Commodore’s Log

One knows that hurricane season and horrible heat is sliding behind us when rum racing finishes in the dark!! That certainly was the case Fri. Oct.8th. The fall season is here. Our club calendar is packed with a lot of activities. And it is our NEW club calendar

format which is more informative and more user friendly. Find it on the MYC site.

Besides regattas, clean up work parties, TGIF the fall season opens our next year planning phase. The mem-bership elected Scott Bell, Nancy Fox, Amy Lacy, Jacki Leahy and Matt Salatino as nominating committee for presenting a slate of officers for next year. Their job is an important one. Please consider being part of the club management team, it is a rewarding (don’t read $$) experience and a lot of fun. Let your interest be known to this committee if you are willing and interested in serving. Also, if you have ideas about others serv-ing, provide your input to the committee.

The Long Range Planning Committee has been very active recently and is working closely with the Board. Topics include developing a long range financial planning tool, small boat fleet purchase, and the parking di-lemma. The committee would welcome your inputs on these topics and suggestions for others.

You will read this amidst the Fall Regatta. Hopefully, you are involved. If you missed out this year be sure to jump in next year. There is always room for you in the Wine-n-Cheese Fleet. Thanks to all who work these re-gatta weekends.

Club operations are in good shape. Our Treasurer is satisfied that we are staying within budget and has cre-ated separate reserve accounts as our By Laws require. Fortunately we have not had any big ticket surprise maintenance needs. There is a need to re-do the air conditioning for the outside heads as well as improve the air conditioning for the inside heads. House is working this issue and perhaps will have modifications done in October. If my outboard motor ran as smoothly as the club is running, I would be happy.

See you at the club,

Jim Henry/Commodore

5th Annual MYC

Blood Drive Melbourne Yacht Club will

be sponsoring a blood drive on Saturday,

December 11, 2010.

The Big Red Bus will be in the upper parking lot from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Please come and give the gift of life.

House The last several weeks have been rather busy around our Club, all in a positive way. As I have

mentioned earlier, I have been addressing the quandary we have as it relates to the lack of air conditioning in the Clubhouse outside restrooms. I have had several commercial air conditioning contractors in to access the situation and offer their opinions. From there we have settled upon a solution and obtained three good proposals to right this wrong. This was presented to the full House Committee and Commodore Henry for discussion and a recommendation to the Board.

A broader scope of work to include addressing the inside restrooms as well was discussed and agreed upon and I am in the middle of value engineering this with the two best contractors we were work-ing with. The initial proposals are just coming in and though I had hoped to have something more definitive to report at this writing, this is not yet the case. I will convene another House meeting soon to discuss these pro-posals and have a solution to take to the Board for action.

We recently completed our annual Fall work day. Over 25 members showed up to help and a tremendous amount of work was accomplished. Amy Lacy and her incredible Landscaping team set about the Club and did a great job. I will let her get more into that but I can say I was proud of the volunteers and their unselfishness to help make our Club look even better.

The next day we had a tree trimming company come out and really do a lot of trimming on the east side of the Club and all around the outside deck area which really expands our view and cleans things up. As such, I am happy to report that the overall condition of the MYC grounds and Clubhouse is a very bright GREEN.

October is here and it's a very active time around MYC in several capacities. The Clubhouse has several member reservations booked as well as the Fall Regatta Week. As always should you have any suggestions or comments relating to our Club from a House standpoint, let me know.

Fair Winds!

Patrick Lambert/Vice Commodore

Fleet Fall racing season is roaring along. The Mermaid Regatta found 90 ladies on the water, with two days of spirited close racing under clear skies, and just a tiny hint of Florida fall in the air. In the spinnaker fleet, the overall winner was Rochelle Yates and the crew of Mouse, fol-lowed by Linda Tillman, making her return to the J-24 with the crew of The Other Half, and then Amy Lacy with the crew of Purr-fect Ladies sailing Magic. In the non-spinnaker fleet, Rachele Ross was first in Sleighride, followed by Rhonda Delmater in Rendezvous. The large Margarita fleet had a rollicking good time, complete with costumes, flags and burgees, and lots of support from Commodore Jim Henry.

The Opti fleet was active again on September 26th, traveling to Ft. Pierce for the Treasure Coast Youth Sailing Foundation Regatta where JJ Johnson and Christofer Williams both had solid performances. We wish them well in the upcoming MYC Small Boat Regatta, as well as Ryan Williams and George Dyer, who will all be sailing for the home club. It’s looking like we are going to have a very large Opti-Green fleet at the Small Boat, so if you’re not sailing, come up to Ballard Park and watch the fun.

The Big Boat Regatta will be sailed north of the Eau Gallie Causeway this year to offer us a larger sailing area and to allow more fleet starts. Because of this, check the NORs, because some of our traditional starting times have been changed to allow for transit time.

I would like to thank everyone for all the assistance in preparing for the fall racing season, especially Rachele Ross, who pulled together another fantastic Mermaid Regatta.

