Throughout the last several decades, the average American’s life expectancy has increased significantly. Statistics show that in 2011 there were 5.7 million people 85 or older; by 2040 that number is expected to be 14.1 million.

Advances in medicine and technology, as well as growing awareness of healthy lifestyle practices, mean that Americans not only live longer, but they also live better.

However, as the population ages, needs change and senior living communities are becoming a vital partner in addressing those needs. The decision to relocate to a senior living community is not easy. However, making that choice offers a number of important benefits, including physical, emotional, social and mental stimulation, as well as the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supervised environment. Currently, approximately one million Americans live in some type of senior living facility and an anticipated two million seniors will reside in such communities by 2030.

Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America, with costs soaring past a quarter of a trillion dollars.

▪ In 2017, the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimer’s will total an estimated $2 59 billion. ▪ Average per-person Medicare spending for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is more than three times higher than average per-person spending across all other seniors. Medicaid payments are 23 times higher. ▪ Unless something is done, in 2050, Alzheimer’s will cost $1.1 trillion (in 2017 dollars). ▪ Nearly one in every five Medicare dollars is spent on people with Alzheimer’s. In 2050, it will be more than one in every three dollars.

Alzheimer’s kills – and deaths have nearly doubled in the last 14 years. ▪ Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United

States and the 5th leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older. ▪ Deaths from Alzheimer’s increased 89 percent from 2000 to 2014, while deaths from other major diseases (including heart disease, stroke, breast and prostate cancer, and HIV/AIDS) decreased. ▪ Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is exceptionally demanding. ▪ In 2016, more than 15 million family members and friends provided 18.2 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer’s

Dementia and AgitationBy Micha Shalev MHA

Dementia is not an inevitable consequence of aging, but the risk of dementia increases sharply with advanc-ing age and prevalence is expected to increase dramat-ically over the coming decades. Dementia features an alteration of memory and at least one other cognitive disorder such as aphasia, apraxia or a disturbance in executive functioning. Various etiologies are related todementia, such as strokes, head trauma, Parkinson’s disease, and substance abuse. Yet Alzheimer’s disease is considered the most widespread form of allsenile dementias, representing more than half of all cases. The onset of dementia of the Alzheimer’s type is gradual and involves continuing cognitive decline.

In addition to cognitive symptoms, persons with dementia often present behavioral and psycholog-ical symptoms which may increase their suffering, be difficult to manage by caregivers, and precipitate institutionalization. Behavioral symptoms of demen-tia include wandering, screaming, and hitting, while psychological symptoms include hallucinations, delu-sions, and depression. Between 50 and 90% of demen-tia patients present with behavioral or psychological symptoms.

The term “agitation” is very often used in reference to behavioral symptoms associated with dementia. Agita-tion was originally defined as any inappropriate verbal, vocal or motor activity which, according to an outsideobserver, does not result directly from the needs or the confusion of the agitated person. Behavior which con-stitutes agitation can be broadly classified as aggressive vs non-aggressive and physical vs verbal. A factoranalysis of a measure of agitation used with nursing home residents produced three factors which make it possible to distinguish various forms of agitation: aggressive behavior (AB, e.g., hitting), non-aggressive physical behavior (NAPB, e.g., pacing), and verbally agitated behavior (VAB, e.g., complaining).

The specific determinants of agitation remain unclear. Predisposing factors may include gender, personal-ity, poor health, functional impairment of activities of daily living, as well as cognitive and neurological deterioration. Other factors may precipitate the oc-currence of agitation and include the characteristics of the physical and social environment (e.g., too much noise, not enough social interaction) as well as physical needs such as hunger, thirst, and discomfort. Some of these variables, such as sex, the severity of cognitive impairment and the level of dependence in performing activities of daily living, are well documented in the literature in terms of their relationship with different types of agitation. For example, males are more likely to be aggressive than females.

LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE WITH A PERSON WHO HAS DEMENTIAPeople with dementia often find it hard to remem-ber the meaning of words or to think of the words they want to say. During the late phases of the illness, people with dementia may communicate mainly by gestures and expressions. The following suggestions may help you communicate with a person who has dementia:

• If you are about to lose your temper, try “counting to ten,” remembering that the person has a disease and is not deliberately trying to make things difficult for you.

