Tenindewa woman named2012 Rural AmbassadorPhilippa Rumble, 24, a community-spirited farmer’s wife, business owner, mother of two and leader in her own right, has been named the 2012 Rural Ambassador.

This young woman, who is currently studying children’s services at Durack Institute of Technology in Geraldton, is intent on eventually fulfilling an ambition as a social worker. With two boys aged one year and two years old, Philippa owns a childcare centre in Mullewa.

As Rural Ambassador Philippa has achieved one of her many life goals of which the majority are community focussed within the rural sector.

“It is my dream as Rural Ambassador to generate a movement for change in communities by creating networks that support young people, mothers and families in regional and remote areas,” says Philippa.

“Encompassed in this network would be leadership opportunities, fellowship and friendship. This would help to unite communities and individuals and to empower them. By doing this it will help to regenerate lasting and strong communities.”

In between her busy life Philippa is also a committee member for the Mullewa Muster and Rodeo, a committee member for the Mullewa Agricultural Show and team member for Mullewa Relay for Life.

The Rural Ambassador competition is sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the Perth Ambassador Hotel and the Department of Agriculture and Food and coordinated by The Royal Agricultural Society of WA to recognise the contribution of young leaders who work to promote regional development.

Rebecca Jenkinson, 21, of York, was named as runner-up. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Agribusiness Marketing.

Philippa and Rebecca were two of five finalists vying for this year’s prestigious Rural Ambassador, which also included Rhys Yuill, 23, of Dardenup, Dominique Hodge, 25, of Mokup and Phillippa Davey, 25, of Corrigin.

“The high calibre of finalists meant judges faced a difficult decision,” said The RAS President Hugh Harding. “The competition focuses the attention on individual contributions to local communities and provides opportunities for young, rural leaders.”

Get on theroad to fun The 2012 IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road family trail features masses of exciting new activities this year.

With the theme being education, followers will be able to gain a great insight into food, farming, conservation and how to live a healthy lifestyle.

And for the first time, The Royal Agricultural Society of WA has teamed up with the West Australian Football Commission to bring a new interactive AFL footy zone to the sports stop, adjacent to the main arena. This area will have a range of activities to test kids’ footy skills including inflatable games and every child will receive a footy

gift from either the West Coast Eagles or the Fremantle Dockers.

For those who love to bounce around we have the perfect thing! The Springfree™ Trampoline. Awarded a WA Consumer Protection Award Springfree is different - there are no nasty springs, the frame is well below the jumping area and the net is flexible to catch the misguided jumpers! The Trampoline, shipped to the West by an Eastern States company, will be at the Show for the first time this year.

Justin Shanks from Springfree™ Trampoline says, “Springfree™ Trampoline is proud to sponsor the IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road and we can’t wait to showcase our design and entertain the families of Perth. For a company new to the Perth market, the IGA Perth Royal Show is the perfect fit. An event rich in history and culture, it’s a valued calendar event to the industry and community.”

Springfree™ Trampoline will be giving the opportunity for two lucky families to walk away from

the Show as winners, taking the fun from the Show home into their own backyard! Two Compact Round Trampolines worth $985 will be up for grabs in an exclusive competition for IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road passport holders.

In the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Centenary Pavilion, the aroma of freshly cooked popcorn will be hard to resist! All IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road participants will receive a free bag of fresh popcorn as well as access to the family rest zone with comfortable seating and a range of ‘big books’ to enjoy. The Department of Agriculture and Food will be giving away a fun, jumping bee game from this location, as well as a smart placemat from the Buy West Eat Best site in the IGA Fresh from WA Pavilion. The popular IGA Orchard will continue outside the IGA Fresh from WA Pavilion, where children can collect fruit and vegetables, as well as a Girl Guide cookie and a muesli bar.

Another new addition for 2012 is the gardening activity at ‘My

Habitat by Trevor Cochrane’. In a new twist on a traditional favourite, the freebee here will be a purple carrot, courtesy of Sumich.

The IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road trail returns to the Jim Horwood Pavilion this year after a break, with the opportunity to meet painted sheep, have a cuddle with the bottle fed lambs, and learn more about where our food comes from. The trail is moving with the times with the addition of computer game stations in this Pavilion, thanks to a Wifi hotspot.

