Our government health services is organized in a particular way

IPH

Why doesn’t the government put an ANM in every village?

IPH

Problems in placing an ANM in every village

Do we have enough ANMs in our country for this?

Currently there are only 1,87,675 ANMs in our

country

We have 6,40,867 villages in our country

If we have to have one ANM per village we would need more than six lakh ANMs.

• Thus currently there are not enough

trained ANMs available in our

country.

• And government may not have

enough money to pay all their

salaries IPH

With an average population of 1000 people in every village, there would only be a

maximum of 20 deliveries in a year. So the ANM would be conducting just one or

two deliveries a month. This is not enough to maintain her skills.

20 deliveriesPer year

I have very little work

Problems in placing an ANM in every village

Even if we had enough ANMs, there would be under utilization of her skills

Why isn’t there a PHC in every village?

Problems in placing a PHC in every village

There is only few of us,we can`t be there in

every village

Do we have enough doctors in our country for this?

Currently there are only 26,329 trained doctors in our

country

We have 6,40,867 villages in our country

If we have to have one doctor per village we would need more than six lakh doctors.

• Thus currently there are not enough

trained doctors available in our

country.

• And government may not have

enough money to pay all their

salaries

IPH

With an average population of 1000 people in every village, the doctor will be

treating only 2-3 patients a day in the OPD. This would be major under utilization

of his/her skills

Very few patients this week

IPH

Why can`t a CHC be set up in every village?

IPH

Problems in placing CHC in every village

Problem-1

This would mean 24 lakh specialists(4 specialists per CHC) for six lakh villages in India. Currently there are only 6935 trained specialists in the country.

Problem-2

If there is a gynaecologist in every village, she will be needed to conduct a caesarean section once in 3 years. This is a major under utilization of her skills.

Problem-3The government may not have enough money to pay all their salaries

Laboratory facilities,

blood bank

Not usedThere would be huge under utilization of the

available equipment, consumables and facilities

of CHC

We don`t actually need all these resources at village

level

Problem-4

IPH

Let`s look at the main reasons for the government to have health services organized in a particular way..

IPH

Far Near

Reason-1: Balance between health service not being too close or too far

IPH

Reason-2: Preventing wastage or under utilization of available resources

Thus effective and efficient utilization of

Man power

Infrastructure

Drugs

Equipments IPH
