Artisan bread will be the rising star of the festival’s pop-up hub this year at the Festival Artisan Bakery and Bar. The blank canvas of Queensbridge Square will be transformed for the fourth year with a working bakery, workshop space, plus a wine, beer and coffee bar spreading the tempting aromas of freshly baked bread into the heart of Melbourne from day to night. My MelbourneFunny man Tommy Little, who you might recognise from such TV shows as The Project and A League Of Their Own, is back on stage this season for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Since his debut at the festival in 2009, and being dubbed ‘the future of funny’, Tommy has become a firm favourite on Melbourne’s comedy scene. So much so he’s branched out, taking on the small screen – where he’s also flexed his acting muscles on It’s A Date and Time Of Our Lives – and radio, where he hosts Nova Breakfast with Meshel Laurie. Last year, tickets to his Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Middleclass Gangster sold out, so it ’s not surprising he’s making a return in March and April, this time with his new show Enter the Weapon.

Tell us a bit about how you’ve come to be where you are today. How did you get started as a comedian?It all started with my mum and dad doing something unspeakable behind a shed at a B&S ball in a town called Bunyip in country Victoria. Since then it ’s been an equally glamorous series of failures that have led me to the only job from which I am yet to be fired: comedian.

What can we expect from your show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year?A feast for all the senses! Flavours and spices from around the world will combine to create a taste sensation in Melbourne.*

Who are some of the must-sees you’ll be checking out during the festival?I’ve heard rumours that my show will be so good I plan on checking it out every night. Apart from that, you should go to see Nazeem Hussain and Nick Cody. Nazeem is hilarious and Nick needs the money.

What are your favourite pre- and post-show haunts in Melbourne?My days of drinking before shows are long behind me. During the festival, Cabinet Bar in Rainbow Alley is a great little place for a civilised sip. After that head to Gin Palace in Russell Place for late-night shenanigans.

*OK, so that is actually a description from a local food festival, but don’t worry because my show will be just like that, except with jokes.
