Arts and culture are not forgotten, with Moomba Festival bringing the city together, and another impressive world-first exhibition taking up residence at the Melbourne Museum. WW1 Centenary Exhibition explores the tales from the frontline like never before.

Finish off the season with a spot of drama as you take in one (or two) of the many great shows that are lighting up the stage. yle Hub Highlights

Artisan bread will be the rising star of the festival’s pop-up hub this year at the Festival Artisan Bakery and Bar. The blank canvas of Queensbridge Square will be transformed for the fourth year with a working bakery, workshop space, plus a wine, beer and coffee bar spreading the tempting aromas of freshly baked bread into the heart of Melbourne from day to night. In addition to a daily program of Australia’s most celebrated bakers, two international guests will share their skills with Melbourne: Justin Gellatly from state-of-the-art bakery and baking school Bread Ahead in London, and Éric Kayser, a fourth-generation master baker from Paris with more than 80 Maison Kayser locations worldwide.

Horses and CoursesTake nine servings of the season’s hottest thoroughbred racetrack action, mix with Victoria’s very best boutique wineries, breweries and producers, and finish with a liberal sprinkling of some of Melbourne’s foremost food and wine luminaries. Returning in 2015, the Victoria Racing Club and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival will serve up the hottest dish in town, the Flemington Grazing Trail & Cellar Door at Flemington’s Super Saturday (14 March).

My MelbourneFunny man Tommy Little, who you might recognise from such TV shows as The Project and A League Of Their Own, is back on stage this season for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Since his debut at the festival in 2009, and being dubbed ‘the future of funny’, Tommy has become a firm favourite on Melbourne’s comedy scene. So much so he’s branched out, taking on the small screen – where he’s also flexed his acting muscles on It’s A Date and Time Of Our Lives – and radio, where he hosts Nova Breakfast with Meshel Laurie. Last year, tickets to his Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Middleclass Gangster sold out, so it ’s not surprising he’s making a return in March and April, this time with his new show Enter the Weapon.

Tell us a bit about how you’ve come to be where you are today. How did you get started as a comedian? It all started with my mum and dad doing something unspeakable behind a shed at a B&S ball in a town called Bunyip in country Victoria. Since then it ’s been an equally glamorous series of failures that have led me to the only job from which I am yet to be fired: comedian.

What can we expect from your show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year?A feast for all the senses! Flavours and spices from around the world will combine to create a taste sensation in Melbourne.*

Who are some of the must-sees you’ll be checking out during the festival?I’ve heard rumours that my show will be so good I plan on checking it out every night. Apart from that, you should go to see Nazeem Hussain and Nick Cody. Nazeem is hilarious and Nick needs the money.

What are your favourite pre- and post-show haunts in Melbourne? My days of drinking before shows are long behind me. During the festival, Cabinet Bar in Rainbow Alley is a great little place for a civilised sip. After that head to Gin Palace in Russell Place for late-night shenanigans.

*OK, so that is actually a description from a local food festival, but don’t worry because my show will be just like that, except with jokes.

For more information on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and to buy tickets, visit comedyfestival.com.au

Tommy’s Melbourne favourites…Café: Alimentari on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. It ’s great people-watching.

Restaurant: Shanghai Dumpling House on Tattersalls Lane. You can get fed and yelled at by the wait staff for less than 10 bucks. Bargain!

Event: The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, of course. The best comedians from all around the world travel to our little city with the sole purpose of trying to make us laugh.

From stand-up comedy to blooming buds and historical war artefacts, arts and culture in Melbourne has something for everyone.

Laughing Out LoudLaughter rings out across Melbourne with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (25 March–19 April) bringing a month of non-stop amusement and hilarity to the city.

From the musical and controversial to classic punchlines and knock-knocks, prepare for side-splitting jokes from international headliners, local legends and newcomers with gigs, shows and performances happening at venues large and small. Catch a lunch-time laugh at a matinee show or stay up late with bawdy tales and crass crack-ups. No matter when or who you see, you are in for a giggle.

Flower PowerTest out your green thumb and discover the secret to a backyard oasis at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show (25–29 March). The World Heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens explode into a haven of colour for a festival of floral frivolity.

After 19 years as the biggest annual flower and garden show in the southern hemisphere, the festival is the destination for garden lovers and those looking for a little green inspiration.

See arrangements from Australia’s top floral and landscape designers, browse through an extensive array of garden and floral retail products and rare and unusual plants, all while enjoying great food and live entertainment for the whole family across the five days.

Street StyleForget fashion faux pas and get your stylish threads on, since there is no slacking when it comes to fashion in Melbourne. Launch into a world of accessorising, coordination and colour blocking as you explore the boutiques that fill their window displays with designer wares. From the exclusive brands on the top end of Little Collins Street (1) and Flinders Lane (2) to the rare, vintage and sometimes bizarre of Degraves Street (3) and the Royal Arcade (4), fashion is at home in the city ’s laneways.

royalarcade.com.au

Laneways, alleyways and side streets defy stereotypes in Melbourne as they are home to some of the city’s best shopping, dining and, of course, art.

Vibrant VisualsLight installations, suspended sculptures and miniature galleries continue to surprise and amaze visitors as they wander the colourful laneways and uncover this exciting and unique side to Melbourne. Since 2001, Melbourne has commissioned local and international artists to create stunning temporary displays on sites across the city. Take a turn off one of the major streets and you could discover the much discussed and photographed works. The famously named AC/DC Lane (6), Manchester Lane (7), Hoiser Lane (8) and Union Lane (9) all host ever-changing, vibrant patchworks of exciting artwork that will have you mesmerised.
