MELVIN TEBBUTT MSc – Water and Waste Engineering, Class of 1995 Water, Engineering and Development Centre School of Civil and Building Engineering LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Melvin Tebbutt has made an outstanding contribution to humanitarian relief and international development, both personally and as an inspiration and mentor to his colleagues and young engineers. He first joined the humanitarian sector during the Rwandan crisis in 1994, contributing to the construction and operation of refugee camps. This experience confirmed his desire to work in this area and inspired him to undertake his MSc with WEDC. He has since contributed extensively to field-based operations, providing technical and project management expertise to develop and successfully implement shelter, water and sanitation activities for a range of humanitarian organisations including Oxfam, DFID, REDR, UNICEF, GOAL and the British Red Cross. In 2003, he was a founding member of a partnership between Engineers without Borders and a national NGO in El Salvador, facilitating an annual cooperation community development and reconstruction project. He has also worked as a volunteer for RedR, serving on their Board (2007-10), facilitating training programmes, and acting as a mentor to younger members developing their careers. He was one of the first to arrive in Haiti, following the devastating 2010 earthquake, and has helped to accomplish the restoration of water supplies. His exceptional work has been recognised with the award of MBE for his contributions to the community of Montserrat (2001). Melvin Tebbutt has made an outstanding contribution to humanitarian relief and international development, both personally and as an inspiration and mentor to his colleagues and young engineers.
