1 Members Share Their Family and Friend Experiences By Nicole Simmons, Membership & Leadership Development Manager As Soroptimist members, you are important! Not only do you execute our mission and help numerous disadvantaged women and girls throughout the world, but you are also the best spokeswomen when it comes to recruiting new members. Studies have shown people will get involved with an organization because someone they know personally asked them. According to the “2016 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report” from Marketing General, Inc., word of mouth is one of the most effective marketing methods for acquiring new members. Additionally, an online survey of global respondents in 60 countries conducted by Nielsen found word-of-mouth recommendations from family and friends to be the most influential marketing tool—with 83 percent of respondents saying it’s the most trustworthy marketing. Curious about how members across our federation are getting their friends and family involved in Soroptimist? We were too! We asked several members about the benefits of volunteering together. Here’s what they had to say: Eastern Canada and Camino Real Regions Margaret Gilbey, SI/Toronto, ON—ECR Susan Gilbey, SI/Westminster, CA—CRR Sisters: The best way to encourage membership is to share what we personally gain from our membership. We both think that the women and girls we help are so inspirational, and their stories are moving. Our programs are life changing—for those we help and ourselves. People shouldn’t hesitate to encourage membership, as what we gain from being part of Soroptimist is much more than what we give. In fact it is the best gift you can give yourself! MidwesternRegionGenevaTaylor,SI/IndianapolisMetroLaurenTaylor,SI/IndianapolisMetro(Geneva’sdaughter)JuliaTellis,SI/Iliana(Geneva’smother)Family—Geneva:Inmycase,itinvolvesmymom,myselfandmydaughter.WeareSoroptimists—threegenerationsnow!MymomisamemberofSI/IlianaintheMidwesternRegion.Whenherfriend,BevBucurofSI/Illiana,IL,heardthatthepriorIndianapolisclubdisbanded,sherecalledthatmymomsaidIlivedinIndianapolis.Withafriend’shelp,wehadtheclubbackupandre-charteredinaboutfivemonths.Mydaughterwasinhighschoolatthetimeandwasalwayswillingtovolunteerforus.Asshewitnessedotherladiesinourclubandtheirstoriesof"growingup"Soroptimist,shewashappytojoin.Weplanonherusinghertechnicalskillstohelpuskeepupourwebsitenowthatoneofourmemberswhohandledthathasrelocatedforherwork.

SierraPacificRegionTanaElizondo,SI/Hanford,CAAmoryElizondo(Tana’sdaughter)LindaCarter(Tana’ssister)Family—Tana:Wehavebeenateam.Whenworkingtogether,wecansupportoneanotherandoursatisfactionismultipliedwhenwehaveaccomplishedataskwitheachother.Wecanlaughandoftencrywhensomethinghastouchedourheartsandinspiresustocontinueonbecausewesharethesamefeelings.Whenyouarefamily,youknowthereisabond.But,whenwehaveeachtakenonleadershiproles,thefeelingschangewhenyouareencouragedorwhenyouofferencouragementtowardtheotherperson.Thereisprideandmuchmorethattakesover.Ihaveclosefriendsthathavebecometheclubpresidentbutit’snotthesamewhenIhavemydaughterassumingthatrole.Relationshipsareallowedtodevelopatanotherlevel.
