Welcome to the MBA 2010 Membership Directory! We hope that you will “Shop Local!” and keep this directory near your phone and use it whenever you need to make a purchase. For almost any service or item you need to buy, there is an eager MBA member just waiting to supply it to you. By patronizing our MBA members, you are thanking them for supporting both our organization and our town. And when you do use an MBA member, please tell them that their mem-

bership is why you are procuring their services. With our MBA membership having doubled since 2005 (from 108 to another new record of 234 in 2010!), we are very excited about the growth of our organization. We are always look-ing to make the MBA more valuable to our members and to the Moorestown community. Be-sides running our traditional town-wide events (Easter Egg Hunt, Moorestown Day, Autumn in Moorestown Festival, Halloween Parade, Candlelight Night, and now ArtWalk), we have in-creased our “Business After Business” Networking Events, moved half of our breakfast meet-ings to lunchtime, and raised the amount of our annual Scholarships, among others. There is a $25 Non-Member charge for lunch at afternoon meetings.

Since 2008, the MBA has given out two scholarships to graduating seniors. The students must: pursue a major in Business or a related field, live in Moorestown, and achieve in community or extracurricular activities. This annual event for children (ages of 2 and 8) is held on the lovely grounds behind the Greenleaf Retirement Community (next to the Community House). Moorestown’s ArtWalk was founded in Spring 2006 and became an MBA event in 2009. The event unites the organizations in Moorestown that have a common mission to bring cultural events, music, theater, and fine arts to Main Street. ArtWalk’s purpose is to help local and regional artists and makers gain expo-sure in the marketplace, promote the creative, the handmade, and the sustain-able, and promote businesses and restaurants in Moorestown’s downtown area.

The Moorestown Business Association was founded in 1974 by a group of busi-ness owners and merchants, with a goal of improving the business climate for its members. Now celebrating its 36th year in 2010, the MBA has had these following recent highlights:

The MBA has also done the following in its recent history: - Added ‘ArtWalk’ to its five other town-wide events in 2009. The MBA was asked to take over this event from the Moorestown Arts Association. - Donated $1,000 for Town’s "Random Acts Of Kindness” Wristbands in 2008. - Added the Halloween Parade to its four other town-wide events in 2006; Moorestown Day (which was started in 1976), Candlelight Night (1976), Autumn In Moorestown Festival (1993), and the Easter Egg Hunt (1999). The MBA was asked to take over this parade once the “Make It Moorestown” Committee ceased operations at the end of the year after Moorestown being named “the best place to live in America!” by Money Magazine in July 2005.) - Annually buys, puts up, and takes down Autumn In Moorestown cornstalks. - Asked the Township for some sort of Appearance Committee, which became the forerunner of the current Appearance Committee. - Arranged for two business district trash pickups per week, when only one was originally scheduled. - Convinced the County to pick up recyclables in the business district, when only residential pickups were originally scheduled. - Donated 100+ U.S. flags to the Township for light pole decorations in 2001.

Moorestown History

Walk along Main Street past the old Town Hall (40 E. Main Street) and imagine that there was once wigwams of the Lenni Lenape Indians pitched there. They were attracted to the area by two clear springs on West Main Street (between Locust and Union Streets) and on East Main Street. By 1682, white settlers were here and the road from Burlington to Salem, King’s Highway, was laid out. In 1686, Dr. John Rodman bought 500 acres in the west-ern part of Moorestown, which at that time was known as Rodmantown. The name Moorestown did not come into use until the middle part of the 18th cen-tury and came about as a way of honoring Thomas Moore, Moorestown’s first innkeeper, realtor and businessman. In 1700, the Friend’s Meeting was built at what is currently the corner of Main Street and Chester Avenue. When it burned down in 1720, the first log structure was replaced with a stone building. In 1745, John Cox erected a tavern that is presently home of the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. Town Meetings were held in the tavern prior to con-struction of the old Town Hall in 1812. Still standing on the corner of Main and Schooley Streets is Joshua Bispham’s home, commandeered by Hessian offi-cers as they retreated from Philadelphia in 1778. The old homestead on the corner of King’s Highway and Lenola Road was constructed in 1742 by John Cowperthwaite and is recorded in the Library of Congress as an excellent ex-ample of an 18th century home. The Coles Hotel followed in 1867 on the corner of Main and Chester. By now Chester Avenue was an actual street instead of the earlier path known as Meet-ing House Lane. Although Moorestown has always been a town of homes rather than industry, because of the abundance of oak and hemlock bard, the tanning industry was an important early industry. The oldest tannery was located between Main and Second Streets west of Union. The nursery and fruit business was also estab-lished early in what is now the Perkins Center for the Arts. This brief history has been excerpted from a report prepared by the Historical Society of Moorestown, which was formed in 1969. Its headquarters is in the Smith-Cadbury Mansion located at 12 High Street and is one of the oldest homes in Moorestown.
