ConTEnTS
The desire to build business connections is a primary reason many new
members join The Fort Worth Club, especially members under the age
of 40, who are classified as Junior members.
I have come to realize the Club is full of very successful individuals and community leaders who
care about the next generation and want to help them achieve their goals. There is no better place
in Tarrant County to meet business professionals who truly care about your personal and
professional growth.
This will sound simple, but showing up to a Club event is the first and most important step to
maximizing the benefits at the Club. It is very difficult to not meet someone new or learn more about
an individual you didn’t know before. Taking this first step is often the hardest.
In my experience, the most proactive way to build relationships is to become involved in a Club event
or program. Involvement can mean serving on committees, helping plan a Club event, or simply
attending Steak Night. I have served as a Junior Activities Committee member, co-chair of the Junior
Mentor Dinner Series, a Membership Committee member, a 20/20 Vision Planning Committee
member, and am currently the Club’s Junior Advisor. The more involved you are, the easier it is to
grow relationships within the membership. Read more on how members at all levels have built
connections at the Club on page 10.
But joining the Club with the intent to only build business relationships can limit your potential
opportunities and overall Club experience. Approaching membership with the mentality of building
personal relationships can benefit more in the long run.
Business connections are important, but more meaningful
opportunities for community involvement and even new,
cherished friendships can come your way if your approach
is focused on building an all-encompassing relationship,
regardless of how long you have been a member.
Sincerely,
Cory Curry

For the first time in the history of the Club’s participation in the NACAD (North American Association of Club Athletic Directors) annual basketball tournament, the team won gold in the Masters’ Division in April in Seattle, knocking off the Multnomah Athletic Club for first place in overtime. The team was comprised of Jeff Kalbfleisch, Mark Benson, Mark Perkins, Bob Straight, and Jim Lacamp, coached by Elton Hyder. The Club will host the tournament in 2013. Executive Sous Chef Matt Seasock took first place in the Ben E. Keith One Pot Stage cooking competition, where he competed against 14 area chefs in a one-hour cook-off. Each chef’s four-portion course was prepared entirely in a single pot. Seasock also went home with the Best of Show award for most points earned overall.
Seasock prepared stuffed flounder along with spring vegetable ragout, savory bread dumplings, petite herb salad and champagne butter sauce. He said besides
winning the competition, his favorite part was the intensive practice and preparation. Executive Chef Timothy Prefontaine said, “I congratulate Matt for representing The Fort Worth Club so well.”

THE ForT WorTH CLuB MEMBErSHIp CoMMITTEE meets the last Thursday of each month to
approve applicants for membership.
M embers of all age
brackets and backgrounds will
tell you the best way to build
connections at the Club, both
business and personal, is to get
involved. Members have built
important relationships through
the Club by attending events,
serving on committees, working
out in the Athletic Center, or
simply dining on the 11th floor.
We asked a few members, both
new and tenured, to share their
reasons for joining the Club and
advice on making the most
of membership.
Crystal VastineOwner/publisher, Fort Worth Foodie LLCMember since: February 2012
Why she joined: Most of my decisions are made based on food so
the amazing menu from Chef Prefontaine and pastries from Chef
Kelly Patkus had an impact on my decision! But my husband and
I also joined because of the opportunities to connect with other local
business owners in Fort Worth.
How she’s built connections: I’ve really enjoyed attending the
Women’s Lunch Connection. The content is engaging and it’s a
great way to meet other women with similar interests.
Advice to new members: Take advantage of the multitude
of events offered by the Club. It’s amazing how coming to a
happy hour event or luncheon can result in making
unexpected connections.
Crystal & Matt Vastine
Scott WadeInvestment reporting and client relationship manager, NextCorp Capital ManagementMember since: 2010
Lynn Montgomery President, PlainsCapital BankMember since: 1998
Why he joined: To participate in the Club Speaker Series.
How he’s built connections: I have been involved with Socrates
in the City and have made some great connections through this
speaker series, hosted by author Eric Metaxas. Through relationships
that have developed at the Club, two friends and I recently started an
organization called the Fort Worth Civic Society. The primary mis-
sion of the organization is to “encourage rich thinking and excellent
doing in our city.” Our monthly meeting place is at the Club - the
perfect place for these types of discussions because when you enter the
Club, you are walking into a place with 125 years of history.
Advice to new members: Find something at the Club that grabs
your attention and get involved with it. Don’t just seek business con-
nections—seek ways to contribute to the community as well.
Why she joined: I use to office in the Club building. It is a great club to belong to and offers a lot of networking opportunities. It’s a great place to take clients to lunch and the recently renovated 11th floor makes it easier to connect with other members and clients.
How she’s built connections: By being involved in Clubs within the Club such as Junior Mentor Dinner Series and Executive Women. I have learned a lot from the Junior members and realize that we have a lot of great members at the Club. I also served on the Membership Committee.
Advice to new members: Get involved! Join Clubs within the
Club to get to know other members.