• Try and talk about feelings rather than arguing over facts.

• Identify yourself by name and call the person by name. Approach the person slowly from the front and give him or her time to get used to your pres-ence.

• Try to talk in a quiet place without too much back-ground.

• Speak slowly and distinctly. Use familiar words and short sentences.

• Keep things positive.

• Use gestures, visual cues, and verbal prompts to help.

REVIEWS FROM CARING.COM

My mother has been a resident at Dodge Park Rest Home for about 3 years. I have to say that all em-ployees, from housekeeping to the owners, care for all the residents as if they are family. The programs and activities keep the residents engaged. I am truly blessed to have found such a wonderful facility that deals with her dementia.

The owner worked with me on an expedite to admit my mother to a safe and appropriate enviornment. My mother has advanced Alzheimer’s, and is in absolute denial of the disease. My mother was most stubborn on leaving her home. And although she writes and calls 10 x per day she wants to go home, she became acclimated to Dodge Park after some professional coaching and coxing from the staff at Dodge Park. Now she looks at look at Dodge Park as her home away from home. I can’t put in words to convey how wonderful the staff is at Dodge Park. The Aides are amazing. The Nurses run Dodge Park better than most corporations. They engage with the residents from the time they awake to the time they go sleep. This is an active, engaged environment. Last, I came to learn from head nurses and directors of other memory care facilities, that the model of Dodge Park is unique, and they can’t match the around the clock medical staff and support offered by Dodge Park.

Bringing Life to Those We Serve - Dodge Park Motto The Dodge Park staff truly helps a person find joy in life. My ninety year old dad ran his home for two years, alone, after caring for my mom for many years. His emotions were paranoia, anger and sadness. He had outlived many of the people he knew and loved. His early impressions of Dodge Park living were, “They put my clean clothes away for me,” and “I can’t believe how much I eat: they serve me hot chocolate with whipped cream.” The staff talks with him, calls him by name, agrees with him, asks him what he wants, encourages him to be with them and the residents to socialize, and find ways to help him look forward to his day at Dodge Park. It has taken us, his family, time to believe that Dodge Park is really that good. It is very clean, the staff is hard work-ing-constantly on their feet helping, and they warmly welcome us to the many activities and always have a meal for us so we can do what we always do with dad – sit and eat! Today, dad would like to learn the names of all of his Dodge Park family. He is no longer alone, he wants to be a part of the group, and I saw him smile yesterday, priceless. Dodge Park resident since April, 2019.

Memory care at Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park:

Where everyone knows your name II magine a place where individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia feel right at home. Imagine a place where they can regain a sense of fulfillment. Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park on Randolph Road in Worcester are just such a setting. The facilities’ N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program (from the Hebrew for “soul to soul”) strives to help those strug-gling with memory loss at any stage to build and maintain cognitive ability. Based on research from a variety of recent studies, Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis’s specially designed program is comprised of six pillars of activities in which memory care resi-dents and their families join in. These include Physical Exercise, Stress Reduction, Cognitive Exercise, Specialized Digital Programs, Purposeful Social Activities and Support Groups and Resident Council. Resident-centered care is at the cornerstone of the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program at Dodge Park and Oasis at Dodge Park. Caregivers, staff and the management team are specially

trained to focus on the strengths of each person and to understand a resi-dent’s preferences, accomplishments and family ties. Each resident’s pref-erences and life story contribute to the individualized care plan and activi-ties they take part in, from dining choices to daily activities and specialized care. Oasis’s Activity Coordinator Amy Bustin says: “One of my favorite activities at Oasis at Dodge Park is our Reminiscing Program. Here the residents and caregivers share their personal stories. We use this time to learn about each other and recall experiences from the past. A simple question of ‘where did you grow up?’ brought up old memories for one resident and we were soon talking about summers at ‘the World’s Fair’ in St. Louis. For residents, re-calling the past is important as their disease can rob them of these moments. Care-

givers in turn have been able to learn about the lives of the residents. Using these tools has seamlessly turned my resi-dents from the people I assist to those who feel like family. I feel blessed to know each of them. “In my experience, music has been one of the most pow-