Returning for 2012 is the Bauxite Alumina Joint Ventures wonderland of discovery at the Landcare exhibit celebrating Australian Year of the Farmer. Youngsters can jump on a mini digger, enjoy the bauxite mining experience and also learn about protecting animals and plants in our forests.

For those of you young enough for the big challenge and competition make sure you are in it to win it! All you have to do is operate the mini digger to scoop up the mineral and gravel onto a container. Each day

there will be a family movie pass or Perth Zoo pass given away to the heaviest scoop of bauxite!

Before entering the mining pit, it’s up to our mini miners to wash down their boots and learn how to prevent any potential dieback spread - keep it clean, keep it green.

Mining isn’t the only thing on the agenda - there will be a special visitor, the critically endangered Woylie, of which there are only 2,000 left in the wild. Woylies are great for the eco system. They break up heaps of soil in their foraging, allowing water to penetrate easier. These little creatures also recycle nutrients by burying leaves and spreading fungal spores. So come and find out more information about these nocturnal creatures and decorate a FREE Woylie sun visor as part of the IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road trail.

To help you navigate your way between all of these exciting activities and locations, you will be able to download a Google virtual photo tour to aid navigation of the IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road trail around the Showground.

With so much to see and do this year, there is an extra incentive to complete and return your IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road passport – an opportunity to win a kid’s cooking set worth $250, plus daily prizes of family movie passes (worth $75) to see Hotel Transylvania. It’s all thanks to The Good Guys, Anchor Foods and Sony Pictures Releasing.

Taking the farminto schoolsPupils from 16 primary schools had plenty of food for thought as The Royal Agricultural Society planted its School Incursion Program throughout the metro area, extending into rural regions, during terms two and three.

The Program, in its second year, has educated more than 10,000 students at 36 schools with a message about where our food comes from. On the menu for the students is a feast of fresh facts about fruit, grains, dairy, fish, olive oil, vegetables and meat produced on our doorstep – in WA.

On May 28 the Program rolled out to White Gum Valley Primary School, St Jude’s Catholic School, Langford and Australind Primary School.

Headed by Farmer Damian Foley, the youngsters had the opportunity to cuddle and pat animals including Mr Showtime, a Jersey/Friesian cross calf; Ted, a two-year-old cross breed sheep; Angus, the farm dog; Noodles, a tame pet Angora goat and three hens named Henny, Penny and Gerty.

The RAS President Hugh Harding says national research has shown that children today are often in the dark about the origin of food their families buy at supermarkets.

“One of the enduring benefits of the IGA Perth Royal Show is that children learn where their food comes from, appreciate the work of farmers and realise that everybody benefits from our agricultural sector and other vital WA industries,” says Mr Harding.

“We think this program is an important and highly relevant extension of many of the key areas of the Show,” he said.

In collaboration with a children’s theatre company, The RAS developed a play incorporating the popular Inspector Pickles character. The ‘Thank a Farmer’ play depicts modern farming in WA and gives children an appreciation of the role of technology in agriculture. The RAS also provides schools with the opportunity to participate in interactive class sessions with Farmer Damian.

Mr Harding says that feedback from teachers has been positive with many declaring they were unaware of the sophisticated equipment common place at many farming operations today.

“The use of satellite navigation, GPS tracking and remotely operated machinery combined with leading agricultural practices ensure WA farmers among the most advanced and efficient producers of quality food in the world.”

Council

newsThe RAS Council are excited to introduce Ian Gregory as our latest addition to Council and wish him a wonderful first Show in this exciting new role.

After more than five decades of association with The RAS, firstly as an exhibitor, then from 1966 as a Councillor including a term as President from 1987 to 1990, Past President Jim Webster has announced his retirement from Council. The RAS thanks Jim for his outstanding contribution and dedication. We wish Jim a very happy retirement.

We would like to send our condolences to the family of the late Councillor Angus Horwood. Angus was a man of many talents and a member of many associations; he will be sorely missed throughout the Perth Community.

FAREWELL TO WILLIAM DE BURGH

We were saddened to hear of the death of long time RAS Member Mr William de Burgh, just one month shy of his 100th Birthday.