Arnold GachmanCEO, Gamtex IndustriesMember since: On and off for 25 years
Why he joined:
For Athletic Center use and to build business relationships.
How he’s built connections: Become involved in club activities and serve
on committees.
Advice to new members:
Plan to meet and extend yourself to new
faces at events and try to relate to their
personal and business lives.
Karanae BarreyAudit Manager, Whitley Penn LLP Member since: 2010
Why she joined:
To build friendships and business
partnerships and to meet influential men
and women in the Fort
Worth community.
How she’s built connections: I got involved with different committees
and Clubs within the Club such as Junior
Mentor Dinner Series, Women’s Lunch
Connection, and Armed & Glamorous
which allowed me to connect with many
men and women.
Advice to new members:
Get involved and don’t be shy. By being
a part of The Fort Worth Club, you will
make it even better for the future.
Why he joined: I was looking for a place to go where I could meet other successful professionals in Fort Worth, and the often spoke about camaraderie and friendliness of the members was a big draw. The latter exceeded my expectations.
How he’s built connections: I joined the Athletic Center and the
basketball league and I put myself up
to serve on as many committees as they
would allow me to. The Club affords
every possibility to meet people through
the various events they host: First
Thursday happy hours, golf rounds,
themed dinners and all of the different
offerings in the Library.
Advice to new members:
Get involved in the Club: attend events,
consider serving on a committee if one
is available and never hesitate to simply
introduce yourself to someone you
don’t know.

hen The Fort Worth Club relocated to its current location in 1926, after moving from what is now the Ashton Hotel, an indoor lap pool was built as part of the Club’s new Athletic Center. Member John Tilden Bailey, who passed away at the age of 95 on April 25, was only nine years old when he started his daily swim.
For more than 80 years, Mr. Bailey visited The Fort Worth Club for a morning swim prior to having breakfast in the Grille. Along the way, he deterred from his routine to earn a law degree from Cumberland University in Tennessee, join the Texas National Guard 36th Infantry Division, and serve in World War II.
In 1945, Mr. Bailey accepted a position with Mount Olivet Cemetery at his father’s request. He assumed management of Greenwood and Mount Olivet cemeteries in 1950 and remained in that capacity for more than 50 years, returning to his routine of swimming and having breakfast at the Club. It was a daily occurrence that even garnered coverage in a Fort Worth Star-Telegram article.
“He would eat the same breakfast everyday, which consisted of two eggs over easy, bacon, orange juice and cinnamon raisin toast,” said longtime a la carte server Ella Johnson. “There was one time he switched to sausage but then quickly switched back to bacon. On Wednesdays he would get his haircut after breakfast.”
Athletic Center employee Freddy Martinez says Mr. Bailey was happy to swim in any temperature of water and would not complain.
“One time the water was 54 degrees and Mr. Bailey insisted on swimming. Another time the water was 105 degrees and he still swam,” Martinez said. “No one else would venture into the water at those temperatures except Mr. Bailey. As he got older, he would only use his arms to swim instead of his legs. I was always very impressed by that.”
Johnson and Martinez both say Mr. Bailey was always a nice and funny man.
“He used to say, in reference to his funeral home business, ‘I’m the last person to let you down,” Johnson said. “I really enjoyed his company every morning.”Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Why The Hodges Companies, Inc. became a tenant of The Fort Worth Club:
We wanted a location that would be convenient for our

How the Club fits into the professional and personal lives of Hodges employees:
It is very important to have the convenience of dining and

When Sawyer Powers and Drew Davison first walked into the Horizon ballroom, Drew said, “Do we really need to go anywhere else?”
Sawyer said the two chose the Club for its amazing reputation for service and quality, and its architectural elements, charm and elegance.
“We knew any décor we brought in would only complement the Club’s existing beauty,” she said.
Sawyer’s most memorable moment from her red, black and white-themed reception, designed by Stardust Celebrations and Fete des Fleurs, was when she and Drew were able to dance alone in their empty reception space before guests arrived.
“I closed my eyes and took everything in,” Sawyer said.