erful tools we have in the memory-care program. One resident could not recall how many children they had but was able to sing all of the words to ‘God Bless America’ with me. I have used sing-a-longs many times to redirect those that are upset. The familiarity of the music is comforting while sharing the song experience creates a bond between residents and the aides. A quiet room can quickly be filled with ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ or ‘Grand Ol’ Flag.’ The variety of music pro-grams we have each week is engaging—from drum circle to upbeat aerobics to quiet background music early in the morning. Music has become one of the best ways to make connections on a daily basis.” www.oasisatdodgepark.com https://dodgepark.com 877-363-4775 508-853-8180

‘We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis’ Judy Atkins Bath’s mother Nancy Atkins has been a resident at Oasis at Dodge Park since just after the facility opened in 2017 and is thriving in the environment due in large part to the N’efesh to N’efesh Memory Care Program. “What works best for my mom,” Ms. Bath said, “is the music that’s offered, which brings back memories of entertainers she enjoyed when she was younger: Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Roger Whitaker. We have a little player in her room too. When the music starts, she is in the front row center and singing and very happy and engaged with it. When Bill McCarthy announced ‘this one’s for you, Nancy, and broke into Que Sera Sera (‘Que sera, sera/whatever will be, will be/the future’s not ours to see/Que sera, sera/what will be, will be’), she loved it. It is just wonderful for Oasis’s staff and (Activity Director) Amy Bustin to do this. Amy’s great, dancing and clapping with the residents. We feel so fortunate that we found the Oasis.” `Mom is doing fabulous at the Oasis’ Lisa Swalec’s mother Margaret Leroux—”Judy”—benefits immensely from the affection showered on her by an Oasis staff that is “compassionate and patient,” Ms. Swalec says. “She was at home with twenty four-hour care for two years. Oasis gives her more socialization than she was getting. My father was briefly at Dodge Park before he died. The amaz-ing thing is the music, Saturday nights and Sunday after-noons. The whole facility is memory care and residents are allowed to move about; they are not confined to one wing.”

Deal with the stress of caregiving— and help the caregivers you knowBeing a caregiver for an elderly parent or relative, oranyone who suffers health problems, can be exhaust-ing. The Healthline website offers these tips foravoiding burnout:• Go one day at a time. Don’t let yourself get over-whelmed by the big picture. Focus on what you haveto do today for yourself and your loved one withoutworrying about the future.

• Give yourself some “me time.” Schedule your dayso you have at least an hour or two doing somethingyou enjoy. Exercising, reading, talking a walk, orbingeing your favorite TV show can provide amuch-needed break.

• Manage your stress. Practice deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to control your stress levels.Exercise is a good strategy, too. Consider seeing atherapist or joining a support group. If a friend seems at risk of burning out from hisor her caregiving duties, these steps can help:

• Listen. Instead of offering advice, just listen whenthe person wants to talk. An empathetic ear can dowonders.

• Stay in touch. Many caregivers feel isolated. Make apoint of checking in as often as you can.

• Learn about conditions. Do some research intowhatever issues the caregiver’s loved one is facing—dementia, disability, disease, or whatever. This willhelp you understand the caregiver’s situation betterso you can offer the support he or she seeks.

MONEY MATTERS

New parents, avoid these money mistakesBecoming a parent for the first time is exciting—and itcan also be expensive. USA Today shares theseall-too-common mistakes to avoid when you’restarting out:• Buying every gadget. You’ll feel deluged by ads foreverything from baby-wipe warmers to blenders thatmake gourmet food for infants. Resist the temptationto buy it all. You can make do with the basics—a crib, a changing table, clothes, food, and diapers—without blowing your budget.

• Stocking up excessively. You don’t have to buy sixmonths’ worth of diapers in one swoop, no matterhow great the deal may seem. Remember that kidsgrow quickly, and chances are they’ll grow out ofinfant clothes in a short time—which means youdon’t need dozens of outfits no matter how cutethey are. Focus on just-in-time purchases during thefirst few years.

