The city of Aveiro dates back to the 10th Century (at least). Its name derives from the Latin Aviarium, which literally means “the gathe-ring place of birds”. The Moors in-vaded and occupied Aveiro until the 11th century, after which it be-came a very popular city among Portuguese royalty. Aveiro is cal-led “The Portuguese Venice”, beca-use of its beautiful canals and tra-ditional boats (moliceiros) that re-sembles the Italian city of Venice.

Created in 1973, the University of Avei-ro (UA) quickly became one of the most innovative universities in Portu-gal. Flying to Portugal

The closest airport is Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport in

Porto, located at 70kms to the north of Aveiro. Portela International

Airport in Lisbon is located 250kms to the south of Aveiro.

From Porto Airport to Aveiro

First you have to go to Porto - Campanhã railway station. The best and cheapest way is to go by Metro. Take a Violet (E) Line, which has a terminal at the airport. The trip between the airport and the railway station takes about 32 minutes (Z4 zone) and costs 1,85 € (one way) + transportation card(andante) 0,50€ (you buy the card just one time). From Lisbon Airport to Aveiro

The best way to get to Aveiro is by train from Lisboa-Oriente railway station. To get to the train station, take metro in the airport to Orien-te (red line). You can also go by taxi, which takes about 10 minutes or by bus (lines 5 and 44). The train to Aveiro takes around 2-3 ho-urs. How to reach the University of Aveiro from Aveiro Railway Station

Aveiro railway station is located at about 20 minutes walking dis-tance or 5 minutes taxi ride from the University Campus. To reach the Campus, you can also use the bus which regulary departs from outside the railway station. http://www.moveaveiro.pt/

The city itself is small and plane, that makes it easy to move around. You will not need to use public transportation, because everything is close.

The Princess D. Joana gave her name to the museum. She was daughter of the King D. Afonso V, left all of wealth behind and entered this house in 1472, leading a saint life. In 1693 she was beatified. The Convent be-came famous mostly because of the presence of Prin-cess Saint Joana and her religious cult. The Museum of Aveiro presents a visit circuit with two different parts that complement each other: the monumental route and the permanent exhibition. On the ground floor you can see the tomb of Princess Saint Joana and the Church of Jesus which is decorated with sumptuous golden woodwork along with Portuguese “azulejos”. On the second floor you can find paints about how the Princess' became a nun. Tuesday to Sunday: 10:00 – 18:00 Closed on Mondays. Free entrance on Sundays and holidays till 14:00. For students always free.

“Fábrica” is a dynamical science center that belongs to the Portuguese net of the science centers. It aims to contribute to the develop-ment of the national scientific and technolo-gical culture. This museum in situated in Ílhavo; a small town very close to Aveiro (About 7 km from the university). The museum was and still is a wit-ness of the strong relation between the people of Ílhavo and the sea and the Aveiro lagoon. The “Faina Maior” – cod fishing with lines and hooks in single man dories in Newfoundland and Greenland – as well as the agro-maritime activities are the patrimonial references of the museum. Each of the themes is present in a permanent exhibition offering the visitor the possibility to find traces of a recent past. In the seas room, the third permanent exhibition of the museum, one can find a varied selection of boat models that express the diversity of the Portuguese maritime patrimony and the strong relation between the local people and the sea.

After being an active cod-fishing ship for over half a century, the Santo André was permanently anchored on the docks of “Forte da Bar-ra” (Gafanha da Nazaré, next to Barra) in 1997, due to the rising of restrictions for overseas fishing. The owner of the ship and the Gafan-ha autarchy decided to make this trawler a museum, so that everyone could see the cod-fishing methods and could understand the lives of those who served the ship. Currently, it was claimed by the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo as a side-museum.

The Aveiro lagoon "Ria de Aveiro", is named after the city of Aveiro, which is the main urban centre located near to the lagoon. Ria de Aveiro is beyond a mere geographical feature of Portugal. This 45-kilometer-long lagoon stands as one of Europe's last remai-ning untouched coastal marshland. It is also a haven for numerous bird species. Tou-rism and aquaculture are the main activities of the Aveiro Lagoon region. "Moliceiros" provide access along the Ria for tourist visits, in addition to traditional fishing or recre-ational purposes, including regattas. It is also renowned for its artisan fishing and as a center for the collection of ‘Flor de sal’ (an expensive salt variety).