In 2010 William was photographed with the then youngest member of The RAS, Ava Lewis and mum Shelley Turner. As the oldest member of The RAS, he hoped in the future Ava would have as many happy times at the Show as he had enjoyed over the years.

William also shared some of his favourite memories;

“Am I really the oldest member of the RAS?” he asked from his Bentley retirement home. “I’m shocked. I’m only 98 you know.

“Don’t ask me how long I’ve been a member; my memory is a bit frayed at the edges. But I have always loved going to the Show.”

Born in Bassendean, not far from where the Royal Show had its own beginnings in Guildford, Mr de Burgh left Guildford Grammar School in 1929, aged 17. The following year he volunteered as a steward at the Show’s cattle competition and from that moment on he never looked back.

“I volunteered as a cattle steward for years and years until I got a bit past it and went for lighter duties at the District Displays.

“They were great, even more interesting than the beef cattle.

“I only took one week’s holiday a year from our property in Moore River, and I always spent that week at the Show. I went there for pleasure and as a volunteer.

“I’d come down from the bush and stay with relatives in South Perth and go to the Show every day.

“We didn’t have any stud cattle to exhibit but we used to enter the fat steer competition. I’ve got an idea we might have won but it’s a long time ago now.”

According to Mr de Burgh, not much had changed at the Show over the years.

“The crowds, the Grandstand, the exhibits, they’ve always been there. I love it all. The Grand Parade was always fantastic, very well run.”

Does yoghurtgrow on trees? DAFWA dispels misconceptions about food origins A recent national survey of year 6 and year 10 students, by the Australian Council for Educational Research, found that many young people are confused about the origins of their food.

Some surprising results included: three-quarters of Australian children in their final year of primary school believe cotton socks come from animals and 27 per cent of children are convinced yoghurt grows on trees.

The Department of Agriculture and Food’s display in the Centenary Pavilion is set to dispel some of these common myths by giving children a gate to plate experience; teaching them the process of how food ends up on supermarkets shelves.

The experience includes displays of fresh fruit and vegetables growing in plots in the display. Children will be asked to participate by answering questions about how their food is produced, before getting a token which will allow them to sample the end product.

Continuing the education journey, younger children can settle in the kid’s corner full of agricultural themed puzzles, colouring-in activities and balloons.

The Department’s display is also a stop for IGA Follow the Yellow Brick Road, where participants can collect something exciting to take home and try out in their own kitchen.

Visitors to the display will have the opportunity to learn more about other aspects of the food supply chain including the importance of biosecurity, changing climates and where WA food products are exported to around the world.

Information about how the Department of Agriculture and Food are ensuring that you continue to have fresh and healthy food on your plate, as well as the valuable work they are doing to continue growing the agriculture and food sector, will also be on display.

So if you would like to learn where our food comes from in a fun and interactive way and taste some of the delicious WA produce, make sure you make the Department of Agriculture and Food’s display in the Centenary Pavilion one of your stops at this year’s IGA Perth Royal Show.

There will be delicious food tastings on offer as well as cooking demonstrations, courtesy of Buy West Eat Best members, who will also have their products for sale in the IGA Fresh from WA Pavilion. Some tasty treats on offer include milk and dairy products, fresh fruits and salads, eggs and a selection of preservatives.

Children 12 and under to enjoy free entry to theIGA Perth Royal ShowThe Royal Agricultural Society of WA welcomed the announcement by the State Government for funding of free entry to children aged 12 and under to the IGA Perth Royal Show and Affiliated Agricultural Shows throughout the State as part of Year of the Farmer celebrations.

President of The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia Hugh Harding said that it was a fantastic gift to the WA community and a way in which we could all celebrate and acknowledge the Year of the Farmer.

“The IGA Perth Royal Show celebrates and enriches the connections between the city and the country. It provides an opportunity for us to better understand and value the significance of agriculture and the role of farmers in our daily lives.”

Entry to the Show includes hours of entertainment culminating in the IGA Fireworks Spectacular as well as 15 activity areas showcasing animals or other attractions.

New features incorporated into this year’s fireworks have never have been seen before in WA.

When we asked Jo what her favourite time of the year was we expected her to breathe a sigh of relief and say “the day after the Show”, but in fact it is the week of the Show for this is when she loses her ‘Designer in Residence’ status and actually is able to walk around the Showground and admire her handy work...