• Buying brand-new. Check resale shops for clothes, toys, and other baby necessities. Many parentsdonate their used supplies once their kids haveoutgrown them. Friends and relatives with kids mayalso be happy for the opportunity to unload some oftheir old gear on you.

• Not planning in advance. You should put yourfinances in order long before going to the hospital.Look into your insurance options for the newaddition to your family—both health care for yourchild and life insurance for you. Set up an emergencyfund. Think about your child care options(day care, or will one parent stop working?) so youcan be prepared for the expense or drop in income.

Try these basic tipsfor saving more moneySome people are good at saving money. Whether they have a natural gift or have trained themselves in frugality, they manage to sock away cash at a steady rate, ensuring a healthy retirement or agood-size nest egg. The Fatherly website sharessome of their advice:• Know why you’re saving. Set a goal—retirement, your kid’s college, charitable donations, orsomething else important to you. This will helpyou stay on track as the years go by.

• Have a plan. Once you’ve set your goals, put aplan in place for achieving them. Contributingto your 401(k) is a good first step. After that, make a habit of setting aside a fixed amount ofmoney every payday without fail so you’ll have itwhen you need it.

• Track your spending. Use a spreadsheet todetermine exactly where your money is going. You may be surprised to find out how muchyou’re spending on eating out or going to themovies. Tracking your expenses will suggestareas where you can cut down and save more.

SCIENCE LAB

Why are birds getting smaller? One might call it the mystery of the shrinking birds. The Reuters website reports that over the last 40 years, birds across many species have been getting smaller.Researchers have collected more than 70,000 birdskilled in building collisions in Chicago since 1978.They included more than 52 species, predominantlysongbirds like sparrows, warblers, and thrushes.Measurements show that the birds’ average body sizeshave declined in every species over almost 40 years.Average body mass dropped by 2.6%, and leg bonelength decreased by 2.4%. However, the birds’ wing-spans grew by 1.3%. (Scientists theorize that theincrease developed to enable the birds to make lengthymigrations with smaller bodies.)

The reason for the shrinkage? A phenomenoncalled Bergmann’s rule causes individuals within aspecies to be smaller in warmer regions and larger incolder regions, suggesting warmer temperatures due toclimate change may be behind the decrease.

Helium shortage on the horizonThe world is in danger of running out of helium.Helium is the second-most common element in the universe, after hydrogen, but on Earth it’s a non-re-newable resource, making it comparatively rare. As the NPR website points out, helium is created deep un-derground by the natural radioactive decay of urani-um, thorium, and other elements. It seeps up through Earth’s crust into pockets of natural gas, where it’s extracted.

It’s naturally lightweight (making it perfect for party balloons), but unlike hydrogen, it doesn’t combinewith other elements—which means that once it reaches the surface, it can easily escape Earth’s gravity.Liquid helium was used in the Saturn V rocket booster on humanity’s early voyages to outer space andthe moon. Today it’s used to cool superconductors and in the development of quantum computers. However, these days it’s in short supply, found only in the United States, Algeria, and Qatar. The price can beextremely volatile depending on production issues, making it very expensive and hampering researchrequiring it. Russia and South Africa are exploring their own options for helium production in hopes ofstabilizing the supply—and the price.

Whale found stuffedwith plastic wasteThe spread of plastic in the ocean is a growingconcern. One demonstration of that is thediscovery of 220 pounds of plastic found insidethe stomach of a dead sperm whale in Scotlandlast year. The UPI website reports that when scientists per-formed a necropsy on the 22-ton whale, they found “a whole range of plastic including sections of net, bun-dles of rope, plastic cups, bags, gloves, packing straps, and tubing … in a huge ball in the stomach, and some of it looked like it had been there for some time.”“It was desperately sad,” a local resident toldBBC News. “It does show the scale of theproblem we have with marine pollution.”

Quotes“A scientist in his laboratory is not a meretechnician; he is also a child confrontingnatural phenomena that impress him asthough they were fairy tales.”—Marie Curie

Hearts Card GameThe 18th century ancestor of Hearts was called Reverse, because in this card game, you want to lose certain tricks rather than win them.Players3 to 7, best with 4.DeckStandard 52-card deck.RankA (high) to 2 (low).GoalAt the end of the game, the player with the lowest score wins.Your goal in each hand is to:• Avoid winning any tricks including a heart or the Queen of Spades (aka the Black Maria), or• Win all 13 hearts and the Black Maria.

