PRESIDENT’S
REPORTRAY BRUMBELOE
MGCA PRESIDENT
Greetings everyone. You have a
great award winning and strong chapter. Recently, the Mid-
Georgia Cattlemen's chapter and members took home
several distinguished awards at the 51st Annual GCA
Convention, Trade Show and Expo in Perry. The Mid-
Georgia Chapter again won the Largest Multi-County
Chapter, the State Commercial Cattleman of the year went
to Charles Floyd, the State Purebred Producer of the Year
went to Roger and Janet Greuel, and Honeywood won
Champion Pen of Five Angus. Congratulation to all for
these great achievements.
The most impressive honors came from the start of the
CattleWomen's Hall of Fame where three of the first six
initiates were from the Mid-Georgia Chapter. Yes, I said 3
of 6. Betty Copelan, Gail Hilley, and Betty Nash comprised
half of the first class into the CattleWomen's Hall of Fame
and may I say most deserved. This is quite a testament to
how great these women were as individuals. The Mid-
Georgia Cattlemen's Chapter is truly blessed to have had
women that have given so much of their time to support the
beef industry and to the betterment of the local chapter. The
Mid-Georgia Chapter would not be as strong as it is if it
were not for the women’s involvement. Thank you so much
to all our women members.
Good news on the legislative front, HB386 was passed.

tax exemptions on inputs for farmers and ranchers. The
intent of the Ag Exemption section of the law is to simplify
exemptions and basically included all ag inputs. Also,
HB916, the CUVA Reform bill passed. Otherwise known as
the Conservation Use Valuation Assessment, the bill makes
changes to make CUVA more accessible to all farmers and
ranchers by eliminating the arbitrary minimum acreage
requirements that were detrimental to small, beginning, and
expanding farmers and ranchers. The ability to get both bills
passed were a collaborated effort between GCA, Georgia
Farm Bureau, and the Georgia Agribusiness Council. For
those that want more information on these bills go to
legis.ga.gov for more information.
By now most everyone has heard of "Pink Slime".
Recently the media jumped on this coined term to use for
their articles sensationalism. The correct terminology is
"Lean Finely Textured Beef". Eldon Roth started the process
by using beef trimmings in the early 1900's. The process
involves removing the fat by mechanically removal in a
heated centrifuge and treated ammonia gas to kill E.coli
bacteria. The simple fact is that it is 100% beef and
processed from beef trimmed from steaks and roasts. For
more information visit beefisbeef.com.
For those that produce hay, the first cutting has come a
little earlier this year from the unusual warm weather that
we have experienced during the winter months and early
spring. Now we need to hope and pray that the rainfall
comes in a timely manner during the hot summer months.
Your officers and directors are working toward a local
Farm Tour this fall. All the details are being worked out right
now so be sure to check out the upcoming Bull Sheets or
attend the bi-monthly members meetings for more
information. If you have any suggestions that you would

The National Association of Conservation Districts
(NACD) is celebrating the 57th year of Stewardship week
April 29th – May 6th, 2012. The 2012 Stewardship Week
is themed “Soil to Spoon”. Soil is the starting foundation
of all of the food we eat.
Today’s farmers are dedicated to using responsible land-
management practices to ensure a sustainable food supply
and healthy soil for future generations. This is important to
make the connection back to the soil, where our food gets
its start. “The next time you sit down to a meal, take a

farmers who helped produce it.”

HAY PRODUCTIONWes Smith, Upson County Extension Coordinator
As we start putting up hay, there are several things you
need to think about. Before you start putting hay in the barn,
I suggest that you let it sit out for at least two weeks. The two
weeks allow for hay to be check to make sure it doesn’t go
though a heat. Most hay will go though heat two to three
weeks after baling if it was baled with too much moisture.
Hay temps of 120o to 140o are considered safe. If hay temp
gets above 160o, you have a good chance of a fire and you
need to get it out if you already have it in the barn.
If you need hay moisture checked, I have several hay
moisture meters you can borrow. Hay can be checked in the
windrow before baling or I have a meter that can be used
after baling. For round bales, moisture should be lower than
16 to 18 percent and squares under 18 percent. The reason
square bales can stand a higher moisture is that the volume
of hay per bale is not as large.
With the weather we have had, we should have some very
good hay put up. But the only way to know for sure is to pull
samples and send to the lab and get an RFQ (Relative Forage
Quality) on it. There are several hay contests that your
samples can be submitted to for judging. Call your county
agent about hay samples.
The trouble with learning from experience is that
you get the test before the lesson.
The squeaky wheel doesn’t always get the grease.
Sometimes it gets replaced.

