The Past: Nursing evolvement in Oman
Derived from our Islamic faith (Al Osimy,
2004)
Founded by Rufaida Al-Aslamiya (Zakai,
2011)
Oman nursing takes root from the early
1900s “American Missionary
Association”
1930’s and 40’s, Al-Rahma Hospital and
2 other hospitals were established

The Past: Nursing evolvement in Oman
In 1959, 10 health centers and 12 dispensaries
(Sohar, Ibra, Nizwa, Seeb and Rustaq)
1970, AMA started a formal 2 year nursing
program for 5 male medical orderlies within
Matrah Hospital (Named Al-Rahma School of
Nursing)

The Past: The Nursing evolvement in Oman
• In 1979, establishment of Directorate of Nursing
• In 1994, Oman was co-opted as a member in GCC
Nursing Technical Committee
• In 1999, the first group to Villanova University
• In 2001, OSNI was opened and ONMC was established
• SQU started nursing education program in 2002
• In 2004, Nizwa University started a nursing education
program

The Future: to view the vision for the future
Key figure nursing professionals were interviewed then
2 heterogeneous focus groups surveyed was conducted in
2012, with the following findings:
– The nursing future is bright and promising.
– Inspired by the past, developed in the present.
– Nurses are not facing the future in isolation of other
health care professions

The Future: Leadership and Management
Omani nursing leaders should be prepared to face the future
challenges.
Leaders should develop a clear performance management model
Formal education for Nursing Administration ought to be at Master
level.
A few Omani nursing leaders may also be prepared in business
management, research, law or ethics.

Nursing shortages are mainly in specialist areas.
Entry level to the profession must be at BSc.
The projection of the future needs should take into
consideration:
– The projected connection between supply and demand,
– Planning and distribution to ensure the skill mix is fulfilling
the customers needs (in hospital and community).