Transformed into Eco-Museum, the Troncalhada Saltplant shows visitors the artisanal salt pro-duction methods, explores the landscape, flora and fauna characteristics as well as keeps alive the experiences and traditions linked to this se-cular activity. Characterized for being an open-air museum, open permanently, it permits the visitor to make the visit independently by querying the various interpretative panels. Intending a better unders-tanding you can request a tour accompanied by one of the technicians of the educational servi-ces of the Museum of the city [minimum 6 peop-le]. Despite the seasonal nature of the produc-tion of traditional salt characteristic, the guided tours of this museum can be requested every year, being provided in interior space, if weat-her conditions are not favorable.

Aveiro has the largest wetland in the northern part of Portugal, being one of the most important hot spots for bird watching. Different birds species can be observed here all over the year, such as: Common Scoter, Marsh Harrier, Purple Heron, Little Bittern, Little Egret, White Stork, Black-winged Stilt, Grey Plover, Eurasian Golden Plover, Northen Lapwing, Ken-tish Plover, Common Redshank, Greenshank, Dunlin, Black-tailed Godwit, Common Kingfisher, Yelow Wagtail, Grat Reed Warbler, Savi’s Warbler, Common Reed Bunting, Cirl Bunting and The Greater Flamingo. Aveiro traditional boat is called Moliceiros. If you want to listen the story of the Moliceiros and see some nice places in the city, take a boat tour starting from the city center close to the cent-ral canal . It takes around 50 minutes and it costs 8 €. Obser-ve the paintings on the boats, and ask your guide to translate what is written there. Some phrases have double meaning!

The highpoint of Aveiro nightlife is Praça do Peixe (a fish market square “Fish Square” ). In the morning fish is sold in the market, while during the night all the restaurants and bars around the square are open to receive the pe-ople! There you will find dozens of bars with music and cheap drinks.

The natural reserve São Jacinto is located at the southernmost tip of the line of sand dunes separating the northern branch of Ria de Aveiro from the Atlantic Ocean. It is composed of sandy beaches, marshland, freshwater and saltwater, and is home of many valuable species. You are guaranteed an unforgettable visit. This protected area consists of three different and characteris-

The shopping center Forum is situated in the center

of the city. It is one of the first open shopping malls

in Portugal. You can find there some of the most fa-

mous brands and restaurants .

It takes about 25 minutes to walk to the Glicínias Pla-

za shopping center from the city center. But it is ra-

ther close to the University. Insıde of this shopping

center, there is a big supermarket as well as number of

shops, restaurants and cinema.

There are several small supermarkets in city centre, as well as a number of traditional stores. There is also a traditional market in the center where you can buy fresh vegetables and fruit from the national producers. Don’t forget that during the day you can buy fresh fish in the Fish Market on the Praça do Peixe. The markets and traditional stores are closed Saturday afternoon and Sunday, while most of the supermarkets are opened also during the week-end.

If you want to surf in the Barra beach of Aveiro, contact the Surfing Associa-tion of Aveiro (ASA). It was one of the first surfing and bodyboarding scho-ols in Portugal. ASA is located at Praia da Barra, and offers excellent service of accompanying the water activities as well as renting the necessary equipment. With their well-trainned and prepared staff, you can get the best of surf!

Sport Activities In The City Center

There are two swimming pools in Aveiro center: “Sporting club of Aveiro (www.sportingcaveiro.pt)” and “Galitos (www.galitos.pt)”.

In the city park, you can run, do exercises

and play tennis. The old football camp

Nowadays, it has students from 70 different nationalities; almost 10% of the students are foreigners, which makes it the most international university in Portugal. The University of Coimbra holds a great historical meaning in the Portuguese spea-king world as well as in Europe’s higher education system. The University of Coimbra is an indisputable reference in higher education and research in Por-tugal, due to the quality of the courses and to the advances achieved in pure and applied research in various areas of knowledge.

Porto is located 75 km north of Aveiro and it is one of the last undiscovered Eu-ropean metropolises and an ancient port steeped in history and tradition. It is a highly atmospheric place that has become known for its monuments by re-nowned architects.

Porto is the city that originated and named Port Wine, and gave birth to one of world history's legendary figures, Prince Henry the Navigator.It is also the birthplace of that world-famous fictional character, Harry Potter -J. K. Rowling was living in Porto and she was working as an English teacher when she started writing her first book.

The best way to go to Porto from Aveiro is by train. The train to Porto takes about 50 minutes.
