As this is the final newsletter for the 2013-2014 season, I wish you all a fond farewell, although I have high hopes of seeing many of you throughout the summer.

Just because the season is over, doesn’t mean we stop entertaining! Monday, May 5th is our traditional Cinco de Mayo Happy Hour at The Gator Grille. This fiesta is always filled with upbeat entertainment and all your favorite Mexican food.

Our Mother’s Day Brunch is Sunday, May 11th. This event is consistently special in honoring and appreciating all the lovely women in your lives.

It isn’t summer until we kick off our signature barbeques with live entertainment and finger-licking cuisine. The Memorial Day Celebration is Monday, May 26th. Our 4th of July Celebration doesn’t fall far behind and before you know it, we are celebrating Labor Day come Monday, September 1st.

We will continue to communicate Club news during the summer via our mailings, e-bulletins, member websites, social media and FCTV. Please make sure your current e-mail address is on file with the Membership Office in order to receive the most current happenings at The Club.

The staff and I are already preparing for next season, so please let us know what you most enjoyed, what could be improved and what you’d like to see in the future – we welcome and appreciate your feedback!

For all of you going away for the summer, I wish you safe travels and we will see you when you return to paradise in the fall. Year-rounders, stay tuned for all the activities we have planned for you and I hope you continue to enjoy all that we have to offer at The Club.

Once again, thank you for an incredible season!

Sincerely,

Ron Albeit General Manager

“GREEN” Rent, Borrow and Freecycle

It’s the second pillar of the environmentalist’s mantra — reduce, reuse, recycle — for a reason: It makes good sense. By reusing items, we make the best use of the resources used to create those products, whether it’s energy, wood, metals or other raw materials.

Consider this for your summer projects: One study showed that the average power tool bought for use by a homeowner is used for just half an hour in its lifetime. And yet, most homes on any given street might have the same tool sitting in the basement.

Borrowing is free, so it’s a good first choice. Ask around, or post a note on a community bulletin board, before you shell out for that new table saw, the kitchen appliance you need for only one special occasion recipe or a wheelbarrow for that once-a-year garden project.

Freecycle is an example of borrowing on Internet steroids, since it connects people getting rid of useable stuff to people who want that same stuff. Need a new computer keyboard or mouse? Ask the network. Replacing your microwave oven? Offer it to the world. It’s as easy as connecting, arranging a time and place to meet and giving stuff away for nothing.

If you can’t identify a free version, look into renting. Hardware stores often have rental programs for power equipment so you can save money on home projects. Textbooks can be rented for the semester to save on the expense of buying new. You don’t even have to buy bicycles or, yes, cell phones, to use them daily.

Q: Why did you choose Naples/Fiddler’s Creek?A: When our children were younger, every year we stayed at The Four Seasons in Palm Beach for Spring Break. In 2004, friends of ours from Chicago who had a home on Marco Island suggested that we come for a visit. We stayed at the Marco Beach Ocean Resort and visited the Fiddler’s Creek Office on the main floor. We were hooked. We bought a home in June of that year and have never regretted our decision. Now we feel like we live at The Four Seasons all year long.

Q: In which Fiddler’s Creek village do you live?A: We live in Varenna.

Q: Which Club & Spa event(s) is your favorite and why? A: We truly enjoy all the parties and Happy Hours. The music, food and friendships that we have made at these events are memories we will cherish throughout the remainder of our entire lives.

Q: Are you a native Floridian? If not, where are you from? A: John and I were born and raised in Chicago.

Q: How much time do you spend at Fiddler’s Creek?A: We sold our home in Long Grove, Illinois, in 2009, which is when we became full-time residents of Naples.

Q: If seasonal, where else do you spend the year?A: We rent a corporate apartment in downtown Chicago in the summer.

Q: What are your other hobbies, volunteer activities, etc?A: We enjoy spending time in Chicago with our two grown daughters, Kristina and Angela. We are avid wine collectors and “drinkers” and enjoy a 4.5-mile brisk walk up and down Fiddler’s Creek Parkway. We donate our time to St. Matthews House and the American Cancer Society.

Q: Where do you like to go outside of Fiddler’s Creek? A: While John is not traveling back and forth from the airport, we enjoy relaxing on Marco Island Beach and experiencing the amazing sunsets at Sale e Pepe.

Q: Describe your favorite vacation destination and why?A: Since John is 100 percent Italian, we would definitely say Italy. In fact, this year we are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in Sorrento. The landscape, food, hospitality and wine keep us going back.

Q: Please share any other information regarding your family, friends, professional life, etc. that you wish. A: John is the author and founder of “Corporate Physics,” and is senior vice president at Alexander Proudfoot in Atlanta. Mary Anne sold her fashion business in 2007 and went back to school and received her Bachelor of Arts in business at DePaul University in 2012. Our oldest daughter, Kristina, is a home office coordinator for a vegan food corporation in downtown Chicago and our youngest daughter, Angela, works full-time as an office administrator for a recruiting firm and will be starting her graduate program in occupational therapy at University of Illinois in Chicago this fall.

There is no question that having the proper technique on your shots is extremely important. All players, however, do need to keep in mind that hyper focusing on the proper technique can cause you to freeze up, or in other words, cause “Paralysis by Analysis.” During a competitive match, if you find yourself focusing too much on what grip you are holding, the angle of the racket face or your backswing, your body will not be able to perform at its best. What you do need to focus on is how you want to play the point; not if your follow through is working correctly. Here are a few tips for you to think about to avoid freezing up when you play.

1. Think Shots, not Strokes. Focus on where you want to hit the ball as opposed to how to hit the ball.

2. Think Big Shot, Safe Target. Use the middle of the court to give you as much margin of error as possible.

3. Don’t work on or think about your technique during the match. This will only make things worse. Wait until the match is over.

Summer Safety Tips for Dogs Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable, and it poses special risks for your dog. Keep the following safety concerns in mind as the temperature rises, and follow our tips to keep your dog cool.

• If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child’s wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in.

• Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes.

• Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water.

• Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun’s heat is less intense.

• Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog’s paws.
