Migration Strategy
Identify active reports during blueprint System cleanup Decommission reports that are obsolete
Understand the macros in workbooks before migration and check if the excel functions used in 3.x are supported in 7.0
Migrate the reports using phased approach By application area wise (Ex: Finance, Sales etc)
Migrate queries first and then workbooks Not everything needs to be migrated
Develop effective change management and training planBenefits of phased approach Simplified migration process Easy to manage Optimized business users time Transports will be smooth

Partnership After thorough review of vendors, BMS decided to partner with Intelligroup for migrating their front end objects from BW 3.5 to BI 7.0.
Intelligroup and BMS shared the project management responsibility jointly while the actual migration was Intelligroups responsibility. The project cost was reduced to the tune of 50% by deploying global delivery model to achieve the functional migration.

Migration Lessons Learned1
Text elements Post-migration, text elements which were present in the 3.x workbook no longer showed up in the 7.0 version SAP Note 1143771 was applied as a fix
Workbook does not get the correct query definition After migration, key figures with properties Hide (can be shown), Hide (Always) were displayed in the workbook result Re-assignment of Dataprovider to the result area in the
workbook fixed the issue Characteristic variables Characteristic Variables which are
defined as Mandatory do not show up as Mandatory (*) in the variable selection screen Re-assignment of Dataprovider to the result area in the
workbook fixed the issue

Migration Lessons Learned2
Error when creating Conditions using Key figures which are hidden. Unlike SAP BW 3.x, SAP Netweaver BI 7.0 requires the key
figures used in formulas or conditions or exceptions to be available in the query definition and not hidden.
Not having them in the query would result in unexpected behavior/warning
Migration of a BW 3.5 query resulted in an error The objects R3TR ELEM ABC und R3TR ELEM XYZ cannot be edited together because the 1st object's original is in this system, whereas the 2nd object's original resides in another system. (Message no. TK112) In order to fix this, we followed the 2 step process Open the Query using SAP BW 3.5 query designer and save Open the same query using SAP BI 7.0 query designer and save

Migration Lessons Learned3
Workbooks failed while migration with below message Program error in class SAPMSSY1 method: UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTIONand System error in program CL_RSR_XLS_VIEW and form ASSIGN_QUERY_TO_DP-03 . This is because workbooks were created in older versions of SAP BW and not compatible with the latest version of Excel Solution: Open the workbook in BW 3.5 BEx Analyzer and save Migrate to BI 7.0 with regular migration process
Default values in Variable selection screen Uncheck the Process Variable on Refresh in order to get rid of
the default values on the variable screen

Migration Lessons Learned4
1FORMULA error - When trying to Migrate some Queries having Conditions/Exceptions, we encounter a 1FORMULA error Program error and SAP Note 1159610 was applied as a fix
Delete Query results not available in BI7 analyzer - In BW3.5 we had an option to delete Query Results before we could save the workbook. This allowed us not to save a workbook with results. But in BI7, this option is not available. Reason could be that, when we open a workbook, the Variable
Selection screen appears first even before the excel sheet appears. This allows us to refresh the Workbook before the report is displayed.

Upgrade Lessons Learned1 Performance (RRI) Jump Issue Users complained of reports hanging during RRI Jump from
Summary to Detail Report Related to Default Workbook setting When you open the Query, first it will open default workbook from
RSRWBTEMPLATE, then open the Query in the workbook. You will require a workbook to open a Query which is saved in the RSRWBTEMPLATE table.
Resolution: Use SAP Default Workbook as Global Default Workbook

Upgrade Lessons Learned2 Performance Issue When running a BEx Workbook, users get Critical Error or Client
Out of Memory. Also, reports were very slow to open. Underlying reason for this is more memory is consumed by BI 7.0 when compared to BW3.5.
Resolution 1 Old Service Packs of .NET framework 2.0 had memory leaks which resulted
in more memory consumption. The BI 7.x Standalone frontend is recommended from SAP to have Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 in it's newest version, the newer version has fixes for the memory leaks.
Resolution 2 OSS notes 1094799, 1150242 and 1179647 applied
Subsequent Issue Applied 1150242 Insert the indicator ANA_USE_SIDGRID with the value
X in transaction RS_FRONTEND_INIT. This broke our RRI and is a known issue by SAP. Only known solution? FEP800.You activated the changes regarding the parameter ANA_USE_SIDGRID as described in Note 1150242. When you use the report-report interface to navigate from BEx Analyzer, the system does not transfer the cell context correctly. For more information, see Note 1276898.

Upgrade Lessons Learned3
Front End Issues experienced with FEP 601 Excel workbook name disappearing in Windows Taskbar Critical Error and Client Out of Memory errors BEx suddenly crashes without warning or error message Variant problems Variant migration program did not work exactly as promised Variant selection and search was much better in 3.5 Appears to be a hard limit to the number of variants that can be
displayed in BI 7.0

Key Learnings Limit the Scope Migrate only active reports if possible Resist temptation to do everything at once
Formulate effective Change Management Strategy Communicate! Plan Training and GUI Rollout Involve Business Users from Day One
Align software components across teams GUI, Front End patch, Excel and dependent components (.NET
framework) Highly recommend using FEP 801 or later
Get signoff on several sample reports before proceeding for entire population Optimize the Migration Process
