In May 2013 citywide Churches, Christian organisations and Christians in the Marketplace are delighted to bring Dr David Yonggi Cho and Dr Young Hoon Lee to Melbourne for the River of Life Conference. Dr Lee is the successor of Dr Cho as Senior Pastor of Yoido Church, Seoul. Dr Cho is one of the most significant Christian leaders of our life time. He has been used by God to inspire extraordinary spiritual and numerical growth in Korea, Australia and around the world. His teachings, instigation of cell groups, conferences and Prayer Mountain have had global impact. The Yoido church that Dr Cho founded and served for 50 years has grown to a membership of some 800,000. Dr Cho is currently Emeritus Pastor of Yoido church. Today the Australian church is immersed in a world that is experiencing massive social, technological, economic, military and environmental changes and uncertainty. During similar times of uncertainty in South Korea Dr Cho started from very humble beginnings and together with other Christian leaders helped to grow the Christian population of South Korea at around 9% per annum from less than 1% to the current figure of over 30% of the population. Many people can teach principles of leadership but what we need is growth in faith. Dr Cho has raised the faith of the church during previous visits to Australia. This conference will add an extra dimension to our faith community as we learn, celebrate, worship and grow in capacity to live out our Christian faith in our everyday world.

Conference Background

The vision for this conference originated with Radmila Zivanovic in the course of her calling over

many years. Radmila is an ordained minister and has travelled to 26 countries in mission. Since 1994

she has travelled seven times to the Yoido church and Conferences and on one occasion met with Dr

Cho personally. She has been deeply impacted by the humility, teaching and prayer of Dr Cho.

From the outset this conference has been seen as an outworking of unity across the wider Church to

achieve together what can’t be achieved individually. To this end Peter Kentley was invited to take up

the role of project convener. From this initiative the listed leaders we are very pleased to welcome Dr

Cho and Dr Lee to Melbourne. Click here for a short video that introduces on Drs Cho and Lee.

Please note that this conference is a collaborative expression of the citywide church. The style of conference will be respectfully cross-denominational and there is no agenda to start a Dr Cho ministry in Australia.

River of Life Vision from the Scriptures

The River of Life flows through the Bible from beginning to end. It starts at the Garden of Eden and

emerges at the rock struck by Moses in the wilderness and in Psalm 46:4 –

There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High (NKJV).

The river emerges again in the vision of Ezekiel 47 and flows on through the prophets at Amos 5:24

and Zech 9:10. The river continues through the Gospels at John 4:10-14 and 7:37-39 and on through

the teaching of St Paul at 1 Cor 10:2-4. Finally the river reaches its final destination at Rev 22:1-4.

Accordingly the River of Life Conference derives its theme from the vision in Ezekiel 47 and the

promise of Jesus at John 7:37. It reaches its final purpose at Rev 22:1-2.

To experience this vision we need to start at the headwaters. In Ezekiel 47 and Psalm 46:4 we find an

altar at the headwaters where God dwells at the mercy seat. It’s here that we are invited to come to

the only safe place where we can lay down our pride, our independent, self-centred and self-

justifying attitudes. The alter points to the Cross where we can engage with God in the humility that

invites His presence. In this way we hear Jesus: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them”.

From this place our respective trickles of water from our innermost being progressively merge to

form a river that starts ankle-deep then becomes knee-deep, then up to the waist and then become

a mighty river that cannot be crossed. This mighty river flows into the Dead Sea where the salty

water becomes fresh so that swarms of living creatures can emerge. The tree of life is found beside

the river in both Ezekiel and Revelation:

“Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor

will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary

flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing” (Ezek 47:12).

This conference is about the gathered and scattered church becoming a mighty river flowing with

unity and purpose into the Dead Sea which represents our world in need of knowing Jesus.

5. to raise trust in the wider church as we share some of the great stories of how the Christian community is loving and caring for our city and nation today.

6. To raise the mission of the church through the relationships that is part of the sphere of influence of every follower of Jesus.