Cattlewomen’s Report – Cynthia Douglas
The new officers for the GCWA for the next year will be:
Nanette Bryan, President, Cynthia Douglas, Vice-President
and Ruth Hice will serve as a Director. The drawing for the
Minerals and Reproduction Ted G. Dyer,
UGA Extension Animal Scientist – Beef Cattle
Each year, purebred and commercial cow/calf producers
strive to reach production goals. Brood cows are expected
to produce top quality calves either for market or breeding
purposes. If a cow or heifer fails to produce a calf or
produces one that does not perform well, her ability and
long-term use is evaluated. Management practices such as
controlled breeding, breeding soundness exams and body
condition scores are used to determine the reproductive
ability of the herd.
Nutrition plays an important role in the reproductive
process. Cattle in poor condition may fail to show signs of
estrus, fail to conceive and/or express reduced fertility.
Balanced rations are designed so that cattle will maintain
or gain weight according to their nutritional needs. Costly
mistakes in overall reproductive efficiency could be made
if these needs are not determined and met.
Forage testing is the most accurate way to begin
designing a sound nutritional program. If a forage analysis
is not available, then mineral content can be determined
from book values. If the balance between minerals, such as
calcium and phosphorus, is not within an acceptable range,
decreased production may occur. When evaluating a
ration, it is important to remember that forages are usually
going to have a relatively high concentration of calcium
and a low concentration of phosphorus. The opposite is
seen with a concentrate (grain and protein supplement)
diet, with calcium having a low and phosphorus a high
concentration. The ratio for calcium and phosphorus is
1.5:1, with an acceptable range of 1:1 to 2:1 being
satisfactory. A deficiency or imbalance in the ratio of these
minerals can cause decreased weight gain and/or
decreased efficiency of gain. Cows that have a superior
milking ability can require up to three times the normal
calcium as a dry cow. Heifers may express a delayed
puberty, and cows returning to heat postpartum can be
delayed if there is a phosphorus deficiency.
Sodium and chlorine are very important in cattle diets.
These minerals make up salt and must be supplied in order
to maximize production. Cattle that lack these minerals
can have decreased appetite and weight gains. Cattle will
usually consume .005 to .01% of their body weight in salt
daily.
It is important to balance out minerals in the ration.
These are just a few of the minerals that can have a direct
impact on reproductive efficiency. By simply
supplementing cattle with the proper mineral
requirements, overall performance can be enhanced.

Laundry DayOne day, a housework-challenged husband decided
to wash his sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into
the laundry room, he shouted to his wife, “What
setting do I use on the washing machine?”
“It depends,” she replied. “What does it say on your
shirt?”
He yelled back, “Georgia Tech”.
And they say blondes are dumb…

A cowboy was loading his horse into the trailer that was
parked next to the road. A couple from the city were
driving by and stopped. After asking some questions about
ranching, the woman asked, "Why do you wear that large
hat?"
The cowboy responded, "This hat keeps my head warm
in the winter and keeps the sun off of my face in the
summer."
Then she asked, "What are those leather things you have
on over your jeans?"
"Chaps," answered the cowboy, "They protect my legs
from the brush that covers a lot of this area."
The man was looking at the cowboy's feet and said,
"Why, you're wearing Nike's. I thought real cowboys wore
boots."
Gathering all of his dignity, the cowboy said, "Look,
Mister, I'm a cowboy... Not a cattle buyer."Copied http://www.cattlerange.com/tcr-jokes_b.html

CattleWomen’s ReportBy Cynthia Douglas, MGCW President
“Time flies when you’re having fun.” This saying must be
true for our ladies since we seem to be having fun as we work
together to accomplish so many activities and the year is
almost half over. Susan Allen, Janet Starnes and I distributed
beef material at the Pike County Health Fair. We presented
the Elsie Sell Buckle to Gayla Sizemore.
We had a great turn out at the convention from our chapter.
Ruth Hice did a great job on the quilt that brought in over
$700 for our GCWA Intern Scholarship. Ruth will serve
another year as a GCWA Director and I will serve as GCWA
Vice President. Janet Greuel and her husband were honored
as the GCA Purebred Producers of the Year. The Georgia
CattleWomen inducted Betty Copelan, Betty Nash and Gail
Hilley into the first GCWA Hall of Fame. I served as a judge
for the Beef Ambassador Contest on Saturday.
So what is coming up? May 2nd and 3rd will be Farm
Days in Upson and Spalding Counties. We have several
members helping with these events. June is Beef Month and
we will be promoting Beef for Father’s Day at Akins Farm
and Home in Barnesville on June 16th from 11:00am-
1:00pm. We can use your help serving and distributing beef
materials. We will be collecting donations for the Wounded
Warriors. Don’t forget to serve Beef for Father’s Day. If you
would like to distribute materials in your area let me know.
Ideas for June Beef Month – Give friends recipes; have a beef
recipe swap at your next church, garden club, or social event;
give your local butcher recipes to distribute; work with a local
restaurant in a drawing for a steak dinner give away. These
are just some ways you can get involved in your area.
If you haven’t paid your local dues of $5.00, please do so
at the next meeting. We encourage you to join the Georgia
CattleWomen. There is a form above our recipe in the back of
this issue. We hope to see you at the membership meeting in
Barnesville.
Rodney Hilley presented Melissa Lance withthe 2012 Gail Hilley Scholarship.
