What kind of festival is it?What kind of art forms does it celebrate?

✦ Meltdown is a musical festival held in Southbank. Each year people such as Terry Callier, Elbow, Fleet Foxes, Primal Scream and of course Massive Attack perform there. The festival is not only about music though and has a strong multimedia facet with film screenings, photographic exhibitions and other stuff. The events take place over the course of nine days, all overseen by the musical genius that

is Ornette Coleman.

When and where does it take place?

✦ Each year the Meltdown festival is held at Southbank. It usually happens around June/July time when it is hot so people can kick back and relax in the sun while listening to their favorite music.

Who is the target audience?

✦ The festival's eclectic mix of music, art, performance and film brings together a diverse range of fans, some just there for the music, and

some even trying to play there themselves resulting in unique collaborations and historic one-off events. Now in its 16th year Meltdown still attracts just as many people as it always has.

How is it funded?✦ Southbank Centre was built in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain and

the concert halls were originally funded and managed by the London County Council and their successors, the Greater London Council. Over 50 years later and its still standing.

What is its artistic policy and how does this map to

the content?✦ With Meltdown festivals, the policy is strictly about having one person each year

who is in charge of everything that goes on at the festival that year. With other festivals this doesn’t always apply. Sometimes the same sort of music is played a following year if particularly successful for instance they have had quite a few of the same Jazz players playing just through popular demand.