See you on the water,

Jack Clark / Fleet Captain

The Spectator Boat continues to be a hit on the Rum Races. Since the beginning of September, we have had gracious members who have volunteered their boats to take out members, prospective members and friends to enjoy an evening cruise on the Indian River while watching the Rum Racers round the marks.

Having enjoyed food wine and friendship, participants have informed me that they would do it again! The volunteer Spectator Boat is listed on the whiteboard in the bar on the day of the Rum Race, and the boat leaves the dock at 6:00pm. If you have not tried it out, you are in for a treat!

Thanks to Larry Etheridge on Purr-fect, and Gabe and Pat Denes on Sirveyor, for volunteering as Spectator Boats this past month.

The remaining Rum Races of the year are on:

Friday October 22, Friday November 5.

Sunday, November 14, Sunday November 28.

Sunday December 12, Sunday December 26.

(Sundays the boat leaves at 2pm.)

If you would like to volunteer for any of these dates, please email

[email protected] or call Karen Williams to sign up.

Entertainment October is an important month for MYC, with the end to the heat of summer, the return of our wandering members, and, of course, the Fall Regatta racing season. It’s great to see the party atmosphere of September’s Mermaid Regatta spill over into large turnouts for rum races and bar events.

Soon, however, November will be here, and members will be thinking of family and friends with Thanksgiving, and the upcoming Holiday season. It’s a time of giving and reaching out and partying and connecting with those we love. So, be sure to plan ahead, plan to participate, and plan to help!

October 29th (Friday) – Halloween drinks at the bar.

November 1st (Monday) – Overnight Cruise to Titusville to see one of the last shuttle launches. Contact Karen Williams, Page Proffitt, or Ross Herbert.

November 18th (Thursday) – Soggy Paws Travelogue Night

November 25th (Thursday) – Orphan’s Thanksgiving—Hosted by Jacki Leahy. $5/Person, See bar flyer.

December 18th (Saturday) – Grand Canal Boat Parade

Bar The bar and kitchen have been doing well this past month and we plan to put them

to more use as the month rolls on. With the Fall Regattas coming up please show your support and volunteer when you see the need in the kitchen and around the club. Big Boat Regatta will need about 10 to 15 people helping with dinner. While you are at the club please look on the bar and sign up to help out.

We have a few boats interested in sailing the 31 miles up to Titusville on Monday, November 1st for the 4:40 PM launch of one of the last shuttle launches. If you would be interested cruising up email me at [email protected] so I can keep everyone updated.

Membership The year is moving along swiftly. It is October Homecoming season and MYC has it's own

Homecoming to celebrate.

I would like to Welcome Home our newest MYC members.

Susan Jackson, Rick Smith, Rob Bernard, all Resident. And Neal Weintraub, Corinthian.

We look forward to spending more time with you all.

Speaking of spending time with friends, I would like to send out a special cheer to a couple of members who really made a difference for all the ladies at the Mermaid Regatta.

Rachelle Ross, your Mermaid Regattas are always a must attend event here at the club. After 32 of them, this one was again, phenomenal! Can't wait until next year's!

Diane Gabik did some specialty recruiting this year. Her mission: to get all MYC women on the water for the Mermaid Regatta. Now I have not counted the total number of female MYC members, but I think she may have come very close to her goal. We had over 90 women on the water!! Wow! The Margarita division increased in numbers and word around the club is that some ladies may have switched over permanently to the dark, er, fun side!! Way to go Diane!

Two MYC members are significantly involved with boats nomi-nated for the Sailing World Boat of the Year Awards.

The Raider II, designed by John Drawe, and the J-111, engineered by John Fox have both received nominations. The winners will be announced in the January/February issue of Sailing World.

Congratulations to you John Drawe and John Fox. We are proud of you both.

Dockmaster Fall has arrived! We now have a chance of completing a few dock projects and en-

joying the cooler weather as we do so. Projects contemplated include the fabrication of three new aluminum dock carts; replacement or repair of the floating work platform; yet another check of the dock electrical receptacles; and, some leveling of the dock struc-ture.

Hopefully, we will be able to organize a work party in early November to accomplish some of the above projects. As always, if you see something on the docks or your finger pier that needs repair, please call or send me an email.

A few reminders regarding proof of insurance were recently sent out; dock renters, please remem-ber to put a copy of your insurance Declarations Page in the Dockmaster’s box or submit it by eMail when you renew your boat insurance

May all the hurricanes continue to be “fish storms.” See you on the docks.

Grant Ball /Dockmaster

Sailing Education Thanks to everyone that has used the club’s small boats recently and filled out the “sign-out”

sheet in the annex. This is good information and I can see people are getting use out of the Sunfish. To have more room on the lower parking lot for the upcoming regatta we have moved all but two of the Sunfish and one Laser into the racks. Based on the sign-out sheet it looks like it’s rare to use more than 2 Sunfish at a time (outside of the classes), so this should make it easier for everyone.

We are still planning a small boat work Day on October 30th (9AM start); there are boat repairs needed, sanding and painting to be done and we need to build some new dollies as well. We’ll bring the materials, but skilled volunteers will be much appreciated.

Good luck to everyone in the upcoming regatta Lynde Edwards/Sailing Education Director
