups and clubsfor fund-raising through a day out witha difference.
Sprawling over 5ha (more than 12acres) the site also embracesThirlmere’s very beginning from the1860s as a tent-town for workers onthe Sydney-Goulburn Great SouthernRailway: there’s still the original rail-way station opened in 1885, the Sta-tion Master’s Cottage built to an Ameri-can design in 1891 that wasThirlmere’s first brick building, andthe Co-Op Shed built around 1908.
But most captivating are the loco-motives, carriages, freight wagonsand railway paraphernalia, with visi-tors able to meander through numer-ous restored historic passenger car-riages to re-live our rail past, or peerthrough their windows into the interi-ors of others too valuable to risk dam-aging.
These latter include the circa-1901Governor-General’s carriage that’sowned by the Powerhouse Museumand housed at Trainworks, and whichis a veritable palace on wheels thatwould cost over $1m to replace to-day.
By contrast there’s the last of justfour-ever prison vans used to trans-port inmates between prisons aroundthe state from 1915 to 1975, an aus-tere, barred compartment with bare-board seating for 14 male prisonerswith a toilet at one end, a room forfive warders in the middle, and com-partment for eight female prisonerswith toilet at the other end.
There’s also an interesting Trav-elling Post Office once used for sort-ing mail on-the-move to country cen-tres, an unusual little Rail Pay Buswhose bus body was adapted to travelon rail to deliver rail workers’ wages, steam locomotive E18 that was builtin 1866 and served a near-100 years,a display explaining how signals andpoints work – and a funeral cart onwhich coffins were delivered to one-time funeral trains.
Other restored or partly-restoredcarriages include old Sydney subur-ban electrics, the 3-car Broken HillSilver City Comet, sleeping, diningand lounge cars from the one-time all-First Class Sydney to MelbourneSouthern Aurora, once steam-hauledcountry passenger train carriages, buffet cars – and a so-called ‘dog box’lavatory car.
Amongst goods wagons are anoriginal Arnotts Biscuits van, Shelltanker, grain and coal hoppers, a railhorse box and a guard’s van.
And for those whose love is loco-motives there are seventeen on staticdisplay including Australia’s oncemost-powerful steam loco, the 260tonne Garratt, six various class op-erational steam locos, while the fa-mous 3801 fast express loco can beseen in overhaul in the Roundhouseworkshops
The Roundhouse also has a 33mturntable that can swing locos ontoseven different tracks and is one ofonly three of its magnitude in NSW.
