Q & A Section of the Monthly Memo (repeat)

We have recently become aware that while some Adult Education Program practices have been in place for a long time and have been periodically reviewed with all staff, it does happen that even long time employees are not always clear on some of the processes and procedures within our program.

In order to bridge any information gaps, we would like to initiate a Question and Answer Section in our Monthly Memo. All staff are invited to submit any questions they may have to Linda Cockerham at 416 222-82822 x 2513 or fax 416 512-4992 or [email protected]. All questions will be addressed in the next memo.

Property Security Year End Reminders Please refer to enclosed inserts for more information.

Employee Related Information Farewell Matan Good bye and good luck! It is with mixed feelings that we are saying good bye to Ma-tan Zelver, who is leaving us for a position with Toronto Community Housing Corporation. In his multifaceted role as Adult Education Program Community Engagement Manager, Matan has been the face of our program in many communities of Toronto, outreaching to those communities through the distribution of our promotional materials and making direct contact through Local Immigration Partnerships and a variety of other forums. We all wish Matan successes in his future professional career and personal life. At this time, we will not be hiring a replacement but put in an outreach team coordinated by Frank Chu and supported by Anne Marie Kaskens and Eileen Paulsen.

Retirement—we wish all the best to Sandy Mak, Instructor at Mary Ward I have known Sandy for almost 13 years since she joined the staff at Mary Ward LINC & ESL Centre. Not only was she my

colleague, but over the years she has become a very close friend. She was an amazingly organized and wonderful teacher who loved her job. She did it with such dedication and enthusiasm. It was always a pleasure to see her smiling face and it’s one of the things I miss most now that she has retired. Sandy always says how God has blessed her in many ways. However, I am blessed to know such a kind, caring, considerate and beautiful person inside and out! May God continue to keep her energetic in body, mind, soul and spirit as she begins this new phase in her life. Cecelia Gamboa Sandy has infused her teaching with a lovely calm, warm energy that has been a gift to her students. At her retirement lunch it was estimated that throughout her professional career, she has probably taught thousands of learners. For many of those, Sandy was their first English teacher in Canada. What a great introduction! We will all miss Sandy. Although she is no longer a teacher we are delighted to know that she enters this phase of her life with a new distinction as grandmother. We wish Sandy all the joys that life has to offer in retirement. Catherine Beckingham

A Day in the life of St Rita School Adult ESL Program On Thursday, May 30, the adult learners from St Rita Catholic Elementary School Adult ESL program were invited to the school office to lead the school, through the intercom system, in singing the national anthem. The entire school enjoyed their excellent performance and the spirit of belonging and togetherness. In the morning in the nursery program, children were learning how to recognize their printed names and the first letters of their names. They are all competing very well with their parents in English learning. Many thanks to the staff of St Rita Adult Education Program: Barbara, Anne, Kathryn and Malika for their hard work and dedication. Worship Centre learners photo-op with the Premier On their recent trip to the Better Living Health Centre, learners in Munni Subhani’s class at the Worship Centre, had the opportunity not only to participate in a number of informative workshops but also to talk to and take a picture with the Premier of Ontario, Kathleen Wynne.

Tips for Classroom Instructors Feature Resource of the Month submitted by Julia Chemali, Materials Consultant

Title: Impact Listening 3 CLB 5+ Authors: Kenton Harsch & Kate Wolfe-Quintero Publisher: Pearson Longman ISBN: 962-00-5135-1 The Impact Listening series is an innovative series of teaching materials to help ESL learners develop listening and speaking ability. It has three levels: Impact Listening 1 is for learners CLB 1 & 2, Impact Listening 2 is for learners CLB 3 & 4, and Impact Listening 3 is for learners CLB 5 +. Impact Listening 3 helps ESL learners develop their listening strategies which are ways of thinking actively as they listen. The main strategies that students practise in this course are Predicting, which makes students active listeners in trying to guess what will happen, or what the speakers will say, through illustrations, photographs, or vocabulary. Asking Questions or think about specific questions that will help them understand, Guessing or making inferences, Responding to ideas makes students more interactive listeners, Focusing on the main ideas helps students to concentrate, and Reviewing helps students to develop their memory. Impact Listening 3 has twenty units with different interest-ing topics such as The News, Jobs, Personality, Descriptions, Business, Travel, etc. Each unit starts with a Vocabulary Task section which introduces new words and phrases, and previews the unit topic. This is a warm-up speaking task that gets all students involved at the outset of the lesson. The Listening Task is a set of two linked tasks based on four short extracts. The first listening task focuses on understand-ing the gist of the input, while the second listening focuses on detail and interpretation. This section has illustrations and photographs to help students predict the content. Real world Listening provides a lively variety of extracts and engaging tasks that teach students how to predict, infer, and respond to the ideas in the extract. The Language Awareness section helps learners analyze key points of grammar, vocabulary, and phonology that affect listening. Interaction Link is a lively speaking activity, role play or game directly related to the unit topic and functions. The book comes with a self-study CD that is used with the self-study pages 73 – 93. It provides new tasks for the real world listening extract for students to review at home. It also contains the Language Awareness section, for at home review. Instructors can also benefit from the Teacher’s manual and the website www.impactseries.com/listening for additional ideas and resources.
