Who were the Americas’ First Peoples? The new four-part PBS series Native America, which premieres Tuesday, October 23, aims to answer that 15,000-year-old question by combining ancient stories with modern science. Recent discoveries informed by Native American oral histories have led to a bold new perspective on North and South America — that through social networks spanning two continents, ancient people shared a foundational belief system with a diversity of cultural expression. Native America brings to life a land of massive cities connected by social networks spanning two continents, with unique and sophisticated systems of science, art and writing. Made with the active participation of Native American communities and filmed in some of the most spectacular locations in the hemisphere, Native America illuminates a story that for too long has remained untold. The series highlights intimate Native American traditions and follows field archaeologists using 21st-century tools such as multispectral imaging and DNA analysis to uncover incredible narratives of the past, venturing into Amazonian caves containing the Americas’ earliest art and interactive solar calendar, exploring a
massive tunnel beneath a pyramid at the center of one of the largest ancient cities and mapping the heavens in celestially aligned cities. Narrated by Robbie Robertson (Mohawk and member of the famed rock group The Band), each hour of Native America explores Great Nations and reveals cities, sacred stories and history long hidden in plain sight. Watch tribal members and descendant communities, whose ancestors built this world, as they share their stories, revealing long-held oral traditions with a thread that runs through the past to these living cultures today. Inventive animations and 3D computer modeling bring ancient ruins to life, enabling viewers to experience the pre-Columbian world in an immersive way. The result is a new window into a 15,000-year-old story that unifies North and South America and resonates to this day.
Native America airs Tuesdays, October 23, October 30 and November 13, at 9pm on KQED 9.

This year’s midterm elections could dramatically reshape the direction of American politics, and KQED is providing the area’s most trusted news and analysis of regional, state and federal races and measures. KQED will cover the governor’s race and the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives races. Competitive elections from the Central Valley to Orange County could decide the balance of power in the House, and we’ll spend time in those districts talking to candidates and voters about their hopes for how California is represented in Washington.
For the first time in eight years, Californians will elect a new governor, and voters will also decide on a U.S. Senate seat. Also on the ballot are voter initiatives on the gas tax, property taxes and rent control. Measures in Bay Area cities and counties also seek to tackle homelessness, rising rents and cannabis businesses. KQED will cover these races and measures with stories and interviews on the radio on The California Report, Forum and our daily newscasts; on television with KQED Newsroom; and online. Tune in to 88.5 FM each Thursday night for
Political Breakdown to listen to hosts Scott Shafer and Marisa Lagos analyze the latest election news and conduct in-depth interviews with candidates and political movers and shakers in the Golden State. You can also listen to Political Breakdown wherever you find your podcasts. When ballots are mailed out on October 8, KQED can help you parse through all the measures and races with our online Voter Guide. On November 6, we’ll have election night analysis and live results on our website.

The Bay Area’s LGBTQ community has far more to celebrate than can possibly fit into one month of pride in June. And for the visual artists profiled in KQED Arts’ new web series Redefining Pride: The East Bay’s Queer Artists, the work of creating greater visibility and acceptance doesn’t end at the start of July — it’s a yearlong (and sometimes lifelong) pursuit. In the series, KQED Arts contributor Emily Holmes highlights the work of queer-identified artists of the East Bay who are redefining our understanding of pride, featuring visual artists of color and a wide range of artistic approaches. For these artists, pride is about honoring the people and histories not necessarily included in mainstream presentations of the queer community. It’s about pride of place — how they’ve made homes for themselves and found their artistic support networks in the
East Bay. And it’s about creating, through their work, not only platforms for their own voices, but also spaces in which others can see their lives and their stories reflected. This last point can be seen clearly in the work of photographer Mia Nakano. She’s the artist behind the portrait and oral history series The Visibility Project, which documents queer Asian American women and trans-identified subjects to break barriers through both imagery and storytelling. Interdisciplinary artist Torreya Cummings looks back further in time. Combining images from California’s history with queer culture, she uses sculpture, performance and installation to bridge the “irreconcilable differences” between urban and rural, gay and straight, natural and artificial. Patricia Berne’s life and work further commit to breaking down boundaries. As the co-founder and director of the
performance project Sins Invalid, Berne develops productions that feature artists with disabilities and others who have been historically marginalized — artists of color and queer and gender-variant artists. And printmaker Nicólas Gonzales-Media, an active member of the UndocuQueer movement, demonstrates the power of straddling multiple identities. In work focused on immigration and social justice, he uses his art to advocate for other undocumented youth and their families. The artists of Redefining Pride are examples of the Bay Area’s extraordinary talent, who can serve as introductions, we hope, to a thriving scene of ambitious, radical and queer East Bay-rooted art.
Redefining Pride: The East Bay’s Queer Artists is a web series, available only at kqed.org/arts.

RememberingNick Donatiello Jr.KQED is deeply saddened by the passing of its former Board chair Nicholas (Nick) Donatiello Jr. on June 26, 2018. Donatiello was the founder and CEO of Odyssey L.P., a research company that studies consumers and technology, and he was a leader in our community. His insights and altruism will be greatly missed. Known for his generous and philanthropic spirit, Donatiello championed causes that were important to him throughout his life. KQED is lucky enough to be counted among those causes. Donatiello served on KQED’s Board of Directors from 2001 to 2008, taking on the role of Board chair for the last three years of his
term. During this time, he played an instrumental role in reshaping KQED and transforming the station into the most watched and most listened-to public broadcaster in the country. After leaving the Board, Donatiello continued to serve on KQED’s investment committee. This committee oversees the KQED endowment, which is designed to provide stability for the organization in a changing media landscape. During his tenure, the endowment more than doubled in size, and we could not be more grateful for the role Donatiello played in ensuring KQED’s sustainability for future generations.
“Nick Donatiello led the KQED Board of Directors during a pivotal time in our history,” said John Boland, KQED’s president and CEO. “The strategic initiatives and reforms he advocated continue to accrue to the benefit of KQED and the Bay Area community to this day. Nick laid the groundwork for the essential 21st-century public media service that KQED has become.” Gifts in memory may be made to the Nick Donatiello Endowment Fund, the income from which will be used to support KQED’s programs and operations. Find out more at kqed.org/donatiellofund.

The Circus, a new four-hour, two-part American Experience documentary, explores the colorful history of this popular, influential and distinctly American form of entertainment. From the first one-ring show at the end of the 18th century to 1956, when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey big top was pulled down for the last time, the series draws upon a vast and richly visual archive and features a host of performers, historians and aficionados.
The Circus: American Experience airs Monday, October 8, and Tuesday, October 9, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Join travel journalist Samantha Brown, wildlife cinematographer Bob Poole and BBC presenter Chris Packham as they visit the colorful gold and red landscapes of fall in New England. A mix of live feeds and pretaped footage from across New England, Autumnwatch New England captures time-lapse changes of fall foliage; a quest for a majestic moose in Maine; and key wildlife species like squirrels, chipmunks and turkey gangs as they invade backyards in preparation for the winter months.
Autumnwatch New England premieres Wednesday, October 17, at 8pm on KQED 9.

Stalking in the shadows, prowling almost every continent, cats are one of the world’s most diverse and successful predators. But there is far more to these charismatic and misunderstood animals than most people recognize. Filmed over 600 days in 14 countries and featuring 31 species of cat, the groundbreaking new three-part Nature miniseries Super Cats uncovers the secret lives of big cats and introduces behaviors captured on film for the first time, using the latest camera technology and scientific research.
Super Cats premieres Wednesday, October 24, at 8pm on KQED 9.