Setup• In a 4-player game of Hearts, each player gets 13 cards.• In a 3-player game, the 2 of diamonds is removed and each player gets 17 cards. In a 5-player game, the two of diamonds and two of clubs are removed; eachplayer gets 10 cards. In a 6-player game, the two and three of diamonds and the three and four of clubs are removed; each player gets 8 cards. In a 7-playergame, the two and three of diamonds and the three of clubs are removed; each player gets 7 cards.

Passing Cards• After looking at his or her hand, each player choos-es three cards and passes them face down to another player. All players must pass their own cards beforelooking at the cards received from an opponent.

• The passing rotation in a 4-player game is: (1st hand) to the player on your left, (2nd hand) to the player on your right, (3rd hand) to the player across the table,(4th hand) no passing. The rotation then repeats until the game ends. When other than four players are in-volved, the passing rotation is: (1) to the player onyour left, (2) to the player on your right, then repeat.

Tricks• The player holding the 2 of clubs after the pass plays that card to start the first trick. (If the 2 of clubs has

been removed for the 3-player game, then the 3 of clubs is led.)• Each player must follow suit if possible. If a player has no cards in the suit led, a card of any other suit may be discarded.Exception: If a player has no clubs when the first trick is led, a heart or the Black Maria cannot be played.• The highest card of the suit led wins a trick. The win-ner of the trick keeps all cards won in a single stack in front of himself or herself, face down. The winnerof a trick starts the next trick.• Hearts may not be led until a heart or the Black Ma-ria has been played (this is called “breaking” hearts). The Black Maria can be led at any time.• There is no trump suit in Hearts.

Scoring• Use a score sheet with a column for each player. At the end of each hand, count the number of hearts each player has taken, as well as the Black Maria. Hearts are 1 point each; the Black Maria is 13 points.• If one player has won all 13 hearts and the Black Ma-ria (this is known as shooting the moon), that player can choose to subtract 26 points from his or herscore, or to add 26 points to every other player’s score.• Hearts is generally played to 100 points (any score can be agreed on before the game begins, but 50 is a good minimum). When one player reaches or passes the agreed-upon score, the game ends. The player with the lowest score wins.

Catch My Heart GameMaterials: Red balls or Heart Shaped Bean Bags.Works best with 5-12 players, sitting or standing in a circle.Hand one player a red ball or heart shaped beanbag. Tell the player holding the ball to call outanother players name and gently toss the ball tothem. The player whose name was calledcatches the ball, then announces another playersname and throws it to them. Continue around till everyone has had a chance to catch and throw the ball. Once everyone is confident, throw a second ball into the mix. If daring, add a third or fourth ball.

Beta-Glucans…What are they and what benefits do they provide?

Beta-glucans are carbohydrates, or sugars, found in the cell walls of some plants such as oats and barley. Beta-glucans are one form of fiber called soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is recommended by Registered Dietitians to help improve cholesterol levels. Scientific studies have examined the potential health benefits beta-glucans may have, particularly in the area of cholesterol and heart disease and diabetes.

Beta-glucans are also found in certain bacteria and fungi, including certain mushroom varieties. Researchers have been studying the positive effects of mushrooms on the immune system. As part of this physiology, research is also showing that beta-glucans have anti carcinogenic (cancer-preventing) activity.

Beta-glucans in oats is showing promise to significantly reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Because beta-glucans are a soluble fiber, they help slow down digestion in the intestines. This can be particularly beneficial for those with diabetes, as the slower carbohydrates are digested and broken down into glucose (sugar), the slower these sugars are absorbed, keeping blood sugar levels more stable. As beta-glucans travel through the digestive system they take cholesterol with it, keeping it from building up in the body which otherwise could end up contributing to clogged arteries.

Food labeling guidelines allow certain health claims to be used on food packaging. The effects the soluble fiber, including beta-glucans, has on cholesterol is one such allowance. Cereal advertisements, such as Cheerios commercials are using such health claim allowances to promote their food product.