20 Fort Worth Club Magazine • Summer 2012 www.fortworthclub.com
This year in April, eight men and their coach flew to Seattle, WA in hopes of doing what had yet to be done: reach the North American Association of Club Athletic Directors (NACAD) championship game. This year’s tournament hosted 33 teams from peer private clubs across the nation, including clubs from Washington, Detroit, Los Angeles, and New york. Many of the participating clubs have up to 21,000 members who play in city leagues and have tryouts to make the travel squad to this tournament. Our boys had their work cut out for them.
Led by Coach Elton Hyder, Jeff Kalbfleisch, Mark Benson, Mark Perkins, Bob Straight and Jim LaCamp took the court for their first game against The Multnomah Club and started the tournament with a loss. After a short rest the team faced the Washington Athletic Club and gained their first victory. The next day they took down the Olympic Club and the Bellevue Club and, for the first time in The Fort Worth Club’s history, they earned a spot into the championship game; only to face the one opponent who had beaten them: The Multnomah Club.
Beat, battered and tired, the men took the court and just 10 minutes into the game they were down by 16 points. By halftime they still trailed by 11. Sticking together, just as they have over the years in the Athletic Center, they quickly closed the gap in the first few minutes of the second half to four points. As players rolled across the floor to try to gain final possession of the ball, a long second half ended in a 64-64 tie. With three minutes on the overtime clock, The Fort Worth Club men pulled off a two-point victory at the very last second.
“It meant a lot to me personally, but more that we could do it for the Club,” said Jeff Kalbfleisch. “To be a member of such a great club has been a tremendous blessing in my life. The friendships I
have made over the past nine years are for a lifetime. God used Mark Benson to bring me to the Club in 2003. Championships are wonderful, but faith and friends are much more meaningful.”
So after all the years, how did these five men pull off the big one? Well, you can look at charts and evaluate numbers as they sit there in an objective way, but really the rest is just theory, conjecture and discussion. What can I say but to end with, and I quote the great LaCamp and Straight, “It is what it is.” (Readers: This is an inside joke amongst the team.)
“After all the years of traveling, player schedules, family obstacles, and business priorities, this was an incredible experience for us,” said Elton Hyder. “More than anything, it was a real achievement for this group of men and their dedication, persistence, and will to win. We were the smallest club in the tournament and this was truly ‘ Davey slaying Goliath.’”
Next year The Fort Worth Club will partner with TCU to host the 28th Annual NACAD tournament. Sign up for our upcoming leagues now and be a part of this great event.

10 Simple WayS to Make Healthy Habits Stick
To burn extra calories:
1. Park your car far away from store entrances. you can also skip the elevator and take the stairs.2. Do crunches or leg lifts while watching television.3. Instead of sitting while talking on your phone, stand-up and walk. Also try squats and lunges.4. Get a pedometer. Track your steps. Try to increase your walking steps each day.
To eat healthier:
5. While eating out, abide by the 1/3 rule. Choose bread, alcohol, or dessert – but not all three.6. Stick to the perimeter of the store when grocery shopping. That’s where you’ll often find the healthiest options.7. Limit your liquid calories. Soda, smoothies, and fruit juice all contain extra calories that can be cut.
To boost your metabolism:
8. Eat more frequently throughout the day. Eating several smaller meals during the day rather than three large meals can boost metabolism and fight off hunger cravings.9. Incorporate strength training into your exercise routine. This will increase your resting metabolic rate.10. Eat breakfast. Because your metabolism slows overnight, eating a well balanced breakfast helps your body kick start at the beginning of each day.

Jon Stickland has diabetes and has taken insulin for more than 15 years. Last fall, Jon’s doctor told him if he didn’t lose 100 pounds and increase muscle tone, he
wouldn’t be alive in five years.“That was all I needed to hear,” Jon said. “It really got the message home and within a week, Ryan and I were setting up my program.”
Ryan Tompkins, the Club’s Athletic Center director, formed a program of light weight-lifting combined with cardio and a doctor-advised diet. Jon has lost more than 50 pounds since beginning his journey and is aiming to lose 50 more.
“I am feeling much more energetic and have great encouragement from friends, acquaintances and all the trainers,” Jon said. “And I am completely off all insulin because of the weight loss and daily workouts, after 15 years of shots.” Jon says a big part of his success was the positive reinforcement by Athletic Center staff and members, both known and unknown.
“Throughout his journey, Jon had many setbacks,” said Ryan. “But he picked right back up where he left off and gave it one hundred percent. He also conquered the mental side of weight loss by ignoring weeks where maybe he didn’t lose a pound. He had perseverance and just kept working. He is a great example to many.”
Jon now calls his workouts a “daily pleasure.” “It is a very positive environment to conduct hard work day after day,” he said.