Oats are an easy and delicious way to include beta-glucans into your diet. As a breakfast cereal, quick snack or even dessert such as a topping to an apple crisp, it’s a very versatile food. Add dried fruits to oatmeal to add even more nutrition. Sprinkle oat cereal on yogurt for a more satisfying and filling snack.

The Plant-Based Diet Trend

One of the trends predicted for 2020 is an increase in plant-based meals. Food companies are producing more and more food alternatives to replace meat and dairy items. Ingredients such as soy, peas, and nuts are being used creatively to offer consumers more choices to keep this health-conscious trend going. Most grocery stores today have a section dedicated to plant-based foods and the variety has grown significantly recently. Not only for vegetarians and vegans, there is an increased trend with Americans to reduce their intake of animal foods. It’s getting easier to find these options that aremore nutritious. Nutritionally it is possible to thrive on a vegetarian or even a vegan dietary lifestyle. The challenge to get adequate amounts of protein and essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron and vitamin B-12 which are more readily available in animal products.

While getting enough protein is the first concern, getting complete proteins are the bigger issue. Complete proteins are those that contain all nine essential amino acidsrequired by the human body. Animal foods contain com-plete protein, while only a limited number of plant foods satisfy this need. Getting around this is done by eating avariety of plant-based ingredients to ensure getting the right mix of essential amino acids. Some plant foods are compete proteins such as quinoa and soybeans. Soy-beans are used to make several kinds of ingredients such as tofu, tempeh and edamame. Tofu is a particularly important ingredient for those desiring a plant-based diet because it is so versatile. It takes on the flavor of the other ingredients it is cooked with which makes it very popular. Additionally, tofu, tempeh and edamame are also good sources of calcium and iron, which are often lacking in meatless dishes.

Nuts, beans, lentils and chickpeas are great protein-packed plant foods. There are also a good variety of grains that provide protein. These include quinoa, farro, chia seeds, amaranth, bulgur wheat, gamut and teff. Vegetables can also sprinkle some valuable pro-tein into the diet. Choose dark, leafy greens such as kale, spinach and collards. Broccoli should also be eaten often as it not only offers protein but also several other nutri-ents such as fiber, calcium and vitamin C .

Fruits are a huge part of a plant-based diet. They are natural sources of vitamins and minerals, high in fiber and low in sodium and harmful fats. They are great as part of a meal (try grilled pineapple or banana slices in your oatmeal), great for dessert (berries and yogurt make a partial plant-based treat), and perfect for a snack (apple slices dipped in peanut butter are a perfect combination).

In 1797, a British publisher issued The YoungMan’s Valentine Writer, which contained scores of sug-gested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own. Printers had already begun produc-ing a limited number of cards with verses and sketch-es, called “mechanical valentines,” and a reduction in postal rates in the next century ushered in the less personal but easier practice of mailing Valentines. That, in turn, made it possible for the first time to exchange cards anonymously, which is taken as the reason for the sudden appearance of racy verse in an era otherwise prudishly Victorian.

Paper Valentines became so popular in England in the early 19th century that they were assembled in facto-ries. Fancy Valentines were made with real lace and ribbons, with paper lace introduced in the mid-19th century. The reinvention of Saint Valentine’s Day in the1840s has been traced by Leigh Eric Schmidt. As a writer in Graham’s American Monthly observed in 1849, “Saint Valentine’s Day... is becoming, nay it has become, a national holyday.” Laura Seddon Greeting Card Collection from the Manchester Metropolitan University gathers 450 Valentine’s Day cards dating from the early nineteenth century, printed by the ma-jor publishers of the day. The collection is catalogedin Laura Seddon’s bookVictorian Valentines (1996).

In the United States, the first mass-produced valentines of embossed paper lace were produced and soldshortly after 1847 by Esther Howland (1828–1904) ofWorcester, Massachusetts. Her father operated a largebook and stationery store, but Howland took her inspiration from an English Valentine she had received from a business associate of her father. Intrigued with the idea of making similar Valentines, Howland began

her business by importing paper lace and floral deco-rations from England. The English practice of sending Valentine’s cards was established enough to feature as a plot device in Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mr. Harrison’s Confessions (1851): “I burst in with my explanations: ‘”The valentine I know nothing about.” ‘”It is in your handwriting”, said he coldly. Since 2001, the Greeting Card Association has been giving an annual “Esther Howland Award for a Greeting Card Visionary.”

Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. In the UK, just under half of the population spend money on their Valentines and around 1.3 billion pounds are spent yearly on cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts, with an estimated 25 million cards being sent. The mid-19th century Valentine’s Day trade was a harbin-ger of further commercialized holidays in the UnitedStates to follow.

In the second half of the 20th century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manner of gifts. Such gifts typically include roses and chocolates packed in a red satin, heart-shaped box. In the 1980s, the diamond The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or wife, usually to children. When you include the valentine exchange cards made in school activities the figuregoes up to 1 billion, and teachers become the peoplereceiving the most valentines.

The rise of Internet popularity at the turn of themillennium is creating new traditions. Millions ofpeople use, every year, digital means of creating andsending Valentine’s Day greeting messages such as e-cards, love coupons or printable greeting cards. Anestimated 15 million e-valentines were sent in 2010.Valentine’s Day is considered by some to be a Hallmarkholiday due to its commercialization.

In the modern era, liturgically, the Anglican Churchhas a service for St. Valentine’s Day (the Feast ofSt. Valentine), which includes the optional rite ofthe renewal of marriage vows.

DODGE PARKREST HOME

The Bible presents growing old as a normal, natural part of life in this world. There is honor involved in the aging process, because growing old is normally accompanied by increased wisdom and experience. “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life” (Proverbs 16:31; see also Proverbs 20:29). God wants us to remember that life is short (James 4:14) and that the beauty of youth is soon gone (Proverbs 31:30; 1 Peter 1:24).

Jewish tradition emphasizes that taking care of a parent is a tremendous blessing and mitzvah. As the Talmud in Shabbat 127a says: “These are the fruits a person enjoys in this world, and continues to enjoy them in the World to Come. They are: honoring one’s parents…”

This is particularly true when the elderly have diminished physical and mental capacity, and are confronting their own mortality. But the task of taking care of them need not feel overwhelming.

Among the most disturbing aspects of growing old—especially in cultures that set a high value on rugged individualism— is the increasing frequency of senile dementia as human lifespan increases. It seems eminently unfair that people so afflicted should be robbed of their intellectual, emotional and social vitality while their physical bodies continue to survive. Alzheimer’s disease is a particularly difficult pill to swallow because the cause is unknown and it does not seem to be related to any particularly bad health habits. While progression of Alzheimer’s can be stalled, in part, by continued active involvement in mind-stimulating and physical activity, progression of the disease is nevertheless inexorable.

With Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia on the rise, finding quality care can be a challenge. Recognizing this challenge, The Dodge Park Rest Home and Oasis at Dodge Park developed a new program designed specifically to meet the needs of residents with memory loss. Based on years of experience caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents, Dodge Park and The Oasis at Dodge Park Programs partners with family members and care providers to develop a framework that supports the individual, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of memory impaired residents through Cognitive, Fitness and Wellness design.

While there is currently no cure for most progressive forms of dementia, it doesn’t mean we’re powerless against them. Mounting research is building an understanding that there may be ways to slow the progression and change the pathologies of many common dementias, giving those afflicted with them and their families the possibility of more precious, fulfilling moments together.

2. Keeping ActiveMeaningful activities promote a sense of well being, provide enjoyment, maintain functioning levels and support independence. The daily program offers small and large group activities to appeal to each resident’s personal interests.

3. Worthy StaffTaking care of those with memory loss takes a special caregiver. The N’efesh to N’efesh Program staff is specially trained to work with residents to make their lives better by including activities and care that promote self-esteem, laughter, fun and enjoyment of everyday life. Caring for a family member with memory loss can be extremely difficult. In a community that serves residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia, the task of caring for a loved one is shared by many dedicated and highly-trained individuals. With the knowledge that a loved one is well taken care of, caregivers can enjoy more fulfilling time together.
